Title: Ankle ligament injury-train or not?
Post by: Biglittleme on January 12, 2013, 07:45:40 pm
I hurt my ankle 3 months ago, and its still healing. I think it's nearly healed, because i didnt feel any moderate to serious pain
when i practiced for basketball and lifted weights for my vj. All i felt was slight soreness and tiredness, but i was fine with it.
But after training, i do feel my ankle's stressed, kinda sore and tired.
And right now im not sure weather i should rest again til my ankle gets healed or to train!
And because of this im wasting my valuable holiday time to train and i feel really frustrated.
So my question is, should i rest? If so, could i still train for bball and vj?
Or should i just keep going with more care?

Thank you!

Sounds like you might need to protect it from dynamic stuff for awhile longer. You could probably lift weights though. Go to a physio if you can and give them the full history of the injury and maybe they can help you determine what you can be doing right now and when you can return to full activity. The most important thing is to be patient with it. Don't stress out about not being able to train because if you come back too early you could cost yourself even more time.

I don't know the specifics of your injury. But my general recommendation is if you have any problem with knees or ankles - just stop playing basketball if you can. That includes basketball training which involves wear and tear to the injured areas. Still weight train, do exercises which are unaffected by your injury. Give it time. Then rehab properly when the time comes.

My ankle injury took way too long to heal last year because I insisted on doing a lot of things like playing basketball (competitive and pickup), sprinting and jumping. I did it by using tape, which helps train around the injury but I still think rest would have better.

Nah don't worry about it. Nothing you can do if you can't train the movement pattern in some way due to injury. You might be able to lift weights which will help your strength but don't stress, you're still young, plenty of time to make up for it.

Alright advice taken!
Thank you for the help yeah i guess i should just wait  :strong:

Oh and do you have any ways to recover injuries like mine faster? Would icing help after 3 months? Or like hotpacks or  anything else?

Rest is the most important thing. You can do every crazy naturopathic healing trick in the book but if you're not actively resting it, it won't heal. Icing is probably not going to do much if the swelling has gone down. Heat packs are good though, I think they helped a lot for me lately with a meniscus issue in terms of increasing blood flow. Try 3x15 mins a day for a few days and see if it feels better. Contrast baths are great as well.
