Yea dude it's wild, first the mma trained Russians attacking fans and now some Croatia fans throwing flares. I didn't really understand why since Croatia was up and on its way to securing qualification with 6 points. They ended up tying after that happened. Just wild stuff that I hope security can stifle.

On another note, I've enjoyed copa america more than the Euros so far which I didn't expect. The European squads have just gotten so tactical with their play that they're almost robotic with their approach. No one wants to give up space or opportunities so few risks taken and not many goals.

The copa america on the other hand has had many exciting games with open play where teams are risking more and bringing more excitement out.

Lastly, I just watched Chile pounce on Mexico 7-0 and I have to say I've never been more suspicious with a team as in this match. Mexico has been playing very well as of late and had great momentum plus the crowd on their side tonight.

So first 15min I see the Chilean players pressing hard and making many full effort sprints both to win the ball and to attack. I'm like ohh crap this is making for exciting play, I wonder if they'll get a goal before they tire. They score and I'm thinking okay the plan worked now they can sit back a little. They keep going max effort everything up to the half and score another to make it 2-0. At this point I'm like okay wow I've never seen a team play at that intensity for that long it's quite strange. If I was the Mexico coach I wouldn't know what to say except keep playing your game and they'll tire, wear down, and we can get back to it.

So second half starts and the Chilean players are back at it again with crazy high intensity pressing and runs to create opportunities. They cause turnovers and keep scoring. I dunno man I've never seen anything like that after watching a lot a lot of soccer matches. Their players look quite strong and stocky (sprinter like) but just the fact they kept challenging with crazy intensity for such a long time made it suspicious to me. I haven't seen the fittest of the fit able to sustain that sort of play. Dunno maybe it's great training or I'm missing something but I just had the feeling of this seems off. The one player who stood out is 30yo and just now making appearances for Chile internationally. He was just amazing in his ability to track back and tackle at full speed (played as a attacking winger) then make full out runs to create scoring opportunities on the other hand and even had two goals himself.

I'll see if I read anything about this tomorrow but it just seemed off to me. They do have two superstars who played great as well but just the level of explosive fitness from the rest of the squad seemed unnatural almost. Just in awe.

ya it's crazy. made no sense.. i guess when hooligans are angry/confident/winning, they attack.. and when they are angry/losing, they attack.... HEH. if they did that stuff in the US (say in Copa), US security would probably shoot them, thinking they are terrorists.. pretty disrespectful to do that stuff in Europe given all of the stress their security/people are under from the threats they are facing.

damn.. now i'm pissed i missed that match. tmw ill see if i can check some of the highlights etc.

copa has def been exciting, so much attacking.. euro has been good but, lots of missed opportunities; for example, Ronaldo was beast today but missed everything, even that free kick. If portugal doesn't get into the second round in Euro, and Brazil didn't in Copa, pretty nuts.

Tuesday, USA vs Argentina (9 PM).. going to be sick. too bad we're missing a few players due to red/yellow cards.. whatever tho, we still have Dempsey. :F

here he is tying his shoes, slowly setting up for this free kick from way out, basically like it was inevitable that he would score.. boom, goal.

ya it was really disappointing.. our passing was just horrific. we'd just give the ball up nearly every possession.

But there’s another way to look at this, endorsed by Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl, and it’s almost optimistic in its bleakness. The USMNT and their fans needed this wake-up call, the argument goes, not necessarily because the team was bad (they were not good), but because it’s hard to truly appreciate the greatness we aspire to without that greatness having its way with us. This is what a world No. 1-ranked team looks like, and for all the progress U.S. Soccer has made in recent years and decades, for all the pride justifiably taken from evolving into a competent soccer nation, the Argentines looked like they were playing an entirely different sport out there.

the article doesn't take it to the next step, which is: jurgen klinsmann is absolutely right and we need to start flooding european clubs with any talented american kids they'll take. MLS is fine and all, i'm glad it's getting more popular. but it's a B or C league. we have more people than the uk, germany, france, and spain put together. we have metric tons of very athletic children, many of whom like to play soccer. we just don't have anything resembling the technical skill of even the likes of portugal and we are not capable of developing it domestically past a certain point. someone pointed out before the game that argentina has a player, sergio aguero, who would be the greatest american player of all time but COMES OFF THE BENCH for argentina. he joined his local club's youth program at age 9, made his senior team debut at 15, then left for atletico madrid at age 18 and has been in elite european competition ever since. more of that, please.

England have the aggressive stance and have a higher possession rate and are able to create chances but they just always mess up, they need some skillers and some team work, for some reason they all want to be the hero of the match.

They managed to get through to the knockout stage but when they come up against a strong team they have less chance of winning.
wales have been awesome, especially that free kick from gareth bales against england and slovakia. they have a better team then england even though they lost to england.

ya man we looked like we didn't belong there at all. I was in awe of argentina just casually passing the ball back and forth, while still attacking.. was so effortless for them. They had no "panic". Every time we touched the ball, we were in panic mode.

I thought that Shaqiri goal was the best of the tournament so far!

Man but these European teams continue with their very tactical approach, I was disappointed in that Croatia v Portugal match. Those are teams that traditionally play good attacking futbol but no one wants to risk much until the end it seems. More goals than ever being scored last minutes of matches here.

Germany plays tomorrow and they're my favorite to support. You'll see no caution on their end, just take to the opponent all match long.

USA v Columbia tonight too! That USA game v Argentina was unfortunate, you can see a lot of the players lack the class when the speed of play is at the top level. But it also stinks for the US bc they can't sit back and defend and counter bc it's the USA and they're expected to go out there and compete with the top. It would also be more difficult to draw in fans to a team that defends much. So it's unfortunate really they didn't give themselves much of a chance.

