thumb sprain

Thumb got jammed 2 weeks ago, hurt kind of badly but kept on playing.  Since than it has not made a lot of progress since I continue to play on it wrapped up but it only hurts if i bend it the direction of the sprain.  I'm pretty sure I partially tore a ligament, but the question is will it heal on its own or will I need surgery?  I doubt it is a full tear b/c i can move it without any pain but the pain comes when i actually apply force to it aka bend it outward with other hand.

Don't want to see ortho b/c a visit is usually around $200.
