these somax videos/articles I watched/read today were actually pretty good..
http://www.somaxsports.com/video.php?analysis=sub-2-hour-marathon
http://www.somaxsports.com/eliterunner.php
http://www.somaxsports.com/microfiber.php
regardless of their products/services (microfiber reduction etc), there was some good info in these videos: vertical displacement, stride angle, ankle position, crossover, etc.. The comparisons between the elite african vs american runners was pretty good.
A runner with a 3 inch bounce lands with six times his body weight on each leg. For a 150 lb. runner, this is 900 lbs. Since a runner takes 1,000 strides per mile, this adds up to a total of 450,000 lbs. on each leg per mile. During a marathon, it totals 11,790,000 lbs. on each leg.

he talks about the importance of some form speed work AFTER sessions .. ie, the ability to shift from slower to faster..
i definitely find myself struggling with this.. if i go into a run thinking 'slow', it's so hard for me to shift gears and get back into a fast mindset.. i've been working on that more lately, especially today.. seems so important.

farah's on the sauce.
-
farah's on the sauce.
why do you say that?
i posted an article about some recent leaks from a hack which showed he was under suspicion by someone at IAAF but was cleared or something. he hasn't failed any tests. training with Salazar is suspect but, that's also the Nike Oregon project which has a ton of elite athletes. He adamantly denies it whenever he's asked/pressed.
not sure. hope not.
-
where there's smoke, there is generally fire.
obviously i have no proof beyond what's in the public record. just seems overwhelmingly likely that he's doped, given all the smoke around oregon project, most prominently from the propublica report a couple years ago.
-
where there's smoke, there is generally fire.

ya but, do these people just keep doping? i mean, you have everyone suspecting you, and you continue to dope? I don't really understand it. If I was doping with so many eyes on me, I imagine i'd be paranoid as fuck about getting caught.. sounds so stressful.
The thing I don't get about Mo, is he's winning double gold's and not dropping ELITE (Bekele-level) numbers. I mean his 5k in Rio was 13:03, psychotic for most but still seems so beatable. Centrowitz wins gold in like, one of the slowest 1500m finals in a long time. And Rupp gets bronze in the marathon, with an "ok" time.
Nice list of 5k times:
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_5000ok.htm
For outdoor, Mo's best is 64th.
10k:
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_10kok.htm
28th is Mo's best
Marathon
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/mmaraok.htm
So if he's doping, what's going on with everyone else? He's always seemed beatable to me but these guys know running way more than I do, so maybe he just knows how to deploy a winning strategy.
As far as those lists go, Bekele & Gebrselassie are absolute god's.. IMHO, Bekele has to be the greatest runner of all time, 5k/10k record and a previous Marathon record. insanity.
insanity. insanity.
anyway back to me.. i dno. I doubted Lance was doping though, so I have a horrible dopedar. I guess I give people the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise, and so that I can just imagine they are clean, because once they aren't clean, I lose pretty much all respect - very fast. It's fine to dope/roid/PED recreationally if you're just a psycho, but not if you're competing in drug tested/clean comps. That's just pure garbage.
-
comparisons to other runners are flawed because he's only doping or not doping himself. the counterfactual, if he is doping, is how good he'd be without it. maybe he'd only have the 200th best 5k. or maybe he'd only have the 70th best. who knows?
absence of evidence is weak evidence of absence. and there isn't an absence of evidence here.

interesting how weak Mo looks with weights. I mean, no matter how light I get, I don't think i'd ever be able to get "weak" again using weights, it's kind of like riding a bike if you've pushed yourself really hard, and figured out how to lift/handle free weights/handle that tension.
Thing is, I was crazy weak when I first started lifting.. I mean, 20 lb db bench press was hard, 85 lb barbell bench press wasn't happening, 95 lb half squat was brutal.. etc.. So I know what it's like to be very thin/light and not be able to handle weights. That's why it's a bit odd, that he's so weak. Unless, you look at it from the perspective of s&c coaches getting him to do some lifts, but rarely pushing him or not requiring him to really push himself, so lifting is done just to help maintain some lean mass AND it's used as a ritual to help give an athlete more confidence.
From that video, I don't expect that he's ever doing anything "advanced" in the weight room to further his running abilities. I guess that's what i'm getting at. I didn't expect he has btw. EDIT: and IMHO that's a good thing.. no super secret fancy stuff, just lots of mileage using better programming. Mo has often talked about lifting really helping him, attributing alot of his success to it. I just don't see that to really be the case, I mean I just doubt it. Probably has more to do with his diet, training programming, training partners, mindset, experience etc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91TZh72MnZI
good half squat form

