Hey, I've seen random threads asking about specific supplements and the like, but I was curious what everybody's favorite pre-workout meal/supps and post-workout meal/supps are. Also, how long before/after do you eat/take them?

I'm re-evaluating my budget for food/supps so I'm just curious what else is out there and what seems to work for other people.

i usually try to get some protein in like an hour or so before i workout and some more as soon as i'm finished...i've started using waxy maize with the post workout(tastes like crap! and feels like you're drinking liquid chalk)but to be honest i have yet to see the effects of using it

maybe this helps?

Post-workout: 650ml whole milk, 30g natural whey, 50g instant choco

Pre-workout: imho, pre-workout starts after the last trainings PWO, so eat enough food and you wont need any special supplement or food pre-workout.

Post workout: EAS Whey Protein ASAP after

Pre Workout: Usually workout at 5 am, so I don't have time to eat prior.  I drink about 20 oz of water as soon as I wake up and that makes a world of difference for getting me going.  I mean, think about going 8 hours without a drink of water at any other point in the day!

I'm definitely noticing a difference with taking protein right after, and I try to get it in as a late afternoon snack, like 4 pm, because we don't eat dinner till like 7 pm usually.

How soon do you take if after your workout? I've been told, and this is just by a friend who works out a lot, that taking protein -immediately- after your workout is not ideal. He said waiting 35 or so minutes is better. Something about your body burning calories a bit more and being more accepting to the protein after it has adjusted to a post-workout/rebuilding phase. It made sense the way he said it and I may not be translating it right to you guys, but that's the basic gist of it I think.

Protein post workout is broscience.

They say you "need' it 30 minutes after, but what happens if your workout is longer than 30 minutes? Everything you did in the beginning is wasted?

I don't know if I'd place it solely in the "broscience" category.  I mean you're right about the fact that 30 min is not like magic time, but if that is a consistent time you can take it, and most people will remember it right afterwards as opposed to 3 hrs later.  Also, people that are consistent about scheduling their nutrition and workouts, tend to be the ones that see results.  One of those "correlation does not indicate causation" kind of deals.

However, if it works for you, broscience or not, why not stick to it?

Your friend is a dangerous brotard and you should probably distance yourself from him. There's actually some evidence that consuming WPC soon before your workout has a greater effect on protein synthesis than consuming it afterward. Protein takes a while to digest regardless of when you eat it. The most important thing (by far) is to get enough protein and calories throughout the day. Getting some protein soon before (small amount), during and/or soon after your workout is definitely a good idea but your muscles will not fall off if you miss that crucial 35-45 minute post-workout window.

That said, joejoe's point is good, that if setting a schedule for yourself helps ensure that you get what you need, by all means, stick to a schedule.
