[ENGLISH] WAYDE VAN NIEKERK SUFFERS SERIOUS KNEE INJURY IN CELEBRITY TOUCH RUGBY GAME
The 400m world record holder, reigning Olympic and world champion, Wayde van Niekerk @waydedreamer has seriously injured his knee during a celebrity touch rugby match.
The 25-year-old South African will now face six months of rehabilitation in the US, Qatar and South Africa after sustaining medial and lateral tears of the meniscus and tearing his anterior cruciate ligament playing rugby in Cape Town.
In a statement Van Niekerk, who was due to undergo surgery at the Steadman Clinic in Colorado on Tuesday, said he hoped to be back in the summer of 2018.
"This is sport and these things happen. I trust that the team I have around me, including the medical professionals, will make this process as smooth as possible," Van Niekerk said.

ya. i don't think anyone is going to touch Noah in 200m in the future.. and if he can become 100/200, man o man, serious stuff. Apparently he's "better than Bolt" at this point (age-wise), but doesn't mean a whole lot given maturity etc, plus Bolt had to learn how to "start".
Noah just gives off next-level vibes to me.. something about him, beyond just his numbers, that makes me think he will be phenomenal for his whole career. Absolutely love his attitude as well.. Just seems to be having so much fun out there, always a huge smile on his face. And he's a moma's boy... lol.
something very refreshing about him.

10.08 100m for Browning.
"Two more Aussies ran PBs, in third place Jack Hale, for the second week in a row, took 0.01 off his 100m PB, clocking 10.19 and in fifth, local Alex Hartmann ran 10.27 (0.02 from his PB). Jake Doran, with 10.32 (his third fastest ever time) rounded out a terrific 100m for the Aussies".

Yeah hopefully we can get another sub 10 sprinter soon. Rohan Browning is 21 (10.08 PB), Trae Williams is 21 (10.10 PB) and Jack Hale is 19 (10.19 PB). Josh Clarke is 23 and has a 10.15 PB but the last couple of years he has been cut down by hamstring injuries.

That's a blow to the relay team, but I think it's a good decision for him. He took the classic post-PR backwards step and there's a few other sprinters in his tier now. It shows how limited a career in athletics is even when you're running 10.10. It's either: commit fully for 8-10 years to hit absolute peak in late twenties (while hopefully avoiding injury), or quit while ahead and still young enough to re-train in a different sport.

500k to play rugby 7's for 2 years versus limited money to fund yourself in athletics. It makes sense financially. It will be interesting to see how his speed translates to rugby. He should do well since 7's has tonnes of open space and endurance wise he'll have world class support to meet the criteria.

Karsten Warholm came desperately close to breaking Kevin Young's 28-year-old 400m hurdles world record at the Stockholm Diamond League on Sunday (23 August).
Had the Norwegian star not hit the last hurdle, he probably would have broken Young's time set in the Barcelona 1992 Olympic final.
As it was, he had to settle for the second quickest time in history, 46.87s, just nine-hundredths adrift of the oldest men's track record in athletics.

it's the oldest record? daaamn.
warholm looks like the one who is capable of doing it. this guy is crazy.
alot of records falling in this post-covid era. maybe less competition = better? dno.

Yeah it's the oldest male track record. There are some older field records, such as Yuriy Sedykh from the Soviet Union having a hammer throw world record set back in 1986, which is also the same year East German Jürgen Schult set the current world record for discuss. There are still quite a few female track records that are from the 1980's. For example, there is East Germany's Marita Kosch's 400m record of 47.60 set back in 1985. Czech Jarmila Kratochvílová still has the 800m world record that was 1:53.28 set back in 1983. She also held the 400m word record in 1983 but Kosch broke it in 1985.
As we know that period (1980's) was tainted by doping and it shows just how advantageous performance enhancing drugs are given that nutrition, sports science and technology have come a long way in the past 30+ years.
For the current records being broken it might be a combination of athletes feeling refreshed and 2020 was supposed to be an Olympic year so everybody is trying to peak for the right time.

In Aussie track news Rohan Browning ran a 9.96w 100m in a local meet in NSW. The wind was 3.3 but it was only his second 100m of the season so it will be interesting to see what he can do. Along with Jack Hale he's the fastest Australian sprinter atm.

The 100 yards doesn't get run much but Jack Hale broke a 55 year record and ran the 100 yards in 9.43 seconds. Apparently a 9.4 100 yard is about equivalent to a 10.2 100m.