man I really hate this video.. it's bothering me alot. dude ate 1 fucking motts applesauce after a 10 mile run, and yet he knows he has like 20+ more miles including a hard workout ahead of him.
what the fuck man.
fuck his coach & any1 around him who didn't smack the shit out of him. he's a damn beast but this video is a great example of training addiction.
that's why i force myself to take rest days... and drink milk (protein/fat) after runs etc.
his style just seems so disordered to me.. ie, maybe he could somehow survive on it when he was younger, but as he is aging, he is falling apart.
KENYAN'S DONT DO THAT SHIT. that's all i know. they eat good, sleep, nap, train 2-3x/day but alternate hard/light days.. And Bernard Lagat takes 1 day off per week, mandatory, with 5-6 weeks off per year after his season.
:pissed: :pissed: :pissed: :pissed:
The thing with Cam Levins is .. he'll probably figure this out a few years from now, when he's "too old", and still make a run at something or make another olympics.. just because he'll reduce the volume a bit and eat better etc.
I saw a quote from some olympic track chick today, forget who, but it said in her bio:
things I hate: junk miles
loved that..
Cam Levins is addicted to junk miles.
Furthermore, towards the end of the vid, interviewer asks him if he'd go harder at night on his ez run because of his bad track session, and he admitted yes.. Again, Kenyan runners wouldn't do that. So much discipline.. so you had a bad session, who gives a fuck.. plus they don't look at their watch on light runs etc.
hold me back. ffs.

toe...midfoot...heel
yea, beautiful.
and he's the slowest of the pack.........
other two have different form, which is what makes it an extra cool clip. white shirt is more traditional midfoot, yellow socks/nikes is more heel->toe.
the guy with more forefoot runs most graceful though, that's for sure.. looks amazing.

3x per day just doesn't seem sane/sustainable to me.. Apparently Cam Levins really broke down too, tons of injuries etc.. He just seems way too addicted to the mileage, this video is disturbing to me :/

man I really hate this video.. it's bothering me alot. dude ate 1 fucking motts applesauce after a 10 mile run, and yet he knows he has like 20+ more miles including a hard workout ahead of him.
what the fuck man.
fuck his coach & any1 around him who didn't smack the shit out of him. he's a damn beast but this video is a great example of training addiction.
that's why i force myself to take rest days... and drink milk (protein/fat) after runs etc.
his style just seems so disordered to me.. ie, maybe he could somehow survive on it when he was younger, but as he is aging, he is falling apart.

I watched the video. I liked how they showed the bad parts and all the preparation that goes into training. It was funny when his physio was trying to explain about what he does with trying to get the tightness out of the muscles- more of an art than a science but I understood. Also the toe bleeds. I'm not surprised he's got toe bleeds when he's running 190 miles some weeks. A marathon is 26.2 miles and Levin is running 190 miles a week- just insane. He's literally running a marathon every single day for some weeks.

yeah i meant that one is landing toe-first, one midfoot-first, one heel-first. all clearly elite.

ahhhhh.. nice, my bad. also, funny how the order of toe->midfoot->heel, describes the first runner's strike itself, hah.
exactly.
yup, such a great clip.

ya that was funny, typical s&c/physio magic. "I can't explain it to you, but I know it when I see it!". I'm personally wary of that kind of talk.
Also the toe bleeds. I'm not surprised he's got toe bleeds when he's running 190 miles some weeks.
I wonder if he had been laying off track work, and decided to get in a session for the camera, so putting on his spikes wrecked him.
Just don't see how you could run 190 a week, BE INCREDIBLY FAST, and have toe issues like that pop up coincidentally on the day you're getting filmed.
A marathon is 26.2 miles and Levin is running 190 miles a week- just insane. He's literally running a marathon every single day for some weeks.
it's impressive for sure, but he doesn't make it look appealing at all, in my opinion. He makes it look like a train wreck. I think for a guy like that, running a marathon worth of mileage per training day is absolutely no problem, but not if it's done 7 days a week. If he did that 5 days a week, to me that seems fine.. but 7 days? Just asking for trouble.
5 * 26 would have him at 130
5 * 30 would have him at 150
either of those seem fine to me, because it's the *5* that makes it work. He could do 10 miles in the morning, with warmup, speed work, cooldown, etc, then 16 miles light at night, hit his 26, then the next day go light and hit 13 in the morning, 13 at night, hit his 26, ... probably remain very healthy.
That "Nicolo" (el coyote loco) guy i posted a year back or so, got addicted to the mileage like Cam Levins and he got hurt. He fell off track completely. He was putting in 180-190 a week for a month, did a 5k race and wrecked his knee. He'd post videos of him just trying to get more junk miles in. That's when I realized these guys are nuts. They are trying to brute force their way to the top, instead of being more efficient.
TBH, it really bothers me. If they just toned it down a little bit, and had more rest days, these guys would probably be way better off. Why are they putting in more miles than Mo Farah, Kipchoge, etc? Do they really think that they are outworking everyone? Or are they really just digging themselves into a ditch? The story about some guy running 350+ miles a week is ridiculous.. You can go on strava and find people running 400+ miles per week - THEY RUN SLOW AS SHIT. It's impressive from one perspective, and ridiculous from another.
Everyone needs to learn from Bernard Lagat.. It's not his training that they should emulate, it's his dedication to "rest", "recovery", and long deload periods after the season. His longevity & consistency is so impressive. He mentions how runners he know, won't take a day off, that they think 1 day off will make them worse. This is a horrible mindset that permeates most of athletics.
Finally, the toe bleed stuff is emblematic of his mindset. Sure you're getting someone to film you, but fuck the rocky shit.. cut that session (and day) short & take care of yourself.
I guess I just see someone who "can't stop", "can't take a day off" .. and from my experience, and what i've seen online, that mindset always backfires eventually, because injuries creep in and force you to take months off.
http://www.all-athletics.com/node/173097
I wonder what he does for speed work?
dno, lots of fast repeats from 200-1k I imagine. He's got some really strong ankles from some of those clips on the track: no heel touch in those spikes in alot of the footage, during km repeats. That's pretty major. He's got some serious speed, that's for sure.
peace!

