Dan Rather

A chill down the spine. A shake of the head in almost disbelief. These were - and continue to be - my reactions to the words of support that President Trump has issued on the dictator of arguably the most repressive and anti-democratic nation on Earth, North Korea.

The President has already shown a disturbing propensity to embrace authoritarians, even totalitarians, while he swings a wrecking ball to our alliances with the world's leading democracies. But this latest turn is one that blows past every caution light and should be ringing full alarms with anyone who cares about our republic. It should be clear to everyone by now that these words and actions show the values and morality of the man occupying the Oval Office. He wishes this nation would just shut up and salute him. He wishes he could weaponize the mechanics of justice to attack his foes and protect himself, his family, and anyone on whom he bestows favor (no matter how that favor is paid for in return). He seeks to silence the press and investigate individual reporters. He tears families away from children and stokes racial animosity.

There is no way to change him. But like a petulant child who constantly is told he can get his way, the fault lies as much with those who are allowing this behavior to happen unchecked.

All the President's supporters, particularly the leaders in Congress, must be urged to come down on the record about where they stand on all of this. And the rest of the nation needs to remind them and ourselves how un-American this behavior is.

Even as this chill wind howls I remind myself of one of my favorite words - steady. The mechanics of justice continue to turn. Mueller continues to investigate. The states push back. New leaders find their voice. This will be the chorus of democracy that can out-sing the voice of authoritarianism spewing from the White House.

One of my friends on FB, good post.

A chilling exchange at a White House press conference, defending the regime's enforcement of the immoral policy of separating children from their families at the southern US border, which according to the American Association of Pediatrics will cause the children "irreparable harm".

This checks box #2 in Lawrence Britt's thoughtfully concise list based on historical characteristics of the Early Warning Signs of Fascism:
1. ✓ Powerful and continuing nationalism
2. ✓ Disdain for human rights
3. ✓ Identification of enemies as a unifying cause
4. (✓) Supremacy of the military
5. ✓ Rampant sexism
6. Controlled mass media
7. ✓ Obsession with national security
8. (✓) Religion and government intertwined
9. ✓ Corporate power protected
10. ✓ Labor power suppressed
11. ✓ Disdain for intellectuals & the arts
12. ✓ Obsession with crime & punishment
13. ✓ Rampant cronyism & corruption
14. Fraudulent elections

/\ What is going on regarding trump's new policy of separating children from their parents at borders and placing them in cages and all this stuff. This is a new level of low from trump. What shocks me is that those orders are still carried out.

Aren't any laws passed by the president passed through congress before coming into action or anyone can appeal it.

Just crazy.

i mean, yesterday was kind of jaw dropping.

Quote
“I have President Putin, he just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. . . . I have confidence in both parties.”

McCain: "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/shameful-treasonous-disgrace-lawmakers-pundits-react-trump-s-joint-news-n891736

^^ that article goes hard, lots of quotes.

Gingrich: "the most serious mistake of his presidency."

also, just wanted to see what the national review was writing:

https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/07/donald-trump-vladimir-putin-press-conference-disgrace/

finally, regardless of whether or not one agrees w/ Brennan, everyone should agree that it's absolutely mind blowing that a former CIA chief (and others) would get to the level of calling the current president treasonous.

Voting opens for Pakistan general election; millions flock to polls amid tight security

Millions of registered voters are flocking to polling stations across the country to cast their vote in Pakistan’s 11th general election. According to DawnNewsTV, the first vote has already been cast — in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Charsadda.

The battle is set to come down to three parties: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

While polling stations officially opened for voting at 8am, enthusiastic citizens queued up outside their respective stations as early as 7am.

July 25 was earlier declared a public holiday by the ECP, as an effort to increase voter participation.

At 371,388, a record number of troops have been deployed at polling stations at the ECP’s request to maintain law and order and take action against harassment.

that's one soldier deployed for every 285 voters. there have been a few attacks in the weeks leading up to today, mainly in the western provinces, but targeted at politicians themselves. fingers crossed for a peaceful day.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.
