ya man, you definitely can maintain most of your strength in-season.. the best way i've seen to do that, is to throw in volume days when you can (1-3x8-10, no extended rest between reps, stay 1-2 reps shy of true 8RM) and focus on msem 1x/week (variant 1 or some custom variant, pushing it when you feel good). Getting the volume in at a lower percentage of 1RM is effective, and it doesn't drain you as much mentally/physiologically as <= 5RM's etc. So you help maintain the muscle mass stimulus with the volume day, without pushing your cns to the max, then on your MSEM day you hit a few heavy singles and get out the gym, works real good. If you can maintain purely on singles, 1x/week, that'd be even more ideal. If that's the case, you just throw in a volume day once every 2 weeks or so instead of every week.

peace man

I like the idea and I am going to do it that way! Going once a week and lift some heavy singles - what could be more fun?  Grin

Prior to my lifting session I played 90 minutes of indoor volleyball, just to get more jumping volume in and see where I stand right now. Despite still having had DOMS in the calves and hamstrings it went a lot better than expected after the jumping session two days ago. I was getting up much better than Wednesday and my playing was just fine. Had two great, very powerful jump sets but was otherwise holding back and tried not to destroy the game too much. The other people were all amateur players and it was not my intention to ruin it for them. I went to the gym right after that. Obviously I was a little fatigued when I arrived already, but I thought more explosive stuff would be pretty beneficial.

Counter movement jump:
- best attempt: 31"
Powersnatches:
- 138 lbs x 1 x 10
Powercleans:
- 215 lbs x 1 x 2
- 215 lbs x F
- 209 lbs x F
- 209 lbs x 1 x 4
- 198 lbs x 1 x 2
Bench press:
- 198 x 5 x 3

Bodyweight: 197 lbs

Commentary: Counter movement jumps in the gym were a little higher than those on Wednesday (not quite 32" yet though) and felt smoother overall. In the gym I train at there is kind of a wall hanging from the ceiling which is pretty much 10 feet high at the lowest point (I measured it months ago). That is where I jump. After volleyball session I was anything but fresh but a funny anecdote occurred though: One of the trainers working there came to me grinning from ear to ear and said, that two especially abs-obsessed guys came to him with eyes as big as saucers saying "Hey man, your squat friend just jumped to the ceiling!". They seemed to be very impressed by my rather mediocre jumping and bothered me to do it again. I did on last jump for them and hit the highest of the day. It might have even been the highest jump I ever did at that gym, since for some reason my jumping performance there always sucked (probably due to the floor and the very limited space there).
Powersnatches went very well. It's the first time I incorporated them in a training routine so I was going light. I could snatch more for sure, but my form is not as constant as I would wish yet, so it's still technique practice.
Got a PR in the powerclean which I am very happy about. At that point I was pretty exhausted though and took some weight off the bar and went light for the rest of the reps.
I intended to do 3x3 on the bench press but the weight felt so light that I just did 5x3. Could have done more reps, but I am satisfied with that considering my recent messing around with the technique. Seems I finally got right and I will try more weight next time. Still, the focus is on maintenance right now.

Squat: 402 lbs x 5 x 3
Press: 138 lbs x 5 x 3
Deadlift:
- 309 lbs x 1 (double overhand grip)
- 314 lbs x 2 (mixed grip, alternating hands)
- 320 lbs x 2 (mixed grip, alternating hands)

Bodyweight: 202 lbs

Commentary: Solid work-out. Squats felt harder than last time, probably since I played some easy beach volleyball yesterday. But was doable nonetheless. Press went well, last set especially was very explosive. Deadlifts went good, erectus and hamstrings did their job well, good form I think. 320 is in fact a PR, even if it is nothing special really.

