Hobbies & Interests

Of course we all train, but what other stuff do you guys do in your free time (not work or school)? Besides sports and training, what interests you?

Personally, I've recently been on an aeronautics jag and have dumped nearly $300 into textbooks, despite getting them used and at very good prices. I always loved planes when I was growing up and I'm getting back into them now. I'm actually drilling myself hard on materials science, aerodynamics, and general aircraft design and would like to have a workable ultralight plane within the next couple of weeks. Maybe I'll save up all year and try to build it in my garage next summer.

So, what are you guys up to?

Greyhounds, horse-riding.

I used to love riding in Iceland, Spain and Hungary - great riding country. Nowadays, I don't ride very much because I spend a lot of time with my aging 2 dogs.

wow wtf? you want to have a ultralight plane built within the next couple of weeks? RC plane or real plane (like a hang glider)?

i don't have many hobbies right now, but i used to have alot:
- basketball (8-23 years old)
- boxing (23-25 years old)
- computer programming & research (16-24 years old)... (my friend who i grew up programming with is making 100k a year living in manhatten, he's tried to get me a job but i somehow got clockwork orange'd from computer security... i get ill when I start programming again)
- playing with my yorkshire terrier (~13-26 years old)

my hobbies currently are:
- training (mostly for jumping, but im starting to sprint more)
- video editing
- being a bum (currently)
- forums <-- im addicted

i really like training more than anything.. and jumping high, and now running faster again.. so i mean i dno but i'd rather just become really good at it.. and then make nice videos of it..

peace

Bluegreyhound, greyhounds are my favorite type of dog. They're built for speed and look amazing.

And Andrew, I meant that I want a workable design in a few weeks. I won't have the money to start construction until next year or later. I want the thing to run on a 5.5 hp Honda lawnmower engine and have a flight time of at least 12 hours while still remaining within the category of "ultralight". ;D

i had a 5 hp engine on my gocart... if you can make a plane with that engine, that would be pretty ridiculous... i assume people have achieved this?

Some professor at MIT managed to make a human-powered airplane fly for 74 miles @ roughly .26 horsepower, so I assume I could get a plane airborne with a 5.5 hp engine. I'm running the math on a number of wing and airfoil designs and think I've hit on a winner.

The whole thing is going to be constructed of carbon fiber and lexan and the completed weight has to be under 254 lbs (empty). To make sure the lift is there, the craft will have a 50-60' wing span.

I love Ice Hokey although I don't play anymore.  I am helping out with the sharks this summer (for free but good experience).  When I get back from my honeymoon I am going to blog about the Sharks minicamp

I also Love MMA but haven't participated in years.  I am training my fiance's brother.  He's super skilled.  Started at 16 with me (I am much older).  Trained with Frank Shamrock.  I remember Tito Ortiz training with us when he was champ and this skinny little 160lb teenager was taking down the 230lb LHW Champion of the world at will.  His only loss competitively was to nick diaz.  He fell on hard times (had a kid) but is in a place now where he can really make a run for it.

So I guess my hobbies are all sports related.  Oh wait I like to cook. Don;t know why but it is very relaxing for me

Mine too. That's why I have two  ;D

They make very good indoor pets. It is a real pity that a lot of them don't get rehomed after they finish racing though. I really do enjoy watching their races as it is such a sight to behold at the elite/advanced levels. But the money side of the sport taints it and the accidents on the bends are quite horrific.
