wtf?

This Self/Less movie is decent. Never cared to watch it but came in on an interesting scene, then restarted it. Only halfway through but, enjoying it so far.

Re-watched these recently:
No Country for Old Men:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/
evil ^^
Minority Report:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181689/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Absolutely love Minority Report.. some srs (well thought out) sci-fi. That scene where he changes his eyes.. 8|

Stamos should have been posting his Movie reviews in a thread like this, and linking in his journal. Would be a big thread.
-
I like reviews a lot. I am a sci-fi junkie myself, will try to contribute as much as i can.
-
Bumped on cowboys and aliens yesterday on TV so i watched it.
Not bad but nothing worthy either. Good performances by Craig and Ford. Just ok SFX. Cliched and shallow plot. Dull aliens. Olivia Wilde is.... annoyingly gorgeous.
5.5/10

Re-watched "Three Kings" & "Spy Game" yesterday.. both solid movies from nearly 20 years ago.
Three Kings:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120188/
Pretty cool concept -> steal gold that Iraq stole from Kuwait while their is a cease fire, but everything goes very very wrong.. Takes place during the first US->Iraq War. Has lots of twists and turns & it gets pretty intense. Really good movie.
Spy Game:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266987/
Could have been better but, still solid. Redford was in one of the most credible "hacking" movies of all time: "Sneakers".. Spy game is actually pretty similar, in that it seems more credible than not. I like how Redford's character in the film works people with only small bits of information
Interestingly, both movies are 7.1's on imdb. :ninja:

No Country for Old Men is pretty fantastic. For some reason I'm really drawn to the "Inhuman Antihero" characters: Neo from the Matrix, One eye from Valhalla Rising, Anton from NCfOM, Rambo, Mad Max, Lou from Nightcrawler. Most of those happen to be ridiculous fighters as well

Watch Army of Darkness if you're looking for 80s laughs. The original horror comedy

These movie channels play lots of CIA/FBI-ish movies.
Rewatched "Breach". Great movie. Based on a true story about an FBI agent who spied for Russia for 22 years.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401997/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hanssen
He is currently serving 15 consecutive life sentences at ADX Florence, a federal supermax prison near Florence, Colorado.
.. He was charged with selling U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and subsequently the Russian Federation for more than US$1.4 million in cash and diamonds over a 22-year period
Three years later, Hanssen transferred to the FBI's Soviet analytical unit, which was responsible for studying, identifying, and capturing Soviet spies and intelligence operatives in the United States.
Hanssen was recalled yet again to Washington in 1987. He was given the task of making a study of all known and rumored penetrations of the FBI in order to find the man who had betrayed Martynov and Motorin; this meant that he was looking for himself.
In 1990, Hanssen's brother-in-law, Mark Wauck, who was also an FBI employee, recommended to the Bureau that Hanssen be investigated for espionage;
Despite having shown his face, disclosed his code name, and revealed his FBI affiliation, Hanssen escaped arrest when the Bureau's investigation into the incident did not advance
that wiki is nuts.

any good sci fi movies besides the obv ones?
Primer, Gattaca....Sphere is OK.
-
ex machina is incredible.
-
I liked ex machina a lot too. But i thnk Her is even better. Both are excellent movies with a deep look on AI and on the 'what is consciousness?' and 'are ethic rules objective?' philosophical questions. But no sci-fi movie about AI will ever overcome Blade runner. Unless maybe..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner_2049 ????? ( i don't think so but the hype of a sequel 35 years later is too strong, big pitty Ridley Scott is not directing it ).
Best recent sci-fi that i saw was Arrival. Which is not that sci-fi after all if you see it, the.... exoskeleton of the movie is pure sci-fi but the essence of the movie is real and deep af. Solid acting, solid scenario, solid storytelling, mouth dropping cinematography/photography/editing/sound, this movie is a masterpiece really. 9/10.
-
Other -not too much marketed- sci-fi movies worth watching : Moon, Europa report, Sunshine, primer, source code, spring.
And a few that are a bit ( a big bit ) more.... heavy/deep/fucked up/experimental/artistic ones : upstream color, melancholia, the double, coherence, under the skin, another earth, in your eyes, lobster.
-
damn vag's sci-fi game is *tight*

This movie "eight below" came on.. saw that it had something to do with dogs, so left it on. It's actually decent. These dogs are amazing "actors".