I also thought that Messi goal should've been saved. Guzan is a bit on the short side which I think hurt him but he also got wrong footed. Compare to this save made tonight by Fabianski v Switzerland.

Holy shit 2-1.. I honestly think its a mental thing with England. They have an air of superiority that always hurts them. It dates back to them founding the sport and thinking no one was anywhere on their level before being proved wrong.

They did it again during the group stages when they tied Slovakia and blamed it on the fact that they were defending the entire match and you'd hear the commentators say they'd be better fit for the elimination rounds where teams played them to win. Germany beat Slovakia 3-0 btw. Even after Iceland's first goal the commentator said something like "cheap counter punch goal". I just don't like how they don't give other teams credit and fail to accept how good they actually are.

:uhhhfacepalm: what is wrong with england, they can never pull it off. They always seem to lose out in the knockout stages.
they had a good team but didn't play well as a team. especially against iceland, which i know were the underdog.

But Iceland played well also despite the yellow card on every play in iceland lol.

England need to learn to play better as team and have better chemistry.

Who measured it to 9'6". ?

Lol.  That's ridiculous.  If you ever played soccer you know the art of getting up on a header has to do with vertical leap than skill and body control with contact... The little shoulder contact is everything...

this is possibly the "real championship match". should be tough for each of them. I hope France wins (via my french roots), but I also think they will win regardless.. they have been impressive this tournament.

also glad to see Ronaldo in the finals.

man he looked like the Lochness monster today on that header/goal he made.

Ha never adarq, Germany is going to be very tough to beat! Even though they have their central defender, central midfielder (both 1st and 2nd choice), and central striker out they're still a very confident unit. I think it might hurt France that they're playing at home because if they chose to come out strong and attack, Germany can hurt them on the transition. That's what happened to Brazil when they got crushed 7-0.

France may chose to play it cautious but even then Germany comes at you strong. They haven't really exploded in any one match (maybe Slovakia) but I think they might be due. I like the French a lot, I really hope both teams play an open game and go at one another and we see a great game. It's just not happening much this tournament.

undoubtable,

GRIEZMANN!!!

i didn't actually see the foul that resulted in that penalty. but man, griezmann is so impressive.

france started out great early, then germany dominated for 35 minutes, then bam.

can't believe garoud screwed that opportunity up when he was on the break, mostly alone.

1-0 FR.

FRAAAANCE BEAAT GERMANNYYYY 2-0  :wowthatwasnutswtf:
Griezman the hero of the match.

The penalty was from a handball by schweintsteiger from a corner kick. He flew in leading with his hands.
When boateng was taken out, this gave france more advantage and the goal.

Now its a cruise to victory by france against portugal, which is not as difficut as germany, but anything can happen when ronaldo, nani are on the pitch.

Congrats Adarq I didn't want to comment yesterday while still salty lol! I had my Germany jersey on too and listened to the first half on radio and watched the second half.

While listening I was confident that Germany was going to win since France came on strong in the beginning and left themselves open a bit (the Brazil comparison I made) but Germany just couldn't convert their play into goals. Tactically, they're the best side in the world I believe because they mix in those long diagonal balls from their back line to their wing backs out wide but also play a lot of Barcelona influenced tiki taka with the short secure passing through the middle of the pitch with the aim of drawing in defenders then you try and either switch the field or play in through balls to get opportunities back on goal. It sounded like they kept doing this in waves first half but just couldn't finish. They missed their big central forward Mario Gomez a lot. He's quite poor on the ball lol but he can hold back center defenders and just hold the ball long enough to allow other players to get into good position. Then he can also just tap in balls in the box by out powering players and running through them lol. Not pretty but useful.

Everything changed with that France penalty though. It took all the pressure off France so they could sit back on their half and counter attack. From what I saw they just had a lot of athletes out on the pitch and were shutting down the German players. Sissoko was amazing with his strength and power. And yea man Griezmann has been a hero, always at the right spot at the right time. His ability to win balls in the air is just rediculous. He just has great hops plus amazing technique in the air. We need to find a highlight reel of his goals. Then like seidullaah73 mentioned the other Germany center back got hurt and that made them even more volnurable. 2-0 game over congrats to France.

The only thing with Portugal is that they're going to make the game ugly and hard for France to win. They've done it all tournament and gone this far so it's not easy to beat a team with an identity even not the prettiest one lol. They won't take many risks and will make it hard for France to get through and Portugal will hope for one of their stars to step up and make something happen. You never in soccer matches honestly but France is obviously the favorite.

ya griezmann is just so smooth with the ball, being in the right spot, excellent passing, and so calm/under composure when he's on goal.. he doesn't just spaz out and kick a dud into the air.

I was really worried in the first half of that game.. but, even though Germany was dominating, France had some great opportunities in that first half.. so they had chances while still being outplayed, and then bam, goal in what, the 44th minute?

i love the all blue jerseys with red high socks.

ronaldo looked devastated.. man he kept trying to just change reality, hoping he'd be fine. you can tell he was really hurt.

really sucks.

i mean i'm going for France but I hate to see Portugal not being able to compete at their best.

it was a great goal by eder. can't believe gignac's didn't go in and then that griezemann (?) was like 2 feet away from being in position for an easy tap-in.

Weird goal... the ball bounced on the ground a few times, that really messed up the goalkeeper, he was so late jumping for the ball.

:uhhhfacepalm: Oh my, can't believe portugal won it, amazing goal by eder, but france couldn't capitalize even though ronaldo came off and still, it was nani, quaresma and others who helped. but am so disappointed with france. what went wrong?
