Title: 100m or 400m???
Post by: Mikey on October 31, 2013, 06:39:57 am
I want to be a specialist 200m runner. At the same time I also want to run another event on the side. I guess 100 is probably better for speed but 400 would help with endurance. Kind of dreading running 400m but I want to focus on the event that will help improve my 200m the most.

It's probably 400 m.

It's probably 400 m.

Yeah I think I'll spend the next 2 months racing 200m and 400m. Than I'll start running the 100m again around Jan/Feb.

This is a pretty standard question that I've seen 200m runners deal with. It comes down to: what are your weaknesses in the 200m that you need to improve? If it's speed, then 100m might be better to focus on as a secondary distance. If you're gassed by 120m like me, then running the 4 might be best to build up your speed endurance. You could always do a mixture of both of course. I know lots of sprinters in my club do a mix of 1,2, and 4 training.

I don't have as much speed as I'd like but the problem is also the last 50m. Than again it could just be because I haven't had any race conditioning so if I didn't get injured I'm fairly confident that I would've improved on my last 200. I don't really have a choice with training because I train with an old school coach that predominantly focuses on 'pro' races, which are usually over 120m. Everybody in the squad does exactly the same training even the girls.

At your level you will be able to get a lot of gains quickly from being a 2/4 guy IMO.
