saw this guy yesterday for the first time .. dude can fly:
https://www.athlinks.com/athletes/141071369/results
(https://i.imgur.com/ULmSSFA.png)
FAST AF.
he did the 5k yesterday (it was a 5k/10k combined race), just took off @ 5:05 min/mi pace.
-
that guy who won the 10k last week, he's weird.. on FB, he posts that he wins etc, but lies about his times. I don't get it.. it's very odd. I think he's age-grading his times or something? very weird. (he's done it like 3 times since i've friended him on FB)
or maybe i'm missing something?
original post:
E mais uma vez conseguir cruzar a linha de chegada em primeiro lugar geral nos 5 km. Aqui no Sul da Florida. É a terceira prova do Desafio das 8 previstas. Tempo: 16:55
Agradeço a Deus e a todos que torcem por mim.
Agora descansar porque amanhã tem mais
FB translation:
And once again you can cross the finish line first overall in 5 km. Here in South Florida. It is the third proof of the 8 planned challenge. Time: 16:55
I thank god and all who cheer for me.
Now rest because tomorrow has more
all i know is both posts say 16:55..
the reason why I think he deliberately lies about his times? He doesn't post the screenshot of the times:

he cuts it off..
17:34 official 5k according to the results, which is still flying.
people are weird man. :/
Also for what it's worth, I looked up the results because I wanted to see Bryan Gonzalez's time. Young dude, going to be pretty fast I think. I've raced him a few times and wanted to see if he dropped a serious time:

in legit local runner news, the guy that organizes the Loco Rio track workouts/long runs got 2nd OA at this big 10 miler today:
http://accuchip.racetecresults.com/Results.aspx?CId=16337&RId=210
59:45 @ 49 years old...... he beat some LEGIT people. pretty interesting. He's been on an absolute steam roll since November 2017.
Also what's funny is, he's the guy that kind of dislikes my race strategy etc but seems to be coming around to it a bit more... so, he said he wanted to go out at ~6:15 pace for this race, but there were so many good people there that it forced him to go out at 5:5X LMFAO. So uh......... they forced you to go hard huh? and you did? and you dropped an insane performance?? ... gj. lol.
dude is legit tho, from 5k upwards.. apparently his 15k today would have got him top3 in the florida 15k championships for 45-49 or something. He's going to be a monster at 50+, could end up being one of the top dudes in the state or who knows, maybe bigger.
He hit a 17:32 5k recently but he started out at like 6:00 pace & ended with like a 5:26 mile.. he does the most insane negative splits. I def think he's a sub17 5k, sub36 10k, sub1:20 half guy. Probably could drop a sub5 mile too if he stopped thinking he was "slow". People are so weird. lmao.
but ya, we don't see eye to eye for the most part but, mad respect. dude is on a tear.
-
This guy used to tear it up around here .. one of the rare sub5 split guys for 5k's.

Also, Miguel Tellez (local running/triathlon legend) had a heck of an experience.. dude is tough as nails. And when he says in this, that he was hit by a car, he was: he got smashed by an SUV during a triathlon when he was full speed sprinting on bike. Cracked his helmet, tore ligaments, broke bones, people thought he was dead.

There are races that define you as an athlete, and others that define you as a person. Today was definitely the latter.
LA CARRERA AFRICANA DE LA LEGION, a race held in my hometown in Spain, but physically located in Africa (Google Melilla and you will understand). After several editions, I was finally able to find a way to do it. This race is certainly outside of my comfort zone: 50k with 70% off-road trails and a lot of hills. So, pretty much the opposite I use to train for, and something impossible to replicate in Miami.
Anyway, the race is AWESOME. Perfectly organized and very special thanks to the Legionaries.
I have all my family watching the race (something almost never happens in Miami) and many friends from many years racing or watching it.
Then, AT MILE 5, in an asphalt area with no danger at all, I don’t see a curb while saying hi to my family and I severely twist my left ankle to the point I was very close to falling down. I immediately realize that was a bad one and I loudly profess some profanities. My race was over. And in the most stupid way possible. I had ahead of me 26 miles of hills and off-road terrain. No way I can finish this one...
Or can I...?
In any other race, I would have retired. Period. I have never abandoned a race except once for a mechanical problem on the bike and another one when a car run over me. Still, I always say and believe, that you should abandon a race if it is jeopardizing your health. We are not professionals and we are not kids anymore! Most important thing is to stay healthy for many more years.
BUT this wasn’t a normal race. It was the Legionaries race. In my hometown. With all my family watching. So... what do I do? Just keep going. I am determined to finish that race even if I have to do it crawling!!!
The rest of the race was, as expected, a grueling, painful experience, with my ankle hurting pretty bad, particularly going downhill, and in off-road areas. I was literally limping most of the way down and couldn’t help but cringe and moan almost constantly.
I stopped at mile 15 and got an improvised bandage fix. It helped a little, but not too much. Also had to stop several times to put back the bandages that were falling apart from time to time.
The last 5 miles, though, were flat and on asphalt and, since I was limited by my twisted ankle for a good portion of he race, at least I had some energy left in the tank, so I pushed hard and was able to pass 4 runners.
Ended up sprinting and screaming of pure joy & rage at the same time.
Just after I crossed the finish line, I sat down... and from that moment on, I simply couldn’t walk. They had to take me to the medical tent, where they confirmed I had a “pretty decent” sprained ankle. ”So, when did you twist your ankle? at mile 5” 😵 (exact doctor’s face).
From there, my family took me home and we celebrated my odyssey. They couldn’t believe I had been able to finish.
This is a race I will never forget.
It is a race that forged me as a person. Problems at work or in daily life? Piece of cake: If I had the guts to finish that race, anything else is a walk in the park! 🙂
A lot of people wonder why we do what we do. Why suffer over training, racing. Why so much sacrifice. Well, this is why. This makes you stronger, it makes you feel alive. Only athletes will understand this though.
By the way: finished 7th overall.
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. IF YOU HAVE AN SPRAINED ANKLE DURING AN ULTRA MARATHON, BE SMARTER THAN ME AND RETIRE.

