Title: ADARQ.ORG Officially Endorses Nike Zoom Waffle Racers
Post by: adarqui on July 27, 2010, 07:19:20 pm

best.

shoes.

ever.

I do everything in these shoes now: casual, sprints, jog, plyos, lift, and even jump. If you decide to get a pair, take some time getting used to them, though performing max RVJ's in them might not be the best idea, since once you start jumping in these shoes you won't want to go back to basketball shoes. They are extremely light, very minimal shoes, without substantial "lateral support", but that's fine given that they have such a thin sole. This basically feels like you are barefoot, with a bit more ankle support. Another interesting aspect of these shoes is how "forefoot dominant" they make you: you get so much more spring off the ball of your foot in pretty much every movement, which is going to make sprints, jogging, plyos, jumps etc more powerful.

Anyway, here's a few pictures of the Nike Zoom Waffle Racer VI's ($29.99 USD on eastbay):

Not sure yet how the VII's feel, since I do not own a pair. Eventually I will update/modify this expressing my opinion on them.

peace

edit: DcJayhawk got his waffles recently, this is his first jump session.. Check the first half of the video (basketball shoes), then second half of the video (waffles).. HUUUUUUUGGGEEEEEEEEE difference.. pretty amazing:

The whole staff had these, everyone ended up with cuts on their Achilles.  Comfy shoes, meet the current minimalistic trend, but the cuts sucked.  We all ended up cutting off the back of the shoe  >:(  This made them wearable but they obviously failed a lot sooner than if we didn't modify them.

We all thought they had a ton of potential

weird.. i never had them dig into the achilles at all, even wearign very small socks.

maybe they got the feedback and made some sort of modification.

They probably modified the back a bit.  Guessing a softer material.  We loved them for a week and then thought "did they ever make anyone wear these?"

All of us had achilles cuts.  My wife was laughing saying "not you know what it is like to wear girl shoes"

May have to spend $30 and see if they are any better now

Hmm, Waffle Racer VI still 29.99 but they don't have my sizes 9.0-9.5...  I did notice they also have the Nike Zoom Waffle XC VII (I assume it should be just as good if not better; at quick glance it looks similar) also at 29.99 with several sizes available but again, not 9.0-9.5.  No luck for me.

Wow same thing I was thinking as I was reading the thread. I've had a pair since '04. I like doing speed and plyo stuff in them but they tore up my ankles too. Let me know if the new ones alleviate that problem.

What kind of material is the inner sole made of? Rubber or foam? I can't jump in rubber shoes, only foam.

not sure.. by feel, it feels hard like rubber.. but the heel of the shoe on the outside looks kind of foamish, so maybe the heel is foam and under that is rubber, then the rest of the sole is rubber.

dno

funny thing though, my zoom waffle racers are completely grinded down, 'slippery sole', like glass, yet i have been doing jumps/dunks fine in them.. I could never do that in basketball shoes I'd slip way more than I do in the waffles.. Plus i'd have a hole in them by now if they were basketball shoes. Soon they will probably rip though, I'm surprised this pair has lasted as long as they have.

also are the Nike Zoom Waffle XC VII the same as the nike zoom waffle racers VI? (or maybe more improved?)

pros- no weight at all
         comfortable
takes no time to break in
         cool laces

cons- at first it felt like my heel was gonna come out the back but that went away

ill make a video on saturday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WScNQuvC5U

check that grip im getting in them too, shit is nuts.. they definitely take time getting used too though, especially if your ankles are weaker from wearing basketball shoes for so long (even more so if you wear high tops).

only thing i dont like to do in them is squat, come up on my toes to much

after some reviewing.

when my legs were dead as fuck, in the shoes I'm getting .08 seconds higher in them than my bball shoes when i was fresh

ya they are hard to squat in because you actually sink in your heel instead of having the heel raised like in most shoes.

ya you'd have to get used to them for a while before being able to ball in them, who knows you might feel great in them right off the bat and be able to ball but i wouldn't do that right away.. i've played full court, 21's, etc in them and moved really good/felt great, but i'm very used to these shoes..

some new pairs of NZWR's have some "slippery" substance on the rubber, like to make it shinnier, just scrape em up a bit or walk around in em for a few days, gets rid of it.. lots of shoes have that though.

FYI, store.nike.com has a special promo additional 25% OFF until only JAN 2ND, 2011.   So you can get the Zoom Waffle VIII for 32.98 right now.  My favorite Nike Air Generate is only 29.98 with the discount.  I'm also gonna pickup T-Lite VIII for 23.23 and Air Monarch III for 37.48.  over $100=free shipping too.  123.67 for 4 shoes or 30.91 average.  not bad and should last me for a while.  :)  the only draw back is there is no color selection but who cares function over form!!

Just got the  Zoom Waffle XC VII, they're amazing! Really considering to use them as bball shoes as they should be great for my knees, problem is that I got them a little to big which makes me slide around when balling.
Does any body know where I could get a size 12?

awesome, glad you love em`.. if you had them a half size smaller, sounds like they would be perfect.

just be careful using them with basketball so soon, they do feel good but landings are more intense in them because of how little cushion they have.. just progress slowly in them, start off with basketball practice in them if you want, don't go right to games though.. i love playing in them, but i'm really adapted to using them so it's not an issue for me anymore.. for someone who just recently got them, it could definitely be more stressful, so just make sure you progress your usage of them, don't jump in head first.

dno i got 12's on eastbay.com

waffle racers weigh around 0.6oz per shoe..

yup they would, such as kobe's etc.. low top bball shoes would still offer more protection than waffle racers, but i personally only train in waffle racers.. thats the only shoe i feel like wearing, they feel great, but they take a while getting used to especially for basketball.. i wouldnt RECOMMEND them for basketball, even though i'd play in them.. my ankles have adapted to them, much stronger now.

no comparison between waffle racers & bball shoes in terms of "lightness + ankle mobiility + activating the gastrocs even more".. but shoes like kobe's are safer than waffle racers..

get used to low/mid top shoes if anything.. high tops are evil imo.

Is this a good weight lifting/ squatting shoe?  I'm not familiar with weight lifting shoes, but I normally squat barefoot.. I'm disliking barefoot though. Specially since no gym would allow it. Also need a good pair of jogging shoes for some random things that pop up

are these shoes = to weight lifting shoes?

they are hard to squat in that's why i elevate heels.. your heel sinks when wearing them, that's how they keep you on your toes.

That's what I saw at my local sporting goods store, I was hesitant to get it, because it was cross country though.  I don't know why I didn't at least try a pair on, that was stupid of me.  What do you think of the cross country versions of the waffle racers though?  These are apparently the newer cross country waffle racers:

They look extremely similar, but I don't wanna spend money on them if they're not like the vii's I have.  Maybe I'll wear my vii's to the store and compare how they feel if I have the time.

I love my waffle racer vii's, they're amazing.  They run a bit small though (or maybe I just got some fat feet) so I got them a size larger.  Usually I wear a size 11 dress shoe, and a size 12 waffle racer fits pretty snug.  They don't have much support, but I've gotten used to it.  The first 2-3 weeks my feet/shins were pretty sore, because I did most of my stuff in bball shoes, but I haven't had any problems in the past month or so.  For speed/plyo/conditioning work I give it two thumbs up, but probably won't play basketball in them.

the grip and bounce of the 8's right out of the box is incredible.

any other shoe suggestions? i think its best to get a shoe with harder cushioning, cause you can transfer power better through them than something soft. i have kobe 8's and kd vi's, and i prefer the kd's a lot more. they're nike zoom and are a lot stiffer than kobe lunarlon's and i really feel i can jump higher in them.