Squat:
- 397 lbs x 2
- 408 lbs x 2
- 419 lbs x 1, 419 lbs x F
- 408 lbs x 2
- 419 lbs x 2
- 446 lbs x 1
Bench press: 204 lbs x 5 x 3
Chin-ups: 1 set (6)

Bodyweight: 201 lbs

Commentary: Squats felt pretty heavy and I even failed with the second rep at 419 lbs. Remember, these are paused reps... I maned up and attempted 446 lbs anyway. Did it.
Bench press felt light again. Technical changes were really worth it, first two sets were very solid. Last one was harder but more due to short rest time than anything else. Rounded up the work-out with one set of chins. Did 6 with another one in the tank.

Drop step vertical jump (alternating LR and RL plants):
- 1 x 16

Commentary: Did some very light sprint starts and dynamic stretching for warm-up as well as some broad jumps. I got 9'7 after 4 attempts. After some practice 10' won't be unrealistic I think.
Left-right plants feel incredibly weird. First time I have ever attempted them and it feels completely different. I even have to think about my arms... Have been taking it easy most of the time after yesterdays lifting session but additional to my 16 drop step verticals I tried some RVJs as well as SVJs to see where I am at. SVJs were substantially lower than yesterday (about 2" less), so I am clearly fatigued after not quite 22 hours after my max squat. Hit 32" in the RVJ though. So I hope to get some good jumps on Saturday when I am (hopefully) properly rested.

curious to see what you would broad jump when properly rested too.. that should have suffered if your SVJ has suffered.. nice on the RVJ/broad jump.. that's a sick broad jump.

kill it saturday man!

^^^This. 9-7 is pretty legit for a BJ*, would have been second-best for QBs at the NFL combine this year (tied with Teboner). Interested to see if you can hit 10 feet when rested/amped.

Bodyweight: 201 lbs

Depth drops: 5 x 2 (18")
Depth jumps: 5 x 2 (18")

Depth drops: 5 x 1 (28")

Standing vertical jumps: 1 x 10
- best attempt: 32"

Drop step vertical jumps: 1 x 3
- best attempt: 32"

Comment: Depth drops and depth jumps felt solid, even those from 28", which I tried out of curiosity. Could absorb the force pretty well without substantial loss of technique. SVJs felt pretty good, 32" is not a bad number for me. Guess it might very well be a PR (no logged data from 4 months ago though). Drop step vertical jumps were close to impossible since there was a heavy shower this morning and it still rained a little when I arrived at the court, which is made of tartan (was in hometome visiting parents). Got 32" on the first or second trial. Nearly slipped on the third one at what felt like a very good plant (adjusted the step length a bit). Canceled the work-out after that since I would have been holding back anyway. This sucks, since I feel that I could have gotten some nice numbers today (as indicated by SVJs). However, still have plenty of time to get that drop step vertical up for the coming season. I'll be back!

damn that really sucks about the court surface.. looks like you would have had some good progress on the RVJ's for sure.. 32" RVJ is good stuff man, congrats!

Thanks man! Constantly making progress now and catching up to my previous bests. I am quite confident that I will have PRs in the drop step and running vertical jumps some weeks from now, too! Weather can sometimes be a bitch and ruin my work-outs since I don't have access to an indoor court atm :-/. But luckily it's nice here most of the time...

Session 1

SVJs: 1 x 5
- best attempt: 32"
DSVJ: 1 x 10
- best attempt: 32"
RVJs: 1 x 5
- best attempt: 33"

Commentary: First session of two today. Warmed-up well and performed some SVJs to see whether I am still fatigued from Saturday. Got 32" repeatedly, so it seems I have been fresh. Have been jumping on concrete today while I clearly prefer tartan or some nice bouncy gym floor, but you can't have it all. Kept the volume low though, so the joints did not make any problems. DSVJs could have been higher, got an easy 32" on the first attempt, but lower on the others. Guess my form is still very inconsistent with me planting sometimes too much under the rim and sometimes too far away. Needs practice. Got one very nice RVJ which was easily 33", maybe a little higher. That's not too bad for this particular court. Going to uni now and will hit the gym thereafter for cleans and snatches. Feeling good!