insane results but, heard from reputable sources the 5k was 0.25 mi (400m) short damn!!!
https://events.hakuapp.com/events/ec0de17fc244a953f002/event_results
#1 ran 14:13, so apparently more like 15:2X. (https://www.strava.com/athletes/18323843)
"everyone PR'd" so.. heh. sucks.
quote from reputable guy:
When over 27,000 runners signed up for the Miami Corporate Run (the second largest 5K in the nation, mind you!) most did so to go out and have a good time with their coworkers and some did it purely for the competition. Both, however, deserved an accurate course that was actually 5 kilometers and not one that was a full quarter mile short. Runners deserve better. Miami can do better.
I found a clip of them moving the finish line into place .. seems like they dropped this thing off at the completely wrong location:

wow.. this mostly slow race, had major prize money. no one down here knew about it.
1st $3,000
2nd $2,000
3rd $1,000

If I had known about it, i'd have gone down for it and luckily won $2k or $1k .. insane.
I imagine it'll be batshit crazy fast next year.

kinda SFL .. Tampa and such.
think i've posted about Mott before. His gf just won the pittsburg marathon (2:32:38, elite).
one of the fastest guys in all of FL.

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/2018/02/21/each-lap-remains-a-lease-on-life-for-distance-runner-jon-mott/
Days before his high school graduation, Jon Mott sneaked off to a dugout in the baseball stadium. There, he stripped down to a pair of track flats, pulled a ski mask over his face, and dashed to the nearby football stadium, where a Vikings intrasquad game was being held before the entire student body.
"I can't believe how well it worked," Jon recalled. "I literally hopped the fence, (ran) clear straight through the middle of a play, and the fans were going crazy."
With football players in pursuit, Jon scaled a fence — naked, mind you — and made it to his buddy's getaway car in an adjacent neighborhood. They got about two blocks before four cop cars surrounded them. Jon was banned from the prom and Northeast's graduation ceremony. His twin brother picked up his diploma.
"After I graduated with my undergrad and I was done running for college, that's when I decided I was healthy," he said. "And I started running as much as my body could handle."

looking up the tampa turkey trot, found this guy, used to kill it back in the day:

some other oldschool names i'm still seeing today:
Chris Miller
Eddie Ernest-Jones
Both guys seem crazy fast.. 14:XX-15:XX 5k's back then (late 90's/early 2000's), still 15:XX 5k's today.
-
man what happened to SFL running? insane!
I actually won this race a few years ago, with like 18:4X or something? I forget.. That WOULDN'T even get me top 40 in 2000. WTF?

sonja got 23rd that year, which is insane considering she's so damn fast.
GLOBAL WARMING or something wtf?

man I missed out on some incredible years down here. I need to do my part to try and bring it back. :ninja: :derp:

Eddy Ernest-Jones is apparently a local legend.
I think this is his IAAF: https://www.iaaf.org/athletes/great-britain-ni/eddi-ernest-jones-245746
crazy.. Coral Springs son!

I opened up a can of worms in the local running group.. I made a history post, talking about some of the past results & the fastest people, and now there's tons of posts, mentioning so many other people who were incredibly fast.
One new name I learned of which hadn't seen before: Paul Mwangi
Tons of people are commenting on it.. pretty cool. I love history of "scenes", so i'm always digging through past results, looking for names & seeing who they were etc.

Donald J. Trump Fifth Avenue Mile. wonder if anyone will name anything after him ever again.
ya lol. i joked with the guy who sent me the photo, who is probably a repub but not much of a trump fan. i said it was probably 200m short to inflate times, or a russian money laundering operation. whatever, i lol'd.
and i doubt it & hope not. his photo will be in schools/all over though, and shit will be named in his honor, unless he's "brought down" & disgraced. hoping for the latter.
-
he's disgraced already. then again there are apparently two public schools named after nixon (!!!!!). obama's got 13 already.
http://time.com/4226561/president-richard-nixon-public-schools/
according to that article, nixon visited one of the schools in 1989 and the kids sang him "this land is your land," a left-wing protest song written in 1940, when nixon was a lawyer for petroleum companies in california.

Nah he's not disgraced, that's the problem. He's a disgrace, but he's not officially disgraced. Unless he is officially disgraced, his supporters & colleagues will re-write history & make it seem like he had the best presidency of all time. They'll erect monuments of him, name ships & schools after him, just make it seem like his presidency was a utopia. Meanwhile it's an absolute train wreck & the guy is batshit clueless watching fox news all day, shitting on our institutions and constitution.
The only thing that will somewhat fix this mess, at this point, is seeing him impeached. But Trump's done a good job at creating this whole deep state conspiracy and denigrating the FBI, war heroes, free press, career civil servants etc. Yea, a disgrace.
Other than Trump, it's hard for me to think of someone I actually hate. I legitimately hate him.
And fuck his mile race.

i've learned about soo many people who were insanely fast in this area, it's crazy.
i mean this one old schooler even wrote this:
In 1996 I ran 16;44 and didn't even finish in the top 3 in my age group even after they took out the top 3 overall and top 3 masters. There wasn't as many races back then, so the quality showed up at the fast races. The heart run 10 k from holiday park was another super fast race from 1977 - mid 1985 there would be 5 guys sub 30.
5 guys sub30 for 10k.. wtf?

well... Nacho Hernando didn't disappoint. His first race in the "local SFL" running scene, drops a 14:59 @ the Weston Memorial Day Classic 5k.
I thought he was going to open with a 4:50-4:55 mile, so I went out hard with him.. but realized quickly he was going out way faster than that, and had to hang back after like 0.1x mi. He went out at 4:35 for the first mile.......

4:35, 4:51, 4:56
he barely dipped into the 5's..

local runner, long history on athlinks, mostly long distance. some really nice marathon times.
he's really beast. he's like 51 now, had brain tumor/surgery last year, and is still dropping 19:XX 5k's mostly, with an occasional sub19. every time I see him on the out&back courses, man he's pushing himself so hard. he's tough as nails it seems.

local runner. has 1,124 races.
that's the most i've seen so far, i think.

some of the results are wrong (5k/10k) but he has some good numbers.

the guy who beat me straight up last race. he was tailing me, really breathing hard af, for 1.5 miles, then i started fading, and he stayed until 2, then he made a move and i couldn't stick, i was dead. he was dead too but he just pushed through it.
anyway, he's not necessarily "faster" than me, i mean by the stats he's way slower on avg, but he's an ironman guy, and those guys are fu*king tough. he showed his toughness in that race, really impressive. I mean he doesn't get into sub18 much but he hung with a 5:27 first mile, that seems outside of his "norm" i imagine. just shows how important "guts" are. he hit like 17:4X that race. Honestly i thought he was going to be toast by 2.. he just sounded like he was overworking. but then it turned out I was toast, and he was toast-but-kept-pushing.
lots of ironman's, triathlons, etc.
he was a really nice dude too.
https://www.athlinks.com/athletes/173894410/results
i've trained with a "former top sfl ironman guy" before, those dudes are tough. they really know how to grind out the pain.

how the fuck @ this SPM.

The first big weekend name race, Saturday's fourth Home Depot Scholarship Run in Parkland, will serve as a gauge whether running's popularity is waning in South Florida.
After four weeks of road racing, race directors are concerned with the the dropoff in participation. Thus far, there is a 40 percent drop in road racing compared to 1994 races in October.
The creation of the South Florida Grand Prix Race Series, has done little to increase interest, much to the dismay of Dan Healy, Fort Lauderdale Road Runners president and co-race director of Saturday's event.
also has some grand prix race leaderboard:

The envelope please... Best race: Tamarac Turkey Trot.
For the third year in a row, this race is the prototype of what a good, old-fashioned road race should be by attracting more than 600 runners on Thanksgiving morning. It also showed why race officials Lauren Scott and Ed Doyle, and the City of Tamarac Recreation Division, may go from handscoring to computer scoring next year.
my hometown race. often ends up being "best race".
These days runners want whistles and bows for their money. It's not enough to run a course, especially in 5Ks, the most popular distance. Great food; great race T-shirt; entertainment;, plenty of water; cheery, helpful volunteers; and, accurate certified courses and race results are imperative if the running community is to grow. Health fairs such as the ones held at the Jingle Bell Jog 5K and inaugural Imperial Point 5K were great innovative ideas.
ah cool. 1996 this gem appeared:
Best first-year race: Holiday Fantasy of Lights 5K, Tradewinds Park.

GRAND PRIX SERIES GETS SECOND RUN
The South Florida Grand Prix Series will return next season after a successful debut during the 1995-96 running season.
Dates and races selected for the series are:
Oct. 6, Coconut Grove 5-Miler;
Nov. 4, Home Depot 10K Run;
Nov. 17, Rotary Half-Marathon;
Nov. 23, Fantasy of Lights 5K;
Dec. 1, Baby Boomer 10K;
Dec. 8, Boca Raton 10K;
Feb. 8, Boca Dare 5K;
March 22, Imperial Point 5K.
No first-year races are allowed in the Grand Prix.
The series was started to breathe new life into the South Florida running community. Aside from a few scoring glitches and one or two poorly-run events, the series accomplished what it set out to do. There was at least a 10 percent increase in runner turnout at each of the grand prix races.
up 10% for each grand prix race, the initial year.

In an effort to rejuvenate road racing and bring the South Florida running community together, the South Florida Grand Prix Running Series returns for the 1996-97 season.
After working out the bugs, improving the format and increasing the quality of prizes from $700 to $5,000
sponsored by usatf:
It is the first of 10 races in South Florida's only running series, sanctioned by USA Track and Field of Florida
Last year, there was a 20 to 25 percent increase in each of the series races.
Prizes at the conclusion of the series are awarded for the top three overall, Masters and Grand Masters runners, and top 3 in every five-year age group from 15-19 to 70-and-over. Awards are also given to the top teams in the team competition. Teams consist of five runners and compete in one of nine categories, up from five categories last year. Last year only first place was awarded.
"I have always felt that the running community down here was very poorly organized," said Tom Vladimir, South Florida Grand Prix Running Series chairman, and recently-named Road Runners Club of America south rep for Florida.
"The running community has not been able to do a lot for the runners because it's so disorganized. We want to unite the running clubs and start bigger events. Our next idea is to work on a big race where all the clubs are involved with organizing it.
The other series races through March 22 are:
Winternationals;
Rotary Half-Marathon;
Fantasy of Lights;
Boca 10K;
Home Depot Run;
Daily News Half-Marathon;
Boca DARE Run;
Race For the Cure in Miami;
Imperial Point 5K.
Only Palm Beach Runners Club events are not represented in the series.

In brisk 60-degree weather, the Real Time Champion Chip made its Florida road race debut.
The revolutionary computer scoring system, introduced by Rick Stern of Weston and his company Split Second Timing, alleviates the need for separate chutes, handtimers and volunteers. It was used at Boston and the Olympics.

Because of misplaced race results, the Holiday Fantasy of Lights will not be used in the South Florida Grand Prix Series scoring according to South Florida Striders' president Brian Keno.
A stringer full of runners' names was lost during the race making it impossible to score the race completely an apologetic Keno said. The series will now score only nine races. ...

Four years after buying his first pair of running shoes and armful of running books, Brian Keno of Fort Lauderdale won his first road race Saturday at the Westfair 5K Run at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.
Keno, who turns 36 today, overtook a small pack of runners midway through the race and ran uncontested for the last half-mile to win in 15 minutes and 58 seconds. Keno, a consistent age group finisher, has been running competitively since late 1993.

Benji Durden coached Mary Menton.. interesting.
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1990-10-05-9002170923-story.html
CORAL SPRINGS -- The routine has changed now that Mary Level-Menton has a baby daughter and is still in the relatively early stages of a comeback.
Menton, 27, of Coral Springs, was one of South Florida's best runners in 1987-88.
A member of the U.S. marathon team, Menton competed in the 1987 World Championships in Rome, qualified for the '88 Olympic trials at the Houston- Tenneco Marathon and is a 1992 Olympic hopeful.
Menton resumed training this year six weeks after Sara's birth, Feb. 13. Coached by ex-Olympian Benji Durden of Boulder, Colo., Menton is running 70 to 100 miles per week. Only now, she has company on her training runs.
you never heard this anymore .. having a baby improves female running performance:
"My body has definitely changed," Menton said. "Women are faster and stronger because our heart muscles increase in size when the heart is pumping more blood when you have a child. Benji was very conservative with me. We started walking the first day. Then when I wanted to run 6 miles, he would have me do only 2."

an early "SFL" elite team, .. but not the first.. which was the first??? hmm.
International Sports Track Club
The team, International Sports Track Club, already has nine elite males able to run a 10K (10,000 meters) in 32 minutes or better.
They are:
Bobby Wilhoit, 24, Pompano Beach, 29:54;
John Loeffler, 24, Hollywood, 30:13;
Manny Miranda, 26, Miami, 30:25;
Pete Gathje, 28, Hollywood, 31:15;
Kurt Hurley, 26, Fort Lauderdale, 31:19;
Jim Hill, 27, Fort Lauderdale, 31:25;
Mark Miller, 27, Fort Lauderdale, 31:47;
Owen Paris, 38, Miramar, 32:24;
and Monty Stickel, 25, Fort Lauderdale, 32:30.
John Loeffler was a 3:58 miler!!
Loeffler, a cross country and track coach at Chaminade High School and a former 3:58 miler at the University of Florida, admits the idea of forming a running team was partly selfish. He had trouble getting into track meets around the state because he was running unattached.
The team plans to run Wilton Manors, Orange Bowl 10K, Florida Derby Festival, Gasparilla and the Jacksonville River Run.
Benji Durden ran for Atlanta Track Club
"I think sponsors made a big mistake (concentrating on) world-class runners," Fulton said. "How many local runners know what kind of shoes Joan Benoit wears? But when they're in these local races, they know what the elite runners are wearing because they see them at the start and finishing lines.

"waning interest" in 1985.. wtf?
There may be fewer runners on the road because of waning interest, but that doesn't mean there will be fewer races
Orange Bowl 10k had 22 olympians.............
The biggest change in road racing will be the Orange Bowl 10K. Organizers of the world-class road race that had a field of 2,000 runners, including 22 Olympians last year, are moving the Feb. 1 event from the Miami-Dade South campus to the streets of downtown Miami. Because of the heat at the afternoon race last year, the start may also be moved to the evening.
Because of the summer heat and humidity, training is difficult for even the most accomplished runner. But with the beginning of fall, training is increased, and so are the number of races.
south florida runners, moving out to train/work:
With the mention of October races, runners start expecting better times. The single most important factor is the weather. South Florida saw four top racers migrate to the north for training and business purposes: Rich Bogaty to Pittsburgh, Dan Copper to Raleigh, N.C., Harry Vaughn to Orlando and Shirley Silsby to Cape Cod, Mass. West Palm Beach's top road racer, Curt Boitnott, is also planning a move to north Florida for business reasons.
Bob Dugan was from FL?
There are still plenty of top runners in the area. Hollywood's Bob Dugan, 31, is South Florida's premier road racer and has been running for 17 years.
The men's racing scene looks strong with Boca Raton's Jim Alexander, last year's Washington D.C. Marathon winner; Jim Hill, 27, of Fort Lauderdale; Bobby Wilhoit, 24, of Pompano Beach; Ron Stetina, 30, of Highland Beach; and Vince Neal, 24, of Coral Springs.
The women's competition is a different story. With many of last year's leaders not competing, the heir apparent may be Boca Raton's Jodi Brunner, who after an injury- plagued career, won three races late last season.

Last year's Palm Beach Runners Turkey Trot was a disaster for seven people -- race director David Earley and the six lead runners who were led eight- tenths of a mile off course into a dead end.
Blaney, Hill and Barbash were among the six runners who were led off course by Earley, riding the lead golf cart last year. Cones marking the course had been moved by a motorist leaving an adjacent parking lot. Earley discovered the error too late. There was a frantic sprint to the finish, but the six runners finished 13th through 18th

Paradise Run Series
Raes, of Fort Lauderdale, continued her local dominance in women's road racing Saturday by winning the fifth and final Paradise Run Series at Markham Park
Cynthia Raes
"I look at the Series races as a tuneup for the season," Raes said. "I want to break 37 minutes for a 10K and 30 minutes for 5 miles if it's the last thing I do.
"I want to concentrate on the short stuff now. I've been working on too many distances. Now I feel I'm really getting better because I'm pushing myself more. I just want to continue to run locally and satisfy myself."
Raes, who has been running since January of 1978, ran four marathons to try to make the qualifying time (2:51) for the 1984 Olympic marathon trials. She had only a strained quad muscle in her right leg to show for her efforts. Today she still feels the effects when she races over 18 miles.
"I learned the hard way about overrunning," she said. "If I wasn't able to run I would be upset. I guess after all these years I take my running for granted."

South Florida's largest 10K, which benefits the Broward chapter of the American Heart Association, is expected to attract about 4,000 runners for the 8:15 a.m. start at Holiday Park. Last year's race raised $50,000 in pledges and donations. The race is endorsed by the Florida Governor's Council on Physical Fitness.
Bob Dugan won 8 Heart Run 10k's in a row.
Hollywood's Bob Dugan, who has competed in the last eight Heart Runs but never won, is favored for the men's overall title. Dugan, one of South Florida's top road racers, has been plagued with injuries and allergies. He is coming off a 31:49 performance in the Orange Bowl 10K. Dugan finished second in last year's Heart Run in 31:21.

LARRY GREENE OF TAMARAC WAS A HALF MARATHON RECORD HOLDER.
WHAT.
THE.
FUCK?
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1985-06-28-8501260021-story.html
Tamarac's Larry Greene enjoyed being a world-record holder in the half- marathon for a month.
"Some of them could care less about a certified course," Fort Lauderdale Road Runners President David Bowden said. "They take too many shortcuts. It bothers me because it takes away from the authenticity of the race. The serious runner is concentrating on PRs (personal records) all the time he's out there. If the course is short or long, it takes away from that enthusiasm."
Greene, 24, who trains in Tallahassee, said he was prepared for a short course. The 13.1-mile Citrus Bowl half-marathon course was 50 yards short. Greene's time was 1:01:32.
1:01:32 WTF.
"If they measured the course again today it would probably be a different distance from the times it was measured before," Greene said. "I suppose the people at fault were the ones who called it a world record from the start. It would probably effect someone else differently, but losing the record didn't take anything away from me. My primary gain was that I ran a completely challenging race. I feel pretty badly for Salazar (and Roe) finding out after three years. That's pretty rough. I blame the race director for not following up.
"I don't think anyone in road racing today ever expects a world record anymore because of the imperfections. In track, where it is set up so perfectly, it's different."
Greene, 14:15 @ run for the pies 5k.
jesus.
The rewards were sweet for overall winners Sue Overbey of Lake Worth and Greene at last week's Run For The Pies 5K in Jacksonville. Not only did they cash in, both won apple pies. Overbey ran a personal best 16:54 for the 3.1- mile course and Greene ran 14:15. . . After a 5-year hiatus, Miami-Dade South will resume its track program this winter. Jerry Isom, who will return as coach, has signed Miramar High discus thrower David Salsberry, who won the state discus title this year with a throw of 183-6.

Sunday's Danny's Mile in Coral Springs doesn't match the grandeur of the Fifth Avenue Dream Mile in New York City, but give it time.

"It could become one of the most competitive races down here," Alvarez said. "Who can run the fastest mile in South Florida?"

LARRY GREENE
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1986-02-22-8601110844-story.html
Larry Greene ran the race of his life Dec. 8, 1984, when he set a world record at the Citrus Bowl Half-Marathon in Orlando.
Everything seemed perfect.
But weeks later, he was stripped of the record - 1 hour, 1 minute, 27 seconds - by the National Running Data Center in Tucson, Ariz., because the course did not meet certification standards.
However, when he came out of nowhere to beat a world-class field that included heavy favorite Brian Dunn and Martyn Brewer and Keith Brantly, the former Florida State track runner became an instant celebrity. Last year the accomplishment haunted him.
"What happened to me last year shouldn't have happened," said Greene, one of the favorites for Sunday's sixth annual Race of Champions Florida Derby Festival 10K Run at Gulfstream Park.
"I wasn't prepared for world records at the age of 24," Greene said. "I had counted on doing everything progressively, but when I ran the record, everything went out of whack. I wasn't able to handle being on the verge of (becoming) a world-class athlete."
Greene continues to train in Tallahassee for Team Adidas. He prefers to keep a low profile. He still wants to be a world-class runner, but not at all costs.
"I sacrificed so much in six months to run that record," Greene said. "I quit my job, I gave up a lot to go through some incredible training and buildup. I had an all-or-nothing attitude with my training. That was no way to live. I found out I wanted balance in my running and in my life."
Greene, a former track and cross country state champion at North Miami Beach High School, trains in the cool, less humid climate of Tallahassee, where he helps coach the men's team. His parents live in Tamarac.
Last year, despite bursitis in his right heel and the record aftershock, he won the Israeli Maccabiah Games' 5,000-meter race and finished second in the half-marathon.
Greene's best for 10,000 meters is 28:51. He hopes to run under 29 minutes against a field that includes Mexico's Marcos Barreto, who has won 11 of his last 12 10K races; two-time Boston Marathon winner Geoff Smith; Pittsburgh Marathon winner Ken Martin; former Olympian and Peachtree winner Filbert Bayi, former All-American Adrian Leek and sentimental favorite, four-time New York and Boston Marathon winner, Bill Rodgers.
"I am trying to get back on my feet after last year," Greene said. "In the last few weeks I've had a real training breakthrough as far as running long, extensive interval sessions in good times. I'm at a point now where I am making a transition in my training. The intensity is there."

