My name is John Martin, my name on the forum is JPMartin5.

I want to go to the NBA.  yeah, thats thats right.  the National Basketball Association.

I've had this dream since maybe the age of 10.  It's not limited to merely making it to the NBA.  I want to win championships.  I know I might sound like a complete nut.  But I really don't care.  I'm making this silent dream public.

You guys can say what you want, but this is what I've wanted deep in my heart for a long time.

I don't even know where to begin.  I'm 18 years old, and I'm nowhere close to where most people who are prospective NBA players are.

I've just graduated from Rockhurst High School, in Kansas City, MO.  I didn't play basketball for the Varsity team, not even for the Junior Varsity team.  Not because I chose not to play, not because of academics.  I wasn't good enough.

I'm attending Loyola Marymount University next year.  It's located in Los Angeles, California.  They have a D1 program, and I am going to try to walk on as a basketball player who never played on his varsity team.

well, just don't let someone tell you that you can't do something.. got to put in the work though, and from the sound of it, going to be a ton of work, especially skill wise. you'll really have to analyze your strengths/weaknesses for both athleticism & the sport of basketball so that you can really optimize your training. You definitely have to be getting in some competitive basketball throughout the week too, i'm not talking shitty games either, so hopefully you can find some good games somewhere. University's usually have some good pickup games/open gyms from what i've seen.

"Now Cornell University neurobiologists, studying the adrenal glands of rats, have discovered how chronic stress cranks up the intensity of this adrenaline response. The key to this so-called molecular memory resides in a donut-shaped protein on the surface of cells that secrete adrenaline, the hormone also known as epinephrine."

PED's in drug free sports is cheating, unethical, and weak. Athletes and/or coaches who condone/display this behavior can get lost.

That's a lofty goal man and to achieve it you need the right mentality first and foremost. I'm gonna leave you with a quote that made a strong impression on me and its something you need to think about.

Stockdale Paradox:

"You must retain faith that you can prevail to greatness in the end, while retaining the discipline to confront the brutal facts of your current reality."

I came across it when reading a book for one of my business classes. I love it so much because it connects the idea of faith, hope, optimism with that of reality and pessimism. It might seem silly or simple but its definitely something to keep in mind. Also realize that in the end it really comes down to having the right discipline.

Good luck following your dream. I wish you the best.

^ unless you have some genetic freak height / build, il leave you with homer simpsons idea - aim low, avoid disappointments.

but seriously, if barea can be that much of a factor in playoffs games.. skills may cover lack of height/athleticism to some degree.

good luck and train smart.

everyone told me id never be able to even play for a division 3 school or community college because i was too slow and couldnt jump at 5'8. Now i can dunk easily and am playing on a great AAU team and because of my determination im going to play d2 or higher because of my shooting skills and willingness to give 100% on defense and rebounding even though im short. you gotta work as hard as you possibly can but everything is possible

Is this a question?  Earn millions to play the sport you love at the highest possible level?  This is the dream of millions of people.

Not enough of a reason if that's the reason for him, tbh. He's gotta want it more than just at the "get money and hos" level.

Could be enough. It depends, really. At a stage so late in the game you have to be driven.

I have been doing so much thinking lately.

I just have come to a realization that has brought me peace of mind.

I'm not going to make it to the NBA.  I'm just not.

So I'm just going to enjoy my freaking life.  This past week has been an awesome week.  I've spent tons of time with my friends and working and getting stuff done for college.

I just know that at the end of the day, what matters to me is being happy, and bringing joy to other people in the world.

My previous posts might contradict this, but whatever.

I might still post my training on adarq, but I'm gonna focus more on my life outside of fitness.

Adarq I just want you to know that you're awesome.  You're the fucking man.  just keep doing you because thats really what matters.  Keep training hard and getting results because you're an inspiration to a lot of people.  You have definitely been a good example for people who want to make progress athletically.  Keep beasting those squats and tearing up those rims.  I know you have the bounce to do a windmill, so I just throw one in there to silence all the haters!!  I know it sounds funny coming from me because I probably drank the most haterade on this site.  But anyways, I'm gonna keep watching your videos and what not.

Basically, I need to stop toying with childish dreams because I really don't have the time or work ethic to make it.  I really love my life and I'm going to enjoy alot of other things now that I'm not so worried about basketball stuff.

Everybody on adarq keep working your asses off!

man... never ever... give up your dream without a fight man... The most common thing in our society is unsuccessful people with potential...

You are here for a reason and the most important thing you can do in life is to find, live and share your purpose. It’s the one thing in life that truly matters and if you don’t pursue it, everything else is meaningless.

just keep going... you got nothing to lose man!

And maybe he's found his purpose, and maybe this wasn't really his dream, just something to kick around while bored and think "hey, wouldn't it be cool if I was an NBA star?"

It's just that it's really, really late to decide that he wants to enter the NBA, and he probably just realized how miniscule the chance is (with having to skill build, build his athleticism), with all the other freak athletes barely having chances themselves. It was just a reality check for him.

Now, that's for him, though. If you want it, I say go get it.

Best of luck, dude.