As for sci-fi, one of my all time favorites is:
The Abyss

Moon was a pretty depressing but solid movie.....
Source code was a bit weak i think....
ex machina was ok.....
that dream movie was awesome with leanardo dicario .... forgot its name where
arrival was ok..... could have made the 1st half a bit shorter and the 2nd half stretched out longer.....
avatar seemed weaker and weaker as time went on.....
ahhhh Inception (the one with Leonardo).
great movie, but perhaps even greater sound track. Hans Zimmer absolutely destroyed that sound track.
Time.
-
Solaris is the best sci-fi film.
-
inception is a good plane movie. i've never seen solaris, throwing it on the list now. looks tight.
the best sci-fi movie experience of my life is unquestionably watching 2001: a space odyssey in a restored 70mm print in the beautiful old movie theater where i had my first real job, in high school. they had to expand the screen to show it. if you ever have a chance to watch 2001 in a theater, do it. it's awesome. don't even care what you think of the movie as a movie, the visuals and sound are just incredible.

sick af!!
Kubrick++
I've never seen a Kubrick film in a theatre... That would probably amplify the experience manyfold. Next level perspective.
-
LBSS , see the old Solaris ( 1976 ) not the 2002 version ( which is still good btw, so imagine the far better original ).
Other than that i agree 2001 is the best one, if one can name 'best' a movie between masterpieces.
Since we got into the classics : Brazil. Blade runner. Children of men. Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. last but not least : Metropolis ( 1927!!!!!!! ).
Bonus track : Cloud Atlas. It's a miss, the result did not blend/cook so well. But i totally agree with a critic i read back then , "one of the most ambitious films ever made". Even as a miss it is still very good and definitely a visual and sentimental treat. If it blended well, it would go in the GOAT/classics easy.

Forgot how intense "Crash" is..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375679/
good movie.
:/
-
saw these two tonight:
Pride and Glory:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482572/
surprisingly ruthless.. some crazy dirty cop stuff going on. really good movie.
The Take
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2368619/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Enjoyable.. some of the pickpocket scenes are really cool, especially the one in the bar midway through the movie. Decent story too - lots of "deception going on" at every level (from pick pocketing to terrorism).
The fight scenes really sucked though. They could have done so much better by making them more realistic.. This would have raised the movie up another notch.
-
dno.. the last movie I really wanted to watch in a theater, was "The Revenant".
-
Watched John Wick: Chapter 2 the other night-
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4425200/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Not as good as the first. More forced, bad dialogue, even worse Ruby Rose character (thank god she's mute). Action is second to none though. Just great fight choreo altogether.
Also, saw King Arthur with my son a couple of weeks back-
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1972591/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Seriously loved this and don't know why it hasn't been met with more love elsewhere. Having a story like this told by Guy Ritchie in classic snatch/lock stock style is great. I really hope the rest of films get the green light. Also, if you haven't heard it get onto the podcast Ritchie did with Rogan. I mean, I know Guy is a smart uh...guy, but he's next level when it comes to some of his history and archetypes and stuff. Well worth the investment.

I remember enjoying John Wick 1.. Saw 2 on Wednesday & didn't finish it :/ Good action but like you said, forced & weak dialogue. I got bored.
Oh, if they did a "The Equalizer" sequel i'd be interested.. Denzel.
On that note, I re-watched "Bourne Ultimatum" today... I forgot how good that was. It's hard to find a sequel that's better than the original IMHO.. For example:
Mission Impossible 1 (of the remakes with Tom Cruise) - man that was epic.. None of the others came close to the original.
Point Break - All copies of the sequel should be burned. The original is a "cult classic".
Predator - Some of the sequels were ok, but nothing like the original.
But then you have Bourne & Bourne Ultimatum .. Another one that comes to mind is Die Hard & Die Hard 3 with Jeremy Irons & Samuel Jackson. Actually Bad Boys 2 was pretty good also. I'm just naming some action movies that came to the top of my head.
I wanted to watch both Point Break & Mission Impossible 1 the other day.
There's some movies I can just watch all of the time:
- Heat
- Point Break
- Fight Club
- Mission Impossible
- Predator
- Crimson Tide
- Deja Vu
- Die Hard
- Die Hard 3
- The Departed
- Above The Rim
- Training Day
- Minority Report
- Se7en
- Rounders
dno just a few off the top of my head that I don't think i've ever gotten bored with. I left out tons of really good movies, but even with some great movies I left out, I can't watch them all the time.

Yeah I saw King Arthur too. As much as I love Guy Ritchie and lock stock+snatch are both phenomenal movies King Arthur was kinda average at best. His style just feels kind of forced for this particular movie. I thought the CGI was hella good and I loved it from a designers perspective but goddamn with that kind of budget you better make a damn masterpiece and the generic storyline and not a whole lot of depth to the characters is pretty boring imo. They were gonna make it into a trilogy???! jesus.
Will have to check out that podcast though ;D

Yeah I see where you're coming from. I liked when it broke into typical Ritchie style dialogue then reverted back to "normal style" after. From what I understand it was going to be an origin story style movie with more characters introduced after. Merlin, etc.
Definitely check out the podcast. It's worth the 2 hours.

Yeah I watched Wick 2 over 2 nights. Couldn't make it through in 1. The first one just seemed effortless. I'm assuming there'll be a third too which is kinda sad.
The Bourne movies definitely stand up. MI1 is great. I'm actually a fan of 2 as well. The action got if for me. Sounds like we're of a similar vintage though. So many great movies on that list. My only problem these days is I'm trending away from deep movies due to lack of time/brainpower. Where I would have watched Fight Club, Se7en, Training Day, etc a few years ago I would now pick something easy and fun.
My top movies I can watch at anytime are:
Point Break
White Men Can't Jump
Bad Boys 1 or 2
White Chicks
Dumb and Dumber
Me Myself and Irene
Anything Jackie Chan up to 2000 with selected titles after that
Any golden era Arnie or Sly

hah nice. I just realized my list doesn't have any comedy.. 8|
I contemplated putting Bad Boys 1 & 2, close - but couldn't. Absolutely love both of those though.. Not sure which of those I like better, they are both epic. 2 has some insane action scenes with some really slick filming. I think I give the edge to 1, but slightly.
Not the biggest fan of Jackie Chan but loved him in Rush Hour.. remember seeing 1 & 2 in the theater, lol fest.
I can't really think of a comedy MOVIE I could watch any time without being bored, damn... I'll have to think harder.
-
Just got done watching "Safe Room" (decent) .. Denzel is serious in action movies (and serious in any movie). Safe Room had some brutal fight scenes, especially the last one. They don't often ask Denzel to do any crazy kung fu stuff. They mostly have him just do some brutal, believable shit. hah.
I'll personally take "The Equalizer" over "John Wick" any day.. I think i'm just more of a Denzel fan. His acting in action movies seems more "real" to me. Always been a huge fan of his. Usually, he really makes me forget i'm watching a movie, his acting really draws you in.
As I mentioned earlier, one of my favorite movies of all time is Crimson Tide, with Denzel and Gene Hackman. Intense af.
It's funny.. The fight scenes in "Safe Room" vs "The Take" are just worlds apart. I guess I don't really enjoy the "karate" stuff, usually turns me off. I personally enjoy more realistic scenes.
-
john wick 1 was atrocious.... first 25% was good and suspenseful than he just started slaughtering everyone like duck hunt..... sure sure.... very suspenseful ......
C'mon man it's a revenge flick. There's suspense till someone important dies and then it's pure revenge fuelled violence.
-
Not the biggest fan of Jackie Chan but loved him in Rush Hour.. remember seeing 1 & 2 in the theater, lol fest.
I'm ah not sure we can be friends anymore...

Man you should at least check out Wheels on Meals (with subtitles if you can stand reading them). This is where I'd start and probably the one JC movie I watch the most. Drunken Master 2, Police Story 1, Project A, Dragons Forever and Miracles (Mr Canton and Lady Rose) are all great movies too and I had a hard time limiting the list.

I suppose I'm biased and it's probably not the general type of movie that most people would watch all the time.

I tried "on demanding" inception a week ago or so, but can't. lame.

Saw "Changing Lanes" again, pretty good movie.

Another brutal movie. Damn I don't watch anything uplifting.
-
Saw Despicable Me 3 with the kids on the weekend. Not sure who has kids here or if anyone has seen lots of these types of movies. Was pretty average though. Lots of fart jokes and a few bumping the head jokes which is great for the kids. Was missing the usual smart humour that's normally involved. I think I laughed out loud once in the 90 mins and I'm an easy target.
-
^ Regarding comedy, I was surprised the other day when I saw "Get Smart" .. was better than expected.
"The Arrival" just came on, haven't seen this in like 15 years.. decent sci-fi movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115571/
Also this is a pretty epic quote, early on in the movie:
Algorithms I trust, boolean logic I trust, beautiful women, they just mystify me.
-- Charlie Sheen
never picked up on that before... hah.
-
Caught "Don't Breathe" after the halfway point into the movie and it was a pretty sick suspense thriller...

Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.

btw, which Solaris was everyone talking about?
1972: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069293/
or
2002: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307479/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
1972 solaris, 8.2 imdb
2002 solaris, 6.2 imdb
I've only seen the 2012 version... not seeing how this is the most epic sci-fi movie of all time.. I'm pretty sure you guys are talking about the original :ninja: I'll have to check that out.
-
actually never saw "Good will Hunting" until today.. very solid.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/
RIP Robin Williams, great performance. :/

Great movie. My son started saying "how bout dem apples" the other day and I've got no idea where he got from and he certainly hasn't seen this.

Watched "Misconduct" on the weekend:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3658772/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Not a bad movie. Little weird in places, a couple of holes too but overall very watchable. Great cast too. I mean Hopkins and Pacino rarely miss.
-
the movie Inception....
Does anyone here actually understand the exact plot and logic of the movie?
I personally still don't get some parts of it.... such as wtf happened that cause Mal to think the real world was not real (how he locked the totem in a safe or something).... and how the son of that tycoon helped them break into his own subconscious....
Have not seen it. Is it worth my time to invest in it?
-
actually never saw "Good will Hunting" until today.. very solid.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/
RIP Robin Williams, great performance. :/
Great movie.
yea. Wish I would have seen it sooner. Matt Damon is such a beast, really great actor IMHO. "Rounders" is still my favorite performance of his.
My son started saying "how bout dem apples" the other day and I've got no idea where he got from and he certainly hasn't seen this.
haha! I've heard it in a bunch of other movies but not sure where a young kid would pick it up.

yea Inception is solid.. you have to pay attention though, it's a very weird plot.. but I think if you watch it "again", it gets better.. kind of like Deja Vu.
plus, it has Leo in it. :D cast is great overall.. and it's one of Zimmer's best soundtracks IMHO.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/
8.8 on IMDB ... that's really high. :o

"Time" is amazing IMHO.. so simple but perfect.
masterpiece soundtrack. :wowthatwasnutswtf:
I've been wanting to watch it recently .. so can't answer fast's question, as it's not fresh in my head.

Alright will watch. Now it goes on my list including but not limited to:
- Dark Knight Rises
- American Sniper
- The Hateful Eight
- Bone Tomahawk
- Sicaro
- actually pretty much any movie that has a dramatic streak to it.

^^ Sicario is really good.
Just watched Dark Knight Rises trailer to refresh my memory, oh the one with Bane.

dope trailer. My favorite batman movie is "The Dark Knight" with Heath Ledger (RIP).
Bale was an epic batman. He brought it into a "darker" more intense world, which I prefer in comic book/superhero movies.

Agreed on the darker superhero movies. It's how I remember the comics from my youth too.

watched 3/4 of the way GHOST IN A SHELL 2017
fell asleep though, great visuals, not sure about the plot though lol
this got me lol'n:
In the near future, Major Motoko Kusanagi (Scarlett Johansson)
has ok reviews. i'll watch it at some point. I never watched the anime/original stuff, but I heard it was great.

sometimes I wonder if not being excited about movies coming out, are a results of me just "getting older".. but I really don't think so. The sheer number of shitty remakes of originals that everyone once enjoyed, proves Hollywood is a wreck. I mean, look at "Chips" recently. I didn't see it, nor do I want to. But they turned some old classic into some goofy joke of a movie, it looks like. They definitely need to chill with the butchered remakes, that's all I know.
The "Point Break" remake is such an awful tragedy.
I just search 2017 movies, omg Baywatch remake, Power Rangers remake, so many trash remakes.
https://www.google.com/search?q=2017+movies&oq=2017+movies&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.1062j0j9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
That is a really shitty lineup.. wtf?
Most original movie in there is probably "Get Out". Heard that was good.
-
watched 'the accountant' .... give it 6/10.... which is a good rating by me.
fast and furious gets 3.3 / 10
accountant surprised me. was decent.
-
Wondering if Kong;Skull Island is worth watching, and also King Arthur.......
I liked King Arthur but I'm a huge Guy Ritchie fan and pretty easy to please movie wise. Not his best work but a solid effort.

