- run 46:59, 7.49 km
not as cold as i expected since there wasn't much wind to speak of. woke with a headache, again, but it didn't seem as bad and then run helped a little. what a pain. proud of myself for dragging myself out the door.

that turned into a two-day headache. unpleasant, was incapacitated for most of the day today, basically lay on the bed staring at the wall or with my eyes closed. feeling a bit better now but still fragile. the running group is going to meet up for a light run together tomorrow morning, since the track is under 8 inches of snow, but i'm TBD about joining. would be most likely my coldest-ever run (24/-5, windchill 14/-10).

woke up feeling sick, hasn't gotten any better throughout the day. if i feel better before dark then i'll get out for a little snow run. if not, rest day.

saturday

- ski x 5.5 hours
cold and windy, windchill was around -9/-23 (air temp ~10/-12). but we layered up and it snowed on the way up - the drive was difficult, especially after dark - so we were fine until the wind really picked up in the afternoon and our faces started to get cold through the balaclavas. still, it was a really fun day.

today

morning:
- ski x 3 hours
conditions perfect: air temp was ~13/-10 and the wind had died all the way down. clear blue skies. and for whatever reason the mountain was not at all busy, we never waited more than 5-6 minutes for a lift. the snow was still nice, no ice which is the great bane of east coast skiing (the relevant subreddit is r/icecoast).

evening:
- jump rope
- mobility
- climb x 45 mins
was pretty dead but figured i'd join my wife at the gym anyway. i stuck to easy climbs for the most part and stopped when my biceps started telling me to cut it out.

yesterday

- run 36:30, 6.53 km

going skiing this weekend, leaving at lunch time. if i have time, i'll do a short run later this morning.

111
- treadmill run x 20 mins @ 9:40 pace

- climb x 2 hours
my friend josh came. he's not as strong a climber so we focused on the easier stuff. it was fun, i like to teach and i'm enough better than he is that i actually have some useful feedback and advice to give. got him to the top of his first purple route, which he was happy about.

- push up x 11,10

happy new year!

- track intervals
-- warm up
-- 800+800+1200+1200+800+800 at between 5k and 10k pace
-- cool down
averaged 4:10 on the first two 800s, 4:11 and 4:04 on the 1200s, and then 3:56 and 3:46 on the final two 800s. still calibrating, i didn't want to go out too hard and i'm pleased that i did both the final two reps in under 20:00 5k pace. as i get fitter and more used to workouts at different paces i'll get more consistent.

just found out that my target event, a 10 miler at the end of april, has been replaced by a half marathon. now i have to decide if i go ahead with it or bail and do something else. probably just go ahead with it, i guess? transitions even more smoothly into training for an ultra if i'm working long runs up to 16+ miles. still, i'm annoyed and kind of let down, i really liked doing that race.

115
- run 1:36:44, 16.50 km
let myself not focus on keeping HR under 130, just keeping pace very comfortable. HR averaged 134 and pace 5:52. felt great, like something i could eventually use as a target race pace for a moderately hilly first 50k. also did strides at the end (4 x ~one block).

116
- treadmill run x 15 min @ 9:40 pace

- squat 225 x 5,5,5
ok

- climb x 90 mins
pretty good! solved the orange one i'd been unable to do the last couple times. started to make progress on a blue one in the overhanging area, which is the kind of climbing that seems most natural to me (common for dudes, i think).

- paused push up x 10,10,10

- treadmill tempo
-- 10 mins @ 9:40/mile pace
-- 2 x (5 mins @ 6:58, 2 mins rest)
-- 8 mins progressive cool down

wanted to make sure to get at least four miles in today to keep weekly mileage headed in a positive direction. wore my watch on the treadmill, it's quite accurate around ~9:40/mile (~6:00/km) pace but not faster.

had a pretty brutal headache yesterday. not quite full-blow migraine, or at least not as bad as my migraines have gotten in the past, but bad enough to nauseate and make me stay in bed until basically 1 PM. not sure what that was about.

- run 52:14, 8.64 km
the patagonia R1 air fleece is one of the most useful garments i've ever owned. warm and breathable, absolutely perfect as an outer layer for activity when it's around freezing (barring heavy wind, probably warm enough on its own for anything down to the upper teens fahrenheit/-6 to -9 celsius), thin enough to wear easily under any jacket. the hood fits tightly so i don't even need to wear a hat if i don't want to. i'm tempted to buy another one, without the hood, to rotate in. thank you, yves chouinard.

- run 50:16, 8.24 km
bought a pair of asics novablast 4s after succumbing to marketing. i regret to inform you that they felt great.

- track workout
-- warm up
-- 4 x 1 km in descending pace (4:30, 4:15, 4:01, 3:49) w/ 2 min rest
-- cool down
great workout with the track club! feels so damn good to get up early and run.

120
- run 1:39:27, 15.85 km
whoops, at least a km longer than i meant to go. felt fine, though. cold, once the sun went down my hands got pretty chilly. HR averaged 128, per watch, which is good.
