Happened in game, came down from a layup thought id just sprained it badly looked down and my toes were pointing towards my left shoulder (right foot) paramedics ambulance etc came said it was almost through the skin. Had oxygen, morphine and then got put out so they could put it back into place which they did and then shoved it in a plaster cast.

Somehow no fractures although probably some quite extensive ligament damage. Have been told im going to be stuck in a cast for 4-5 weeks and then gradual mobilisation through pt.

Just wondered if anybody knew of anything I can do to speed the healing/prevent long term problems as much as possible or failing that entertain myself over the next few months with no ball!

not much you can really do except eat good/clean, follow their recommendations (elevation/immobility etc), and rest + good sleep every night..

irc keeps me entertained, so does watching movies & video editing.. when i tore my calf i was unable to walk for a few months, so i watched nba league pass, irc'd, coded (computer programming), and relaxed, it worked good.

peace man

The key to this so-called molecular memory resides in a donut-shaped protein on the surface of cells that secrete adrenaline, the hormone also known as epinephrine."

FUUUUUUUUUUCK man. That sucks!  Sad

I know a bit about ankle rehab just from personal experience and ad hoc research but that shit is WAY more serious than anything that's happened to my ankles. If you have any questions down the line, once you start being able to move it again and can think about strengthening and stuff, just shoot me a PM.

pics or gtfo
I fucked up my ankle in a similar fashion. I landed on it from a jump in the rolled position. My calves were quite developed so instead of bones breaking, my ligaments unwound and twisted my fibula ripping up the connective tissues between my tib and fib. Took a few months to learn to walk again, but I'm 100% now.
I did lots of eversion/inversion(?) strengthening exercises using home made equipment. I stood on a chair with a sack of weights hanging off the edge and did the movements. Lots of ankle flexion exercises. Pretty much you have to do a bunch of exercises that you don't do enough of, or ignore entirely.

funnily enough my first thoughts were not to get a camera out and take a picture of my deformed ankle... doctors later said i should have done  though, would have made a great fb profile pic...

ya im gonna go to a sports physio guy i saw when i fucked my back up and he should get me on a proper rehab program once its out of this cast and damm i did most of that ankle flexion/extension/eversion/inversion strengthening before cos ive sprained this particular ankle about 5 times

dont know what sort of ligament damage has happened cos they wont mri just x ray hopefully its not quite as bad as yours although they said it would be quite extensive whether they have stretched and gone super lax or just ruptured

i have actually healed amazingly well from this! im probalby around 90% now, my lifts are all either equal/above previous and im back in full training now, will be playing my first game on the 5th of january!

did ALOT of physio, still am...mobilistion stuff while there, then exercises including

resistance band plantar/dorsiflexion eversion inversion
calf raises - 1000 a day
wobble board -- 2 leg round world, 2 leg balance, 1 leg around, 1 leg balance
1 leg standnign stuff eyes closed etc
hopping exercises (1234, lateral hops, back/forward etc)
trampette stuff (squats/bounces etcetc

been full squatting/deadlifting etcetc for a few weeks probably a month now
lots of jogging..interval joggin at first then now onto 30minute runs etc, going to start introducing some sprints now
really have to thank for the physio a lot cos i very much doubted playing basketball again this season, nevermind only missing less than 20 games/3/4 months!!

one long term probably i may have from this is a problem on the tallus some kind of jamming. i feel it as a sharp pain when in dorsiflexion (e.g. squatting, landing from jump/running). this could be due to mobilty and may heal over time, or may be due to some kind of growth/osteophytees (sp) in the area whic will prevent mobility but it is not a huge problem and using heel inserts sorts the squats out and running is pretty much painless now

if i ever do suffer too much i can have surgery just to get all teh crap cleaned out but i dont think it willl come to that hopefully!
