the lion is the equivalent of strength jumper who is squat master and muscles jump. Leopard is the equivalent of plyo king/sprinter who is fast as shit and probably jumps off of one foot.
Lion is king of the jungle so I better get to squattin! :P

The physical demands of rapid and economical running differ from those of physical fighting such that functional trade-offs may prevent simultaneous evolution of optimal performance in both behaviours. Here we test three hypotheses of functional trade-off by measuring determinants of limb musculoskeletal function in two breeds of domestic dogs that have undergone intense artificial selection for running (Greyhound) or fighting performance (Pit Bull). We found that Greyhounds differ from Pit Bulls in having relatively less muscle mass distally in their limbs, weaker muscles in their forelimbs than their hindlimbs, and a much greater capacity for elastic storage in the in-series tendons of the extensor muscles of their ankle joints. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that specialization for rapid or economical running can limit fighting performance and vice versa. We suggest that functional trade-offs that prevent simultaneous evolution of optimal performance in both locomotor and fighting abilities are widespread taxonomically.
so, they have "less muscle distally", ie, the muscle belly is higher towards the origin of the bone, which means they have longer tendons, especially in their lower leg (ankles, ankle extensors specifically).
very similar to humans and elite sprinting.

I love cats, too, always have. When I was a kid I used to be fascinated by cheetahs because I read about them being the fastest ground living animal on the planet. Here is some pretty good footage of a cheetah hunting:

' Cats conserve energy by sleeping more than most animals, especially as they grow older. The daily duration of sleep varies, usually 12–16 hours, with 13–14 being the average. Some cats can sleep as much as 20 hours in a 24-hour period. The term cat nap refers to the cat's ability to fall asleep (lightly) for a brief period and has entered the English lexicon—someone who nods off for a few minutes is said to be "taking a cat nap". During sleep cats experience short periods of rapid eye movement sleep accompanied by muscle twitches, which suggests that they are dreaming.[110] '

LBSS: "Racing sled dogs have enormous aerobic capacity. While the untrained sled dogs have an average aerobic capacity of 175 ml/kg/min VO2 max (ratio of volume of oxygen to body weight per minute), the aerobic capacity of the fully conditioned sled dogs is estimated to be about twice that (300 ml/kg/min)."

Haha yea badgers are vicious as hell. Used to have one that made his home in front of one of our deer blinds (not a honey badger, just a badger) that would come out and talk shit to me by snarling and growling every time I went to the blind. I literally had my rifle tip in his mouth on more than one occasion and couldnt bring myself to pull the trigger since he looked like some kind of pet or something lol. I finally conceded to call a truce and brought him bacon or ham every time I would go out there and he actually got fairly tame. He wouldnt growl or snarl anymore and he would politely go back in his hole once he was given the food.

Tarsiers
broad jump: 5m (more than 40x body length)
See those legs? The tarsier is an amazing jumper able to jump more than 40 times it's own body length. The hind legs can be twice the head and body length. In fact, their name comes from their powerful ankle bones - the tarsals. They like to jump and cling to trees.
2nd half of this one has a ridiculous jump where it picks a bird out of the air: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57qew_cglac
excellent... and this is why i'm obsessed with the cat family.. will probably use some of this footage, or find more HD caracal/"servel" footage for my next vid.. these animals inspire me :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-zcA_mOa94 Pretty cool explanation on how the cheetah is built for speed. "A massive chest holding huge heart and lungs to pump fuel to the muscles. Legs long and light with an extended achilles tendon for superior shock absorption...but the cheetah's legs are long and fragile so how do they achieve long strides? Most people assume that cheetah's speed is generated from their legs. They must have very powerful legs. It's actually on their spine. About 60% of a cheetah's muscle mass is packed onto its spine so if you combine that with its long legs you get an animal which has an average of a 23 foot stride length".
Also says a cheetah can cover a football field in 3 seconds. Crazy!!!

Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry, 26th (Yankee) Division in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 18 battles. He entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In April 1918, during a raid to take Schieprey, Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches. After being gassed himself, Stubby learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks, located wounded soldiers in no man's land, and — since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could — became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover. He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. Following the retaking of Château-Thierry by the US, the thankful women of the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals. There is also a legend that while in Paris with Corporal Conroy, Stubby saved a young girl from being hit by a car. At the end of the war, Conroy smuggled Stubby home.

Theyre pretty rare in Texas too, the price (1200-1500 for a solid akc papered dog) + the old myths surrounding them made it that way. Its still said over and over how they were bred to "kill lions", when the truth is they were bred to HUNT lions and keep them at bay until the hunters got there. No dog can kill a lion but people thought this along with them being "uncontrollable". The ridge is an adaptation from the wild dog they mixed into the breed and thats where that myth stems from.

he'll weigh between 100-110 pounds full grown. Hes a great dog around people, I take him to work with me and hes very friendly to everyone in the gym.

2. They will cuddle the hell out of you any chance they get. Everyone I know that has one says the same thing, they are going to get in your lap every chance they get, so get used to it.

Using 3D printed prosthetics, Derby the dog can now walk and run for the first time in his life. He was born with small forearms and no front paws like a furry little T-Rex, and he could only move around on soft surfaces as a result of the deformity. So 3D Systems created some new legs for him using a 3D scanner and a multi-material 3D printer that could build both the sturdy base and comfortable rubber cups.

Title: Re: Animals
Post by: vag on December 22, 2014, 01:54:48 pm
Fair. There is a huge debate in the comments section of the video about this, many people say it is somehow obvious that the bear was trained with 'positive reinforcement'. I don't know much about that, so i can't have a strong opinion. The guy gives a bite of food as a reward for every trick the bear does. If somehow the bear enjoys the tricks, or even just doesn't care as long as she gets food, it's fine. It is a weird subject. We will never know what the bear thinks. E.g. , one could argue that the bear does not like at all to stay in a frozen river for hours trying to catch salmons, playing the trumpet is easier and more preferable for her ( btw, what is is the correct gender for animals in English? In Greek each one has a gender, bear is a female word, dog is male, lion is neutral ). To me it still feels like the animal is abused. But that is all intuitive. Who knows...
Title: Re: Animals
Post by: Raptor on December 22, 2014, 07:54:13 pm
To me... I don't think it is abused. It's not like it's in a cage and it's being whipped or something. At least, not in that video. Until there is proof that that has happened, I cannot comment further. Only positive evidence of that can make me change my mind in this case.
In Romanian, the nouns have gender, but also there's a bearess and a bear, a lioness and a lion etc.

interesting... so is there a preferred gender for an animal? in albanian cat is "mac," which is a masculine noun. male cats are also called mac, of course. but female cats are called "dac" though. same for you guys?
Title: Re: Animals

Here it depends... you can't "know" what gender it will be. Usually, whatever finishes in "a" is a female. For example, "pisica" (cat).
But you can't know. "Urs" = bear, and it's masculine. "Leu" = lion, the same. So... in English it's much easier.
For "urs" you get "ursoaica" as the female bear, for "leu" you get "leoaica" as the lioness etc.

raptor, i love that for your example of how english is easier because we don't gender nouns as much, you used a noun where english differentiates by gender! lion/lioness. we don't for cats.
:D

I have to post this (feel free to fill it up with negs) because I only watched 10 seconds of it rushing around scrolling through it, then closed it, then went in my bed pretending to want to watch an NBA game, then 30 seconds later rolled around in my bed crying like crazy for a long time. One of the most horrible videos I have seen, it absolutely hit me straight into my soul.

But then i read a bit more and there is some controversy about the complexity of thoughts koko can really express.
Here is wikipedia's entry about her : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koko_%28gorilla%29
Anybody dug a bit deeper into it?

Speaking of gorillas....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQWjkV7-cPQ
Edit: They removed the video. Found it in another angle. It is not nice to see animals fighting. But the original video i updated was so raw, so much brute force, it was breathtaking. It is not so evident here. Whatever, i am posting it.

Yeah it's hard for me to ever watch these kinds of videos.
The most I like about animals is their authenticity, there's nothing fake about that dog's feelings. There's much more fakeness in people, fakeness that makes me appreciate animals a lot.

i shouldnt have read that while eating, grosses me out for some reason. they have some enormous pythons in the everglades nearby, that's why I don't run on the levee. One day someone is going to get nabbed :/
you used to have to be very careful of gators around here.. they have it under control now. The babies used to slip through the grids and go into the canals nearby, then grow and you'd see full sized gators nearby, where people jet ski/boat/fish etc.. oh and where some idiot kids (me & my friends) used to jump off the bridge into the canal.
once we jumped into the canal, and we were swimming to the shore, and I saw a huge water moccasin swim across my friend's back.
really, we were lucky.. lmao.
Snakes freak me out way more than gators.
I once had a moccasin chase me by the canal too. I thought it was dead, so I snagged it with a fishing pole hook. I flung it onto the land. As soon as it hit land, it came right at me. I went USAIN BOLT status. I actually got some folks in a boat to give me a ride across the canal, because I had to run from "my side" around to the other side as it came after me. LMFAO.
I would seriously shit myself if I saw a python like that. :o :uhcomeon:

there's a nature center not to far away (i've never been there wtf), apparently they need food donations, lost funding or something. anyway they included some photos of some animals/birds/etc, these are cool:
Toward the end of our dive, when they were taking out the lights and whatnot, my comms mask started acting up. I was having a really hard time communicating. I couldn’t hear what was going on, and I was getting sprayed in the face with saltwater every now and then. It was just really uncomfortable. So when my dive buddy signaled, “Hey I’m going up,” and I’m like, “Perfect.”
As he was going up and I was about to go up, I was kneeling on my knees on the sandy bottom. It wasn’t that deep at all. I could stand. Suddenly I felt really hard pressure on my left calf, and I was like, “That’s weird.” I thought, “That’s my fin.”And suddenly I started getting dragged backwards, and was like, “Nope, that’s not a fin.”
bad. ass.

3:59 mile with a dog.

Quote
2 X Olympian Anthony Famiglietti runs a sub-4 minute mile with Bailey the dog on a wheel measured greenway course on 2/09/2019. The former record was 4:13. This course measured just a bit longer than 5280 which is exactly a mile. It measured 5285 feet at the shortest possible route. Bailey took a longer route as she did not always use the tangents. The wheel measurement of the course is in an additional video on this page. Several witnesses attended and filmed from several vantage points. Anthony is currently training to break sub-4 mile on the track and is in great shape. He has a personal best of 3:55 mile. The owners of Bailey the dog came into Anthony's gym in late January 2019 and said they had a fast dog and couldn't find anyone fast enough to keep up with her. They asked Anthony to test out how fast she really was. Bailey and Anthony likely would have run faster if she wasn't spooked by a drone mid run and had time to practice. This was Bailey and Anthony's first time meeting as well as their first run together. Anthony had also never run with a dog before. She and a team of researchers identified genes in dogs that in humans are associated with Williams-Beuren syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. One of the many symptoms of the syndrome is indiscriminate friendliness.
Dr. Berns has also found that, given a choice, some dogs prefer their owners to food.

with a good run up, he could probably get some good distance! hah. no idea how he'd learn to do that tho. would need a coach :derp: ;)