Levins was training with Mo Farah for a while. I'm not too sure why they still don't train together. Levins said he thought he was training hard but when he started training with Farah it was a reality check in terms of intensity.
https://spikes.iaaf.org/post/cam-levins-talks-about-training-with-mo-farah
Though his fellow athletes welcomed him warmly, when it came to training things were much less sympathetic. He remembers the first time he went on an “easy run” with Farah and Galen Rupp (who took 10,000m silver in London 2012).
“The last couple of miles were run in 5:15 or 5:20 and that was an easy run,” Levins recalls. “I would never have thought to have even approach that pace for my easy runs.”

great find!
bleh:
At SUU, his coach Erick Houle got him on a schedule that involved running up to three times a day and as many as 170 miles a week.
the next quote is:
Gruelling, but it paid off. In his final year at Southern Utah he secured the NCAA 5,000m and 10,000m double and made the Olympic team for Canada.
his college coach got him addicted to the "crazy high mileage". Not sure how many miles per week Cam ran previously, but I seriously doubt it was 120+.
i'd love to know if they tried 2x/day first, with less total mileage, and gauged whether or not that was working, then moved to 3x/day / 170-190.
Salazar seems like a much better coach, just from this paragraph:
Nutritionally, Levins also underwent a transformation. Out went the cookies, sweets and pizza; in came the granola and skimmed milk. He has also introduced daytime naps to prepare for the second session of the day.
The stuff about easy runs being low 5's is pretty crazy though. I've heard they are all over the place with that stuff.
Cam seemed to respond well to the lower overall volume, and higher quality work. I think he eventually got hurt working with Salazar/Oregon Project, and went back to his old college coach, and got hurt worse & slower.
From what I see, Cam is one of those guys who will do anything you tell him to do, and do it exactly the way you want. Incredible potential but, also extremely coachable.
I just really think his college coach set himself up for an unmaintainable mindset.. The way he trained, may work for a month, or a few months, but to engrain such a mindset for long term training, seems like a problem.
Achieving more with less should always be a primary focus .. why over work? It's like an algorithm, the best ones are efficient, achieve the result without doing any excess costly work. Finding that balance is important. The extremely high mileage coaches/athletes seem like they abandon that, and try to ride that for as long as possible but the mindset may never disappear ... "man i'm not working enough!! (at 130 miles a week, because it's not 170)" etc.
dno, 2cents.

my comment on the vid:
Great video, Great story .. but Carlos Handler is an absolute disgrace for advocating Boris risk tearing his achilles. I understand competing in the olympics is the ultimate dream for these athletes, but that could have ended very bad for Boris & ruined the rest of his career. This kind of reckless mindset from coaches should not be glorified, disgusting.

yup, very well said. agree 100%.
at that level, their legs look like propeller blades. to get them kind of ROM/cadence, they have to be moving incredibly fast. it's just beautiful to watch, and eventually try to emulate. hah.

is it just me or in the kenya clips, runners have much better lean than most other clips?
vs
vs
one girl literally leaning back.
it's just something I always notice between Coach Hudson's clips and Jake's clips.
i'm not one for forcing it, but I just feel like I see some incredible lean from kenyan runners in most every clip .. incredible lean for long distance runners. fwiw, when i look at my shadow when i'm running, i seem to have a decent bit of lean. I just need to get used to 200 SPM turnover for endless miles :D

^^
dude in white shirt & another in the black shirt (with green socks) stand out, also jake has some lean. that other white dude training with them seems more upright, he's more of a miler i think.

