ya but downhill/overspeed adds intensity. the way he's using those bands, he's taking that intensity away. He's using those bands to decelerate.
I think it would be more useful in simply training the speed of a jump movement, don't think there's enough overload.

Do you guys remember gary's thread a few years back where he had some contraption which he swore taught his body to jump (gather/collect whatever) better so he was able to finally PR his jump to some important milestone as a result. I wonder if this is similar..

jumping with a hardon aint ez. props to ac.
Seriously i still hate that video so much. A bunch of still frames in a video. I honestly want to see the footage of him hanging onto the rim and falling off/posing. Just sounds so damn dangerous.
also, i'd actually give him some respect if he just came out and finally admitted bs'n everyone.. if he came out with actual footage and proved me (and so many others wrong), i'd easily apologize.
truth wins.

Was going thru Klokov's instagram and i came across a vid he put up of him trying a vertec, he got 36" btw. I imagine at his peak as an athlete and if he trained for the vertical leap he'd have like a 60" vertical or something? just found it interesting. dude fucks around and hits 36" smh. no link available, you'll have to follow him to see it, it's private

if by 60" you meant 40"? typo? lmfao!!
also, this is perhaps the worst post i've seen on this forum.. next time please provide a link, i want to see it without searching!! WTF!
:D
I imagine at Klokov's peak he might be able to hit a legit <= 42" or so.. much lower than the debated 60". He's probably alot lighter now (correct?) than when he competed (105kg after weight cutting), he also lifts & trains pretty hard still.
I'd say these NFL freaks have a better chance at setting "world records" in legit SVJ than pretty much any other type of athlete.. They are fast twitch monsters, sprint/accelerate all day, lift hard etc. NFL db's seem to be the perfect specimen for SVJ.. though some of the biggest SVJ numbers are from RB's, WR's and LB's.
awesome article:
http://www.cheatsheet.com/sports/what-are-the-highest-vertical-jumps-in-nfl-scouting-combine-history.html/?a=viewall
Lots of defensive backs (corners, safeties) etc.. That back pedaling & those quads. But still massive number (45) for Cameron Wake @ 45" being a line backer.
These dudes are insane.
If I had to choose between NFL vs Olympic Weightlifters in an SVJ competition, i'd go with NFL. I think the speed component is what gives them the edge. Oly Lifters are perhaps "slowed down" just enough to affect their SVJ technique in regards to reaching their peak potential. Meanwhile, these nfl guys are always just primed and ready to launch with speed/power. They lift heavy/hard but they aren't at all overly adapted to it & thus slowed down like an elite weightlifter/powerlifter would be.
I'd love to see SVJ competitions or something though, then we'd really see.. Athletes from different sports/disciplines competing for $$ with SVJ.
pc!
-
It's interesting how some of the biggest SVJ numbers are from RB's and WR's. I think it's obvious with LB's and DB's having great SVJ as most of them have brute strength. I would expect the RB's and WR's to have awesome RVJ as they are lighter and would have better re-activity and speed than their heavier NFL counterparts. I guess that shows just how much power to weight they have though considering their SVJ numbers.
-

i'd put RB's in there with DB's though .. RB's are crazy in the brute strength department and usually weigh lighter/are shorter than LB's. WR's i'm definitely surprised though. I'd suspect they'd struggle a bit more given their "length".
ya man these dudes are such freaks. I haven't been watching the NFL combine much over the last few years, but I do watch the highlight videos of the best performances.
A combine where athletes from various backgrounds competed in SVJ, RVJ, 40 yard dash, broad jump, pushups/dips, pullups, and fuck it, an 800m run.. would be sick. :D

soz, link added! He says he weighs 112kg, which is what his competing weight was, i think, i remember reading he would cut 5-8kg for comps to compete at 105
-
I agree that NFL players would win but they train for athleticism don't they? so it's not really a fair comparison cos they've been running and jumping for their sport. Klokov doesn't do those things, so for him to get a 36" it's a baseline value, maybe if he trained to jump and run it would be more fair. But i agree with you that football athletes are impressive athletes.
-
ahhh i remember now, his account is private. that actually makes more sense.
nice jump for 246 lb.
but ya i doubt he'd break 45" in his peak of oly lifting and jumping alot. there's definitely a possibility he could though.. 50+ tho??? nah.
-
RBs are bigger than DBs as a rule.
watching the russian animal dude made me think about how much MORE freaky the likes of byron jones, antonio brown, ezekiel elliott, ODB, etc. are.
that guy plays american football in russia. the bush leagues. NFL players are INSANELY athletic.

