Title: BMI's of champions
Post by: adarqui on January 13, 2016, 10:46:23 am
just enjoyed looking at the BMI numbers of various athletes

http://www.runnersworld.com/run-the-numbers/bmis-of-champions-mens-edition

my bmi right now is 20.4 .. i could use a bit more lean mass though and a reduction in ~8-10 lb. of fat.

Interesting. What calculator did you use for yours? I read an article somewhere on the BMIs of past body builders vs todays that was intriguing. I'll see if i can find it and link it.

god i'm borderline overweight, 24.4.

there was an op/ed recently in the NYT about how people being overweight doesn't increase morbidity when you look at population-wide data. but then again if i'm almost overweight and chris is overweight by the most widely-accepted metric, then maybe the problem is that the metric is worthless.

BMI only works with people who have never set foot in a weight room IMO. All it takes into account is height vs weight but not that muscle weighs more than fat. Hell, all my life I was borderline 'overweight' or slighlty over and that was just from playing various sports and never having set foot inside a weight room.

ya. BMI is mostly useless for athletes but you still can conceptualize how someone is built "relatively" just given a height/weight & an idea of how lean they are.

I got 18.3 & 18.6 adjusted (at 6'1, 155, ~11% body fat). ;f

i mean yeah it's obviously useless for athletes, but even if i were fattier than i am at the same height and weight it would be ridiculous to say i was overweight. i'm thin.

FFMI (using 10% bf, which i think is a reasonable guess at the moment) i got 22.1/22.2.