Mark Sheehan 30k winner.
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1985-11-25-8502230496-story.html
he chilly altitude of Lima, Peru, didn't agree with Mark Sheehan, but the warm, flat course of Sunday's Tour of Coral Springs did.
The 23-year-old Tampa runner won the 30K race in a course-record time of one hour, 38 minutes and 3 seconds at Mullins Park. Sheehan, an assistant cross country and track coach at the University of South Florida, finished more than 10 minutes ahead of Miami's Julio Valdes (1:48.06) and Fort Lauderdale's Jim Hill (1:48.11) in his first attempt at running a 30K. Race favorite Steve Mandel, a junior at USF, finished fourth in 1:51.06. The previous course record was set last year by Tamarac's Larry Greene, now training in Tallahassee for Team Adidas.
Boca Raton's Jane Millspaugh, 37, won the women's title in 2:06.20. It was her fourth Tour of Coral Springs victory. She won in 1980, 1981 and 1983.
Sheehan crossed the half at 1:07...
Sheehan, a former walk-on at the University of Florida, was a six-time All- Southeastern Conference selection in track and cross country. Sheehan had hoped to run most of the race with Mandel, but Mandel dropped off the pace at the 3-mile mark. Mandel has been working his way back from a series of injuries. He was coming off four weeks of high distance (more than 100 miles) training. Mandel was bothered by cramps around the 17-mile mark.
"The hardest thing to do is push yourself the last few miles," Sheehan said. "I was shooting for the course record, which helped push me. I felt great throughout the race. I went through the half marathon at 1:07 and felt more relaxed. Now it hurts. I'm glad I didn't have to keep running for a marathon today."

Bill Rogers dropped a sub29 (28:54) 10k down here.. at the Derby 10k, gulfstream park.
4 x Boston & 4 x NY Marathon winner
masters world record holder at the time
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1986-02-24-8601120223-story.html
Veteran runners Bill Rodgers, 38, of Sherborn, Mass., and Priscilla Welch, 41, of Britain, won the men's and women's overall titles. Rodgers, who broke 29 minutes only once last year, finished the 6.2-mile course in 28 minutes and 54 seconds. Welch, the world master's record holder in the 10K, half-marathon and marathon, defended her title in 33:45.
4:24 first mile.. jesus christ.
Rodgers, who won the first Florida Derby Run, took the lead at the 2 1/2-mile mark after mile splits of 4:24 and 9:03. Barreto, bothered by the humidity, finished second in 29:17. The Mexican had won 11 of his last 12 10K races. Smith, a two-time Boston Marathon winner, was third in 29:40.
"I am shocked," said Rodgers, coming off a bout with the flu. "I was just hoping to finish in the top five like last year. It makes me feel good only because I haven't beaten some of these guys in a while."
Rodgers, coming off a week's rest, ran only three times in preparation for the 10K. By the 5-mile mark, he had a 200-yard lead on Barreto and Smith. Greene, training for the Azalea Run in two weeks, dropped off the pace at 4 miles.
"I knew Marcos and Smith had great speed," Rodgers said. "When I took the big lead I said to myself, 'Boy, I'm going to die in the end,' and I did die some, but I guess the heat was on my side because they never outkicked me.
Barreto was amazed at Rodgers' resistance to the heat. Rodgers escapes the January/March cold by training in Phoenix.
Jacqueline Gareau:
Welch had a 20-yard lead on Canada's Jacqueline Gareau before picking up her pace late in the race.
"I just like to prove, and I think I have proved, that the old women can get there with the young women," said Welch, who served in the British military for 12 years before she started running competitively three years ago. "The age is really not a factor. You just train a little harder when you're older and you need a bit of natural talent as well.
"In the past people used to say, and I was one of them, 'Oh, I'm too old to do something like that.' But, you're never too old. If you want to do something, you set your mind to it and you will do it, no matter what age you are. Even at my age you can get up there with the youngsters, win a little bit of money now and again and have some fun."

Inaugural Palm Beach Marathon
Larry Greene in 1:10 .. in "horrible conditions"
BOCA RATON -- If running 31 miles in the 50K or 13.1 miles in the half- marathon didn't get to Saturday's inaugural Palm Beach Marathon field of 243 brave souls, the wind, heat and humidity did.
"The conditions were useless," said Larry Greene of Tallahassee. "This is so much of a change from what I'm used to. It's the warmest it's been by about probably 10 or 15 degrees. I know when it gets this bad, you pretty much throw out the watch and not think about times."
Greene was so far out in front of the half-marathon field of 203 that he didn't have to worry about time. The former Florida State runner won the men's title in one hour, 10 minutes and 52 seconds. Boca Raton's Jim Alexander was second, despite having to wait 10 seconds for a drawbridge to come down, in 1:18:17. Miami's Mike Ward was third in 1:21:27.