Not to take it offtopic but im fascinated by the Masaii jump. Any thoughts on adding it into one's training?
basically stiff leg pogo hops, one of the most highly recommended reactive exercises on this forum :D
pogos are incredible.. even more so than double leg bounds, MR tucks etc. They train "elastic qualities" obviously but i've always felt like they just improve triple extension better than any other exercise .. so if you want that "flick of the wrist" of a jump shot effect for your ankles, pogos are your exercise.
you basically try to keep your legs "locked" upon landing and flick yourself back up .. you can actually do this submaximally to start & it still provides a great training effect. It's easier to keep your legs locked when going submaximal. As you get higher, you'll have a little bit of bend upon landing which is fine. These Maasai jumpers allow more knee bend. If you notice they hardly have any arm swing either.
during my peak RVJ I felt like I could get near 30" or so off the ground on these, maybe even more .. here's a video of me doing them, but not at that level:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3ITzUbZzMk
here's two more videos of the same Maasai jumper:

very serious bounce..
-
I like those pogo jumps, I can get high with them too. But since it's a plyometric exercise, it does pain my shins because I don't have the strength requirements, which I heard was that you had to squat 1.5 x bw to be able to qualify to do plyometrics safely.
But it's really fun to do these as well, maybe it's the kenyan blood in me. :ninja:

just do them submax most of the time & occasionally do them near-max/hard to test it out, you'll be fine. don't need 1.5xBW squat strength, that's some BS :D
But it's really fun to do these as well, maybe it's the kenyan blood in me. :ninja:
important statement ^^ :) if they are fun to do and they feel good, do them.. probably. :ninja: but like you said you feel it in your shins, just don't go as hard.. you should be able to dial down the intensity and do them IF you wanted to.

is it just me or do vertecs often seem to be leaning a little bit? would make a big difference to measured heights if so, and be a pretty serious bug in the design.
-
is it just me or do vertecs often seem to be leaning a little bit? would make a big difference to measured heights if so, and be a pretty serious bug in the design.
serious flaw for sure .. once you put them at their "max height", lowest part of the silver bar at the 10' marking, it's really "flimsy" and that's when you see the bend/tilt. If you have it at 9'6", it's ok. If you raise it ABOVE 10', using your own custom marking, where it's nearly about to come out of the base piece, it's super flimsy.
so yup, definitely spot on about a flawed design... it doesn't hold up well at mostly ~10' usage .. i think that's why you see lots of videos with people having it at 9'6" and having people still do impressive vert tests on them, it's much more solid/straight at this measurement.
peace!

like...he is standing on the side of his shoes....
talk about.. FORCE he generated....
If i am not mistaken.. the first loading foot load and jump, the 2nd foot is the STOPPing and redirecting force from hori to vertical ....
with that said... his first loading foot is already... Turned and sort of stopping already...
anyway.. over analysis again.. but his deformed shoes really got my attention.

i'd refer to it more like range of motion. i mean it's not really his shoe deforming, it's more of his ankle everting. it's definitely some extreme eversion, crazy.
ZION deforms his shoe. haven't really seen people deform their shoe like ZION, lmao.
overanalysis would be, everything you said AND saying something like "if only my ankle did that in the plant, i'd jump much higher. i'm going to try and consciously roll my ankle in the plant to try and jump like that. ill stop doing normal sane/sensible stuff, and do ankle roll drills for weeks, and then slowly build back up into a full run up, making sure my ankle rolls with each successive step added".. or even worse, not doing it yourself, but trying to convince others they should do it. "you can't jump high because your ankle deformation isn't like this guy's <insert video here>".
:ninja:
anyway.. over analysis again.. but his deformed shoes really got my attention.
it's cool to analyze.
IMHO, over analysis is observing something & then thinking the way you do things is inadequate or incorrect, and then trying to implement the fairy tale observation.
it's fun & cool to point out things like this.. we've done it on the forum tons of times.
It'd be like analyzing Nadal's forehand, Federer's etc. It's cool to analyze the differences etc. But you don't see someone like Federer trying to acquire Nadal's forehand and visa versa etc.. Those guys have their form at this point. They may make some very small changes, but they aren't looking at another player and trying to mimic their technique/form etc. Instead, they mostly try and make their strengths stronger, and improve weaknesses, and play a ton of tennis. They rarely make huge sweeping changes. I can't think of anyone who has done that.
If elite athletes thought of their form/technique/abilities as inadequate, you'd see massive transformations more often - instead, you rarely find any. In basketball, you might say someone developed a jump shot. Usually it's more likely that they developed the confidence to shoot jump shots, not that they developed one so late in their life.
If developing such skills were easy, you'd see someone like Shaq learn to shoot free throws.. or anyone for that matter, who struggles.
I'm just throwing out some skill-sport examples, because you'd think learning to shoot a freethrow would be easy, since the athlete has complete control over the movement. It's not.
Going back to jumping, running, sprinting, etc: there's so many different styles that express similar elite performance.
edit: my "writing" is awful tonight. hope that makes sense.

Came to post that. Crazy.
I think people are crazy btw. Everyone is saying that he jumps higher in his dunk sessions...well, (IMO) YEA! When jumping to a vertec you only get half an arm swing. The downward motion definitely helps "propel" me. And he's probably more hype to dunk lol

ya vertec jumping is tricky. can fly into it, land on it etc, and the timing of the arm swing is a big part of it, especially if you jump LR-R or RL-L, or SLRVJ. I came in with that sideways LR plant and reached with my R arm, was def awkward sometimes and had some close calls.
he has some nasty dunk session jumps, on his max vert power dunks. easy to believe he's hit legit 50" at some point. :ibjumping:
