great thread :D
:headbang:

I could basically post here non-stop as I have tens of pictures like this (not me, just from facebook sources) but it gets really annoying to copy-paste tag as IMG etc etc etc...

where is the first pic?
-
Swiss. I almost moved there with my entire family when I was 5. I'd probably be living a state of life 423842357457345353 better than right now (back then it was communist Romania and my dad could've requested a political asilum in Swiss).
-
country's called switzerland in english, blu. but cool. why'd your dad decide not to apply for asylum?

Because I was 4-5 and my mom didn't have a job and if he were to stay there for a 1 or so we would be in trouble. He didn't apply for asilum and he blamed himself all his life for that wasted opportunity.
So now he divorced and moved to Canada (married a former teenage girlfriend to get there). And because of that, it's been HELL in my family ever since ~2005.

^Was there this August, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissani_Cave.
The colors are not exactly like this, the wiki pics are much more reaslistic. It is still very beautiful.

Yeah they apply hue and saturation filters over the pictures but hey, I like them more like this.

Dark sand cascades on Mars:
They might look like trees on Mars, but they're not. Groups of dark brown streaks have been photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on melting pinkish sand dunes covered with light frost. The above image was taken in 2008 April near the North Pole of Mars. At that time, dark sand on the interior of Martian sand dunes became more and more visible as the spring Sun melted the lighter carbon dioxide ice. When occurring near the top of a dune, dark sand may cascade down the dune leaving dark surface streaks -- streaks that might appear at first to be trees standing in front of the lighter regions, but cast no shadows. Objects about 25 centimeters across are resolved on this image spanning about one kilometer. Close ups of some parts of this image show billowing plumes indicating that the sand slides were occurring even while the image was being taken.

I've always been fascinated with it. When I was little there was a sentence in Romanian, when you wanted to say something is really far, you'd say "it's in Patagonia".
So I started to think "where is that" and I had an Earth globe and my dad showed me where it is, and then I was fantasizing about how is it over there... and I've always had that thing ever since then. It fascinates me to this day.

I wonder what's up with the human fascination with landscapes?
dno.. for me personally, I think it's just that i'm always (and always have been) surrounded by so much "noise". With these landscape photos, I imagine myself there and it feels "free" and relaxing. Living like a human without the pressures of society, tech, government, politics etc. dno ;f
plus they just look amazing.
-

I wonder what's up with the human fascination with landscapes?
I heard someone claim that men like unconquered (virgin) land for the same reason they like single women. The original is a bit more sexist but I modified it...
Maybe we see land that hasn't been claimed by any man and imagine coming up on that beauty for ourselves. For me a landscape or beach at night or any of these things just remind me of the size of things and how small I am in the world which is comforting...

i don't buy the first at all. i do buy the second, that is huge for me.

Yeah its crazy how comforting insignificance is for some people! But it really really is for me. I had a talk with a friend who said that things like this makes him depressed and nihlisitic and unable to achieve his goals because there is no point..
For me realizing that I dont matter also comes along with realizing that we all dont... Something I wasnt sure I would succeed at moves from daunting to "why not?".

Maybe it's a matter of being pre-programmed to recognize a great environment to live in - so when we see these vivid colors etc we recognize that as being an environment rich in nutrients/a place that increases your chances of living/reproducing, and makes you "naturally like it". I think that's the explanation.
Meanwhile:

Eh... Maybe but why do we see such beauty is barrenness? An image of a desert at night, the salt flats in Utah, even a moonscape or martian scape is so beautiful but really are not rich in nutrients (well perhaps we crave salt for the salt flats lol). I think humans are have been social enough that the most attractive area is one with friendly humans. I think I feel this as well - for me there is some comfort to being an metropolitan setting at night - the sounds of Rome or Manhattan outside of the window or walking along the streets of these cities gives a good feeling as I feel safe around all these humans (I think most humans are pretty nice and cool), while being alone in a rural landscape can be pretty scary as you can imagine a wild animal or some other danger coming your way with nobody to insulate you... Just my thoughts though on why things are beautiful which really is not that important because beauty is awesome for whatever reason!

whilst a couple of weeks relaxing on a beach in the maldives sounds amazing - i feel i would get quite bored once i was used to the perfect white sand and turqouise water!
i read somewhere recently that the maldives have the lowest 'highest point' of any country at around 2.5m.

This picture was taken at Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park. Apparently this happens every year but it's hard to catch a picture at just the right moment. Photographer Sangeeta Dey explained this on a post about her own picture on Facebook:
Every year for two weeks in February, the sun sets at a certain angle and illuminates the waterfall in luminescent orange and red, making it look like a fluid fire. I’ve met photographers who said that they have been coming for 11 years only to see this happen 2 or 3 times.

Just back from nearly three weeks trekking in the Himalays. Did a trek called the 'three passes' which takes you through the main Everest base camp trail valley (Everest superhighway full of people with lots of money being literally hand held to Basecamp which is actually very unintersting), and 3 valleys either side of that. Incredible trip, not sure if I should have made my first long distance trek this one as it'll be hard to beat. Pic shows Everest (black triangle to the left) and Lhotse to the right.

awesome man. yea you've been dropping some incredible photos lately.
Everest looks so "small" from this photo.. hah. I have no concept of mountains/climbing so, hard for me to conceptualize it. I would have never expected that you could see people climbing up it, but I guess you're pretty high already? lool. no idea. :D

Yeah so I was at around 5500m when I took this, so only 3000 to the top haha...I can't even imagine how ridiculous it would be to see Everest from sea level. The perspective is weird too, lhotse looks way bigger as it's nearer but is actually 400m shorter.
I didn't see anyone, but with a good pair of binoculars you would. Summit attempts are typically done through the night, so people going up to this viewpoint for sunrise could see headlights high on everest...kinda cool.
Altitude is so weird - there's just no air, even at 4-5000m, simple tasks have you breathless. I can't even imagine what it's like up above 8000m.
-
amazing photo, what a clear day! the air up that high is so intense, nothing in between you and the distance. i've never gone as high as 5500m, i think highest for me is 5200. super cool.
if you enjoyed, lmk if you want to climb a mountain in northern pakistan next year. trying to get a small group together to climb spantik, the "easiest" 7000m peak (i.e. very little to no technical climbing, it's basically a very, very high trek). yes srs.

sorry late reply - yeah it was an incredible experience and i definitely want to go higher. i've read of spantik....7k is VERY high though! i'd be very interested but unfortunately im just not going to have the funds/time to do something like this for a couple of years at least.
my plan is to get some techincal stuff done in the uk in winter and the alps and progress that way as its easy enough to just take a few days out to go in a little adventure. best of luck if you do get a team together to do that though, it would be an incredible experience.