Damn, had a great workout this morning in #Boulder with @ianbutler_rcs. 20km continuous run (6x2km @ marathon effort/1km @ 20 seconds + slower than pace, extra 2km at the end) 1:04:22 total time 5:11 mile avg, splits (6:25, 3:24, 6:23, 3:23, 6:20, 3:20, 6:10, 3:23, 6:17, 3:27, 6:07, 3:28, 6:06) @ 5200 ft elevation. Best long workout this year, was really surprised since I just got back from Poland earlier this week. Then again, I am not so surprised, I have race 2 races in 3 weeks (15k and half), now my body has jumped in fitness. My workouts will now be better. Much needed confidence booster, things are coming around at a much needed time 🙏🏽. Imagine your muscles not moving when you want them to.
Imagine your body literally holding you back with every step forward.
Imagine falling down and picking yourself back up, time and time again.
Imagine watching Eliud Kipchoge’s #Breaking2 attempt and setting your sights on something even more daring.
Like Eliud, Justin Gallegos believes that humans are limited only by their minds, not by their bodies.
The 20-year-old, who has Cerebral Palsy, finished the 2018 Eugene Half-Marathon in 2:03:49.
Now Justin wants to break 2:00:00.
Imagine that.

tbh i'm surprised the iten fitness tourism industry isn't more built out than it seems to be, given how many rich fitness hobbyists there are. at a glance this place looks like a foreign guy profiting off of indigenous culture, which sets off alarm bells. happens all over the world in the tourism industry, including here in pakistan. not impugning this dude in particular, maybe he's doing things right. easy to do things wrong, though.

yea not sure.
there's tons of "random" training camps in Kenya. I hear the government sanctioned stuff is also very corrupt, folks in charge of athletics pocket a big chunk of the money. Wilson Kipsang recently called them out on it, i posted it in the articles thread.
Apparently you can't just be a foreigner and work in Kenya though, need permits & such. Don't think they make it easy for foreigners to come in and just setup shop, but I imagine it does happen alot.
i'm also surprised it isn't more built out.. I think it's slowly growing though, they've realized they have a "running mecca" over there. One of the training camps I follow is white-person-owned-and-operated, it seems. They have lots of Kenyan coaches/trainers etc, so they definitely hire the locals - but they have to. People want to run with Kenyans, not non-kenyans, hah.
I'd love to see it keep growing though.. would be great to see runners over there, find easier ways of making money instead of just hoping to win races all over the world. So many fast Kenyan athletes over there, who never leave Kenya, but could win/top3 most prize money races in the US/Europe etc. It sucks because it's just circumstance at that point.
Kenya should have an *enormous* running economy.

Now, while being in awe from that workout, it is a bit easier to realize the greatness of Kipchoge ( or any other elite marathoner, 10-15 minutes more don't change anything ) : he did 26x1mile in 4'38'' each. Without rest. Mind blown!!!

yup. it's so crazy. it's basically alien :D
kipchoge was once a 3:50 miler so, he has a serious engine.
i imagine the athletes in that video are ~4:15 or so for the mile, i'd be curious though.
just searched the fastest (looking) one on the video, Dhruvil Patel
https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/5468193/North_Central_IL/Dhruvil_Patel.html
4:19 for the mile official. I imagine he's a little faster than that now though.
13:58 for the 5k.

also: if I tried my absolute hardest, i might be able to hang with her for 1km, not even 3 laps. :ninja:
this boggles me about cheserek, too, but in the other direction. he's doing km repeats at 2:50ish and making it look easy. 8 km plus the two reps at 2 km: 12 km total with rest in between each rep and set. that's a gnarly workout that is beyond the ability of roughly 99.9999999% of the world's population. kipchoge did 42km, straight, at ~2:54; his final two splits were 2:48 and 2:44.
i mean come on.

i recall his first 1km was ~2:43 in that vid. 2:43 is like 4:20 min/mi pace lmfao. Haas was like, "i dont care if it's around 3:00 for the first couple of k's etc" .. then Ches opens it with 2:43.. insanity.
1km @ 2:43 is flying.
these guys are so fast, it constantly blows my mind.
whenever I see splits now, I actually understand how fast they are going. Prior to the end of last year (Dec 2017), 1km or 1 mile splits didn't really register. After this year of training, I appreciate it on another level. The faster you get, the more you appreciate elite performance, because it definitely sinks in how "slow" you are.. lmfao.

top 3 guys ran under 26:50 with no one in the stadium. that's insane. no added energy there.. and they still dropped insane times.
1. gebrhiwhet
2. barega
3. kijelcha (10k track debut, 26:49) <- insane
