Week 1

Quote
Saturday (12/25/10)

Squat
135 x 5
135 x 5
185 x 3
185 x 3
225 x 1
245 x 1
265 x 1
285 x 1
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4
270 x 4

So pissed off I missed the workout yesterday. Every single damn gym was coded, so I moved the workout to today and I'll skip the 10x3 this week because if I did it I'd be squatting heavy three days in a row.

Today was pretty easy. 3 minute rests between all sets. Had much left in the tank when I was done.

Week 2

Quote
Monday (12/27/10)

Squat
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 2
245 x 1
265 x 1
285 x 1
255 x 6
255 x 6
255 x 6
255 x 6
255 x 6
255 x 6

Bench Press
45 x 5
95 x 5
135 x 3

Chin Ups
198 x 8
198 x 8
198 x 8

Absolutely zero soreness entering this workout. Not as easy as last week, but still not challenging. Took 3.5min rest breaks in between sets because I don't want to be sore like I was last week from the 6x6. While unracking the bar, I was having some elbow pain on all sets (but only while unracking...). The elbow pain continued onto the bench press, where it hurt a lot more, at which point I decided to stop. Squats are more important. I won't fight through the pain if it may mean I miss a squat session due to greater pain next workout. No pain on the chin ups. The numbers listed on the chin ups are my bodyweight including the clothes and ipod and everything measured right before the sets (because that's what I'm actually lifting with my arms).

sometimes direct bicep curl work can really help with elbow issues experienced during 'extension' (bench, punching, etc).. i know you're doing chins but that also has alot of lat involvement.. try finishing with some bicep curls maybe, 4x8 etc at the end, might help.. just my 2cents.

Aright thanks for the input. Lol, after the first several words of that post I laughed haha then I saw you were serious. Guess I'll try some if there's still pain while unracking tomorrow.

Today (Tuesday) was a good day. Very little soreness in legs and upper body as well. Played a lot of half court and three quick full courts. I dunk easssssily off two feet! Felt great.. then I decided to try a 2-hander off two feet and holy shit I had NO idea I could still do it! I missed it, but I got high enough FOR SURE.

This is really good news for me because it means that when I'll be very well rested after smolov is finished, I should be able to easily throw 2 handers down again, and POSSIBLY a 2 handed tomahawk like I did about 6 months ago.

I guess I didn't lose much vert after all..

lol get those dude's out of your head who go "curls are for girls" and shit.. all of those twerps can suck my d&&k.. they can also suck it when it comes to "ATG OR GO HOME" etc, but that's another topic i've covered many times ;d

ya i was serious, direct bicep work has helped my 'elbow issues' MANY times hah.

peace man, btw, high frequency training + good diet = soreness is rare, good stuff man.

Week 2

Quote
Wednesday (12/29/10)

Squat
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 2
245 x 1
265 x 1
285 x 1
270 x 5
270 x 5
270 x 5
270 x 5
270 x 5
270 x 5
270 x 5

Minimal soreness entering the workout. I didn't do any dynamic stretches or have my weightgainer with me (which has carbs, protein, and creatine) so the warm ups felt pretty damn heavy. I was convinced that this was going to be my first *tough* workout of smolov jr. I took 4min rests between sets. Elbow pain from last workout disappeared.

Well, the first couple of sets were tough, but then I started to really focus on bouncing out of the hole. Sets 4 and 7 were the easiest of the workout! Something really cool happened on the last set. You know when you shoot around for a long time, and you REALLY get into the groove of your shot? At that point, you don't think about how you shoot the ball; you just think "shoot," and your body shoots. You're not concentrated on the form or anything. It just happens.

Well that's what happened to my squat on set 7. My mind thought squat, and my body just squatted. It was cool because I didn't even feel any of the pain or exhaustion from putting out so much work. It was like I was just on auto-pilot. That would be the best way to describe it. I definitely contribute this instance to the high-frequency of the squatting in smolov.

nice man!

ya i get that most every time on big MSEM clusters.. the reps towards the end start becoming the best, don't even want to end the session.. that's been happening with my jump sessions lately too (odd for me with jump sessions).

Hell yeah. And I could only imagine the effect would be better if I had my lifting shoes since my chucks are all ripped up and pretty unstable at the heel. They're torn up on both insteps, like down to the sole.

Absolutely ZERO soreness today and I only have 5hrs of sleep and just a single post WO meal... damn...

Week 2

Quote
Friday (12/31/10)

Squat
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 2
245 x 1
265 x 1
285 x 1
305 x 1
285 x 5 (supposed to do 288lbs so I loaded up 285 with two collars on both sides).
285 x 5
285 x 5
285 x 5
285 x 5
285 x 5
285 x 5
285 x 5

Minimal soreness entering the workout. Still, I need to warm up better in terms of lubing up my joints and getting more blood flowing.

This was the hardest workout so far, but it still wasn't that tough! Entering the workout was very tough though. The warm ups were very hard to do (just like last time for some reason, but harder). The 305lbs was much more difficult than I would have liked (c'mon, I've done 325x5 and this seemed comparable in difficulty).

I really thought that today would have been the first true mental test of smolov i'd have, but it wasn't. Set 1 was very difficult. Sets 2, 5, and 8 were the easiest. I went true ATG on the 8th set and the bar still went up pretty quick. Used 5 minute rests throughout.

In retrospect, the workouts always seem easier than I thought they were going to be. Going into them, they seem VERY tough. I guess it's because the sets don't get harder and harder as you progress, but rather, sometimes they get a little easier. Once you complete half of the work sets, you know you'll make it through no matter what.

I remember thinking that tomorrow's 10x3 may be nearly impossible for me to complete at 305lbs, but right now, I feel like it's doable. I better eat a LOT of food right now and tomorrow morning!

when you are you going to get some "athletic" movements in your training with smolov? oh and we got blown out by poughkeepsie too. we held their d1 players to 4,16, and 12 points respectively but their others guys hit shot after shot. it was ridiculous.

I'm not. I need full focus if I want to stay alive for another two weeks. Although I do play pick up games and if I'm really hyper I'll try a few max effort jumps (nearly had a two handed; got high enough but missed the basket).

When did you notice the most translation from squat increase to jump increase?  Was it after you started repping 3 plates?

I ask cause I am 6'3, about 205lbs and have the goal of getting my squat to repping 3 plates by mid year.  I am hopeful that will translate nicely into my vj.