A prize purse of $1,000 in athletes' development funds will be divided among runners completing the run in less than 30 minutes in proportion to the runner's finish. Officials are stressing the race is not only for the elite woman road racers, but for part-time runners, joggers and fitness enthusiasts.
An important purpose of the race is to raise funds for the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. Merrill Lynch Realty, national sponsor for the U.S. Olympic team, is giving a major portion of all entry fees to the U.S. Olympic Fund.
Greg Meyer
-- Former Fort Lauderdale Heart Run (1983) and Boston Marathon winner Greg Meyer sat out this year's Boston Marathon. Some say he has never recovered from his 2:09:00 winning performance in '83.
"I think I paid a high price for winning Boston, only because I didn't give myself a chance to recover," Meyer said. "I came back too soon, and it ripped me apart. Derby 10k recap:
https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1985-02-11-8501050206-story.html
Hussein set the early pace, even though he didn't plan to. Hussein, working on a master's degree in economics at the University of New Mexico, went out with Fort Lauderdale's Dan Copper for the first 2 miles at splits of 4:28 and 9 minutes. Nenow, Smith and Ken Martin of Phoenix, Ariz., stayed within range in the second pack. Copper dropped out after 2 miles and Hussein opened a 20- yard lead. Nenow closed the gap near the 3-mile mark and matched Hussein stride for stride at the 4-mile mark with an 18:17 split time. The two were even with about a half mile to go at the Gulfstream Park entrance.
Dan Copper from FTL, 4:28 / 9 with Hussein, first 2 miles.
hah:
"I knew I had a good kick for him," Hussein said. "I have never run against Mark, but I know him from his reputation. He is a good, fast runner. I wanted him to control the pace early, but he didn't want to. I was very relaxed out there. I would have run faster if some of the other people had taken over, but nobody did. It seems no one wanted to run faster. I always find myself leading in every race. I'm not trying to control the race; I think it's just my instinct that tells me to be in front. Even when I'm out of shape, I end up in front."

An olympic gold medalist in the marathon (Carlos Lopes), came down to race a 10k..
"Miami Winter Games Orange Bowl 10k"
Lopes, 39, of Portugal, who won a gold medal in the marathon at the Los Angeles Olympics, heads the men's field for the Miami Winter Games Orange Bowl 10K, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a separate field for invited runners and an open field for the local runners' race at 6 p.m.
Many of the world-class runners will use the Miami Winter Games competition as a tuneup for the Feb. 8 Gasparilla 15K in Tampa.
Steve Scott raced a mile here:
Scott, America's premier miler, will join some of the world's top milers for the Miami Winter Games World Class Mile, also on Feb. 1, at 5:15 p.m.
JEsus:
New Zealand's John Walker, who has run a four-minute mile in more than 100 races and Ireland's Frank O'Meara, winner of last year's Fifth Avenue Mile in New York, will also compete. Former world record holder and 1980 Olympic gold medalist Steve Ovett withdrew because of a schedule conflict.

nice interview with Bill Rodgers
@38
While he doesn't win many big races these days, Rodgers remains almost as fast as ever. While the track stars and foreigners have replaced him at the finish tape, his times are still impressive. Last September he ran 59:08 in the New Haven (Conn.) 20K. That's two 29:34 10Ks back-to-back and his second fastest New Haven time in seven years. He has an impressive collection of American single-age records, owning more than 30.

BILL RODGERS GOT PEOPLE PAID.
By offering an innovative $250,000 prize money package, due largely to Rodgers' outcries and two-year boycott, the Boston Marathon has thrust itself back on top of the running world.
"Runners have to eat, too," Rodgers said. "Runners are just like everybody else, with bills to pay and everything. I owe too much money to too many different banks. I have to run and the prize money is a major factor."
Rodgers "dropped out" of the Boston Marathon the last two years when the Boston Athletic Association refused to join other major marathons and offer prize money. With the world's best runners opting for the wealthy marathons, the BAA finally responded to Rodgers and other elite runners who warned the world's oldest marathon would rapidly lose its prestige.
A 10-year, $10 million contract with the John Hancock Life Insurance Co. has given the marathon new life. And Rodgers, who said his 'No money, no me' attitude was not a question of selfishness but a question of feeding his family, has returned to the fold.
"Last year was a joke. It was terrible." While Geoff Smith was walking across the finish line because of cramps, ahead of a weak Boston field, Rodgers was being paid $20,000 just to show up for the New Jersey Waterfront Marathon, in which he finished second.