apparently dunkirk is amazing.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2975590/)
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BYThjYzcyYzItNTVjNy00NDk0LTgwMWQtYjMwNmNlNWJhMzMyXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_.jpg)
Kinda torn.
Pros : Good atmosphere. Pretty dark aesthetics. Not hollow characters. Great SFX. Good main story idea. Interesting ending ( won't say more, spoiler alert ). Ensemble cast with good performances ( Jeremy Irons playing batman's butler, Fishburne playing the daily planer chief, Kostner appearing for 3 minutes, no wonder budget got up to 300M, lolwhat!).
Cons : Too long for its story ( watched the ultimate edition, 30 extra minutes bringing it to 3 hours, standard version already 153 minutes ). Main story/premise was good, but it kept getting... disoriented, many unnecessary plot twists and complications happening. Yet another batman character reboot, although this time it feels somewhat connected to Nolan's.
My verdict : Ok and maybe good for the batman/superman mythology fans, ok for a 3 hour action brainstorm, rather boring for someone who wants more.
My rating : 6/10

The Town was a pretty good movie, give it 7/10
the departed was ok, 6.5/10
your ratings officially suck. jk
departed is like 8/10 :D

ya I liked most of it, was surprised it got so much hate.. it lost me at the end with the enormous monster and the wonderwomen stuff out of basically nowhere. I liked pretty much everything up until that finale, just too over the top. Wish they would have stayed away from that.. Literally felt like it turned into a kids movie out of nowhere.
This superman with Lex Luthor was really good:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078346/
Gene Hackman kills it.. and the plot doesn't go crazy with massive CGI monsters etc.
Need to watch that again, but from what I recall, that movie was really good.
-
apparently dunkirk is amazing.
dunkirk trailer looks pretty intense/legit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-eMt3SrfFU
on a side note: not sure if anyone will be able to make movies about WWIII. would be nice if everyone just suddenly realized how stupid we are, out of nowhere.. kind of like "The Leftovers" but for a massive, deep introspection event.

Ant-Man (2015) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478970/)
Not bad at all.
It is "honey i shrunk the kids" with 2015 FX and adult humor. Liked the humor, it is always present.
Liked Paul Rudd. Michael Douglas is boss, i like him a lot always. Evangeline Lilly is hot in this movie, has a genuine sex appeal, although she doesn't provoke at all.
Story was fine but a little too cliched, you could see where it is heading at from the very beginning and it didn't deviate at all from that, but it served it pretty well. Some action sequences were very entertaining and original.
7/10.

Captain America: Civil War (2016) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3498820/)
Yes, it is super-hero-movies-catchup week.
This one is beast. It is not a captain america movie actually, it is more like Avengers 3.
Awesome visuals. Good plot, deviates from the typical superhero plot. Some good character development. Even some philosophical questioning. If something is bugging, it is the fact that Marvel decided to have her heroes fight each other at the same time that DC did the same. Look a few posts above, even the movie posters are the same. Marvel does it with much more grace/style/reasoning though.
Solid 8 , want to give more but 8.5 feels too much. Ok, 8.25. Really good movie!

Dark Tower
2/10
cons
super cringe-worthy generic plot, dialogue
cgi kinda meh
nothing interesting about the characters
books have some crazy atmosphere and environment defining, movie has neither of those things
pros
shooting spree + final battle were well choreographed (watch these on youtube to get movie highlights)
matthew mcconaughey is a badass
it's only 1hr 30 or something
totally forgettable, don't watch especially if you read the books

Watched 'Wonder Woman' because it got a 7.8 ranking on IMDB.
Definitely not worth that high, wasted my time.
I give it a 4.9/10.
C'mon it's as good as any of the other overblown superhero movies.
I didn't mind it but also watched it with my 5 year old daughter who couldn't be more happy that there's finally a female superhero. Now we just need Black Widow to get her own movie and we'll all be happy. Both me and my daughter.

anyone see "Gun Runners", running movie/doc?
