Title: Hello, new member trying to dunk again
Post by: Frank14 on September 17, 2012, 07:33:48 am
Just joined this site recently after lurking around for awhile.

I'm looking to increase my vertical so i can be able to dunk again. Last time I dunked (or from what I can remember) was when I was 22. So it's been about 15 years. I have tried a few times in the past to dunk again but something always stopped me. Going to give it my all this time for the next 12 weeks.

TRAINING:
Bill Starr's 5x5: MWF
VJB: TT
Let me know what you guys think.

STATS:
AGE: 37
HEIGHT: 6'5"
WEIGHT: 263
STANDING REACH: 97"
Now time for the  :uhhhfacepalm: part
STANDING VERTICAL JUMP: 16"
3 STEP JUMP: 19"
RUNNING VERTICAL: 22"
Lots of work to do!

I guess i am the most apropriate to  :welcome: you since i'm your age.

265lbs at 6'5'' ? Most probably there is no special training plan needed to improve your vert, you need to lose weight, unless you are one huge lean muscular beast.
Tell us a bit more. What is your body composition roughly? Are you training currently? If not when did you stop training? What is (was) the training scheme u are ( were most recently ) doing and what are your current weightroom numbers?

Also 97'' reach , you must have realy small hands, my reach 95 1/4'', standing at just 6' barefoot.

But damn , you'd make an awesome PF  ;D

Thanks VAG!

I struggled with my weight the last few years, going from 300+ the last 2 years.

My recent progress was from 301 to 250 this year. I gained a few pounds back.

Yes I'm currently training. I plan on starting a journal later today with all my lifts.

welcome. this will be an interesting journal to watch. i think vag is right, with your reach and history i bet you get it back pretty quick with some dedicated time in the gym and a solid diet.

on the other hand, you're practically a senior citizen, so you never know.  ;D

If you're a one-leg jumper you probably want to take care of your bodyfat :P and bodyweight

At 6'5 you probably need something like what, ~25 inches do dunk no problems on 10 feet.

read the original post, breh. his reach is 97", which does hardly seem possible. and i thought i had t-rex arms! but anyway, assuming it's true, 127-97=30. (assuming 127" touch is required for dunking. which, looking at my own hand, is about right.)

2.46 m reach at 6'5 is pretty much impossible. I don't believe it. I reach 2.41m with shoes on and I'm 6'0.

You're saying he reaches 2 inches higher than me?

It can't be.

You may have been a 1 foot jumper at 22 and a lighter BW but at 37 w/263lb BW those days are over unless you drop 30-40lbs first.

With everybody's comments I did my reach measurement again. After searching it turns out I was not doing it properly.

When I did it last week I put chalk on my hand and just put my arm straight up, 97".
Yesterday when I did it again I put my body flat against a wall and reached :uhhhfacepalm: this time, 99".

Sorry guys :(

Eh, you're getting closer to the truth. Did you really really extended your hand, like really pulling the arm out of the scapula/shoulder socket? (not literally, but you get the idea)

I guess you'd be good to fool NFL reach measurements though :P

No I didn't do it the way you describe it. You described it much better from what I read yesterday. So after doing it that way(really extending my hand) I got a measurement of 101". THANKS RAPTOR.

Oh no, I'm not trying to fool anyone. I already said I made a mistake in the above post. I joined here to learn and get advice. Everybody questioned my reach so I remeasured it to give more accurate stats. You guys were right I was wrong.

101 vs 97 = big difference.

256 cm reach is about right for your height. Nightfly here is 6'5 and has a reach of 253cm, or 100 inches.

Anyway, you need ~28-30 inches to dunk cleanly, if you have big hands you're most likely on the 28 inch side of that spectrum, if you can't palm the ball you're on the 30-32 inch side of it.

no offense was intended, for the record. we were just super confused. plus you should be thankful, means just that many fewer inches you need to dunk it again.  :highfive:

dropping those extra pounds would get you, if not most of the way, then at least a big chunk of the way there.

^^^Either I wrote that wrong or I didn't add some :) to it, but I meant it in a good way. Not offended at all I feel more embarrassed for messing up my reach stats :uhhhfacepalm:.I appreciate everyone's help! Feel free to give me advice/ criticism whenever I make a mistake. I'm here to listen and follow everyone's advice.
THANKS GUYS!!!! :D

I'll start a journal on Sunday or Monday.

Cool^^^

IMO it shouldn't take long to get where you want to get considering that you don't need to jump that high to dunk and being tall with long levers tends to amplify whatever strength you have.