Hostility is the word the runners turn to. Objects are tossed at them, obscenities hurled, gauntlets flung. Tires squeal and exhausts belch in their faces. The comics lean out the window and bark "hut, hut, hut," like sergeants, or make crude sexual comments. In Gainesville, where Shorter attended the University of Florida Law School, his wife Louise had to give up running alone because of the constant vicious provocation. In New Mexico, where Shorter's parents live, his father once had to shadow him in a car, packing a handgun, to ward off those psychotics whose regular amusement was to try to run Shorter down.
Frank Shorter (testifying before the President's Commission on Olympic Sports): "Well, I graduated from Yale in 1969, and I decided that rather than go into medical school I would become a runner, much to the chagrin of all the Puritan-ethic people in New England, and I started training about 80 miles a week, and it has gone up to 150 and 200 miles in a week, and I think in the last seven years I have maybe not run 15 days, and that is twice every day in the last seven years, and just day in and day out, all of the year round...."
Shorter says, "It is a fine line, but to me the object is not to beat someone, but merely to live up to your potential. If you do, then you will end up winning a lot, but you won't be beating anybody. I hate to lose as much as anybody I know, but beat people? I guess that's why I never could have been a good team player—because it's never been that important for me to beat people
haha
The coach says, "Even after he won the gold medal, if he was at a track meet and heard a gun go off, he'd start running—5,000 meters or something, which he couldn't possibly win. So once I told him, 'Hey, Frank, if you really want to get beat, why don't you go in the shotput?' You see, I was worried for him. Most guys get very upset when they're beat. But then it occurred to me that Frank isn't ever bothered by losing, so why shouldn't he compete?
"To start with, distance runners have a more ascetic mentality, the kind that the saints of the ancient church exhibited. But that doesn't mean we should ever make the mistake of feeling sorry for them. Why should we? After all, to feel good again all they have to do is stop. Now Frank's of this type, like all these sackcloth and ashes guys, but he can still have a lot of fun, too. Life is more important to Frank Shorter.
^^ haha.
With time on his hands, he approached Giegengack one day and said, "Gieg, if I really worked at it, how good could I be?"
Without pausing for breath, the coach shot back, "Well, I think if you really applied yourself you could be very good. I think you could make the Olympics and even win a gold medal."
Shorter nodded and promptly began two-a-day workouts. A month later, he was the NCAA six-mile champion. And one thing led to another and so on and so forth, and three years later he won the gold.
Says Kenny Moore, a fellow Olympian, a good friend and the man who introduced Shorter to the marathon, "Frank does whatever he has to do, whatever is needed. Ultimately, he even won a gold medal that way. That may not make much sense unless you know him, but that's the way he is."
"These things just work out for me. I've always been a good scrambler. I was always predicted to underachieve, but I always got by. If one approach doesn't work, I'll try another, and I have the confidence that it'll work out. And if you're living where you want to live, like I am, then it's easy to be satisfied with your work, with your life. I'm not iconoclastic or a misanthrope—nothing dramatic. I just get by. It's nothing complicated. But I guess it's just functionally impossible for the cafe mentality to comprehend my life."
"I've always been able to work hard at what I was doing," Shorter says. "That's never been my problem. It's only a matter of making up my mind in the first place. Whenever I've made decisions, major decisions, it's just been a case of me getting up in the morning and sitting there on the bed and deciding, yes, I'll do this. Like that."
Shorter says, "After 20 miles everybody slows down, and it is just a matter of trying to hold on. It's no longer a question of racing. In distance running, the definition of faster doesn't mean speed anyway, but just a matter of maintaining a pace longer. After 20 miles, the places are set unless a guy dies." Marathoners commonly use that verb instead of "collapse," "drop out," or whatever. They all say die.
The best runners are those that attend strictly to business once they are on the course. The less successful long-distance men tend to be those who "disassociate," who admire the scenery or who let their minds wander. By contrast, Shorter cannot even recall running through two beautiful parks in Munich. All the time he is running, he is busy concentrating on strategy—how the race is shaping up, his form and rhythm; indeed, he uses the word "feedback" as if his own body were a foreign object he was studying. But then, we all know time just flies when you're having fun. Instead of two hours and a quarter—to be precise, 2:12:19.8 in Munich, the second-fastest Olympic marathon—it hardly seems like 45 minutes to Shorter.
Despite the overriding issue of stamina, a marathon is not devoid of strategy. The matter of the lead is crucial, for the man in front carries an emotional burden. The runners-up dogging his footsteps may be moving exactly as fast, expending exactly as much energy, but somehow the man out front assumes a great burden. The others wear down, but the man in the lead is torn apart.
"Psychologically, we are using the leader not unlike the way automobile drivers use the physical principle of drafting," Shorter says. "If the man in front cannot break away, he will eventually get caught. I cannot tell you exactly why, but I can promise you that it will happen. Therefore, if I am in a position to take the lead, I know that I must be capable of more than that. Once I've committed myself on the lead, I have to quickly pull away, break that mental contact—if just by five or 10 yards—so that the others can't use me to get drawn along."
great read. ;d

citrus bowl half, talks about the mistake the year prior.
Unfortunately for Jacksonville's Larry Green, somebody involved with the administration of the 1984 Citrus Bowl Half-Marathon just didn't do their job. Green, a good regional runner who had never set any national records, ran the race of his life on the flat, fast course through the streets of downtown Orlando last December to set what appeared to be a half-marathon (13.1 miles) world record with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 27 seconds. But when the course was measured by an official of the sanctioning national
Green's record was negated by problems he had absolutely no control over. In order to make the starting line more accessible and convenient, a decision was made by the Orlando Bureau of Recreation to move the start ahead to in front of the Lake Eola Bandshell on Rosalind Ave. Unfortunately, no adjustment was made for the distance lost in the change.

Mary Level-Menton ran a 1:16 half, 1.5 years after getting into road racing.
Level-Menton, who began road racing 1 1/2 years ago in order to lose weight, finished sixth in 1:16:27.
Level-Menton, 24, of Seminole, was more concerned with her social life than anything else four years ago. She ran track in high school at Port Townsend, Wash., joined the team at Oregon State as a walk-on but quit running in 1981. After moving to Florida, Menton, 5 feet 3, decided to begin training again after she ''ballooned to 115 pounds.'' Eighteen months later, she has a 35-minute 10K, 53:13 15K and a 2:43:35 Twin Cities Marathon to her credit.
^^ after 18 months of training.. insanity.
