with all of the political turmoil in Brazil, Zika, Parasites, health experts saying not to go etc, Rio 2016 could end up being pretty weird. I'm still curious to see if athletes end up not competing/attending, especially females.

I'm looking forward to the track and field (mainly just the sprints). The basketball should be good to watch as well. USA will win but it's always good to see other countries play. Hopefully the Australian team can sneak in for a medal.

i don't know man, lot of USA stars have backed out. the team is still going to be stacked but there won't be a lot of guys with olympic/international experience. could be a surprising tournament.

The depth of US basketball is phenomenal. The only thing the US might lack is a bit of chemistry compared to other teams, but talent wise I can't see any country coming close. Even teams like China that train and prepare months in advance for the Olympics tend to struggle- I watched the latest 3 game series of Australia's B team against China and China were very disappointing. Fundamentally they are solid, accurate shooters, disciplined etc. but as soon as Australia started applying full court pressure and hustling their guards they fell apart with turnovers etc. I do expect China to improve a lot between now and the Olympics though but if any team other than the US were to win it'd be a European team like Spain, Lithuania or Serbia. Australia has quite a few NBA players but they are all bench/role players and similar to the US they'll be lacking chemistry with nowhere near the same amount of talent.

ever since 2004, I just can't imagine USA having a lock on it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_United_States_men%27s_Olympic_basketball_team

that roster is pretty solid.

curious to see the roaster for 2016, coming out soon apparently.. the candidate list is decent but I think it's definitely more on the level of that 2004 team:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_United_States_men%27s_Olympic_basketball_team

and we all know, everyone wants USA's head in basketball. should be interesting.

I can't wait for T&F/oly lifting/basketball/futbol!@#

Yeah I don't see the US losing. Put KD, Klay and Carmelo on the perimeter (international distance not US) and it'll be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Gotta love Brazil. Would hate to be on the end of police raid over there though. Have heard they're brutal.

I wish it was just the warriors team playing in the olympics. That would be fun to watch.

Sally Pearson (Womens 100m Hurdle) has withdrawn from the Olympics as she has suffered a torn hamstring in training. I watched an interview on the news and she said that she was feeling no pain or niggles and the hamstring hadn't even been on her radar as being an issue. She had the best training block since her injury in Rome 2015 so obviously she's disappointed about it. Her aim now is the 2018 Commonwealth Games before retirement.

In other Womens Hurdles news I think Lolo Jones is another omission. I saw an article on facebook saying she hasn't raced since February and probably won't attend the US trials.

The US & Jamaican trials are going to be intense for track!

Yeah from what I heard of Pearson's lead up it sounded perfectly logical that she would tear something. Minor tear in calf that leads to a fall and a broken wrist and then she had some achillies tendon issues. She has struggled to get back to her best and has run sub par times. So they pull her out of that environment and try to get her up to speed in the shortest timeframe possible. Kind of a no brainer that something would happen like that.

At least they are already starting to arrest Isis members that are plotting attacks.  With all of the diseases and what not it'd be interesting to see who actually goes...I know I wouldn't.  I saw that Michael Phelps qualified I believe which is pretty dope(pun intended) and would be kick ass to see him compete.

I saw an article that interviewed a doctor in Brazil and the part of the water they will  be swimming in is basically swimming in shit.  He said you will be dodging shit and possibly dodging dead bodies and everyone was warned about not opening your mouth while you're in there.  I will try to find it, it's pretty hilarious

http://www.cbssports.com/olympics/news/report-athletes-at-rio-olympics-will-literally-be-swimming-in-human-crap/

it doesn't mention the dead bodies in it but that could have just been a funny sarcastic remark.

Imagine seeing the swimmers emerge with like someones old underwear stuck to their face.

this will be a weird olympics.. I would definitely be hesitant about going there and competing, if I was an olympian.. especially if I was in sailing etc, that water sounds disgusting. I don't remember brazil being such a wreck when it hosted the world cup.

Lol yeah, if they changed it from 4 to every year I think they'd sit out.  Unless you're a teen gymnast then you probably only get on average 2 of them

I was watching the tennis, I sympathise with djokovic, he is really good, but during the olympics, del potro who has been able to keep up with potro, i've seen hour matches between these two, which djokovic managed to win, but this time potro won.

But I was suprised to see serena williams with 5-6 double faults and lost, she looked upset and helpless as to why it was happening, dont know if because she lost first set she was losing will or energy or maybe something else.

but good to see rafa and murray and potro are still in it.

The gymnastics accident was very disturbing, especially when the guy was holding his legs while his lower brokel leg dangled.
I'm not going to post video, but you can find it on youtube.

Nijah Rahimov with the 214kg C&J in the 77kg class. Seriously WTF? I'm no expert in weightlifting but isn't he meant to stand still once he's got it overhead?

I think that the few seconds he was able to stay still is what the judges went by and the movements were small after he stayed still for a little while. But there have been moments when judges have given when it was a no lift, but to me that looked he stood still enough and arms locked, if it was big movements like no control then it would be different, he looked like he had it under control till later. just my 2 cents
