You were right back when I was suggesting the Texas Method for you - you seem to milk all kinds of gains on this protocol. I might go on with it after I stall at TM.

Dunking in a game doesn't compare in any way with dunking in a dunk contest or whatever. No comparison. I would take a powerful in-game dunk over a dunk contest dunk any day because it's unplanned, you don't know it's going to happen, it's athletic and it's awe-inspiring.

By the way - forget what I write around here, I'm not in the right mental state to think about anything. Sorry about that.

Maybe Raptor knows something that we don't, but he needs to explain it in his post, not just take his opinion/theory and write it out as fact. The muscle spindles, which are responsible for activating the stretch shortening cycle, respond to both changes in muscle length AND the rate/speed of change in length. Regardless of how flexible you are statically, I would think it would still kick in during a rapid eccentric contraction. Like in a depth jump, your knees don't bend much to stretch the quadriceps, it's the rate/speed of that stretch that causes the reflex.

I think that's a good point. I don't have any evidence for my statement other than what should logically occur using my subjective experience.

Because there's a loss of stretch reflex when you're too flexible - you don't benefit from it anymore. If you're still explosive it's because you're strong, not because you still benefit from the stretch reflex at the level of people that aren't as flexible as you. But this applies in something like ballet or whatever.

Too much flexibility can be bad for the stretch reflex.

Also, considering your history and your build, and what you seem to be good at - getting stronger sounds like the logical thing to do. You won't get too much out of the run-up anyway, I would say. So the SVJ Kingfish route sounds the most logical way for you.

So a 2x squat for a short guy. Nothing THAT impressive about it.

Shawn is right. For me, the arbitrary moment when you're going to be happy with your strength and explosiveness is when you'll be able to do 5 explosive reps with your 2x squat. At that point you can focus almost exclusively on jumping. So your focus should be to get to that 5 reps x 2xBW squat ability in terms of strength, and practice good form jumping in terms of movement efficiency.

By the way - if you'd be able to learn full cleans and full snatches you might benefit from them - not only are they hip dominant and explosive, but they also put you in the position to absorb eccentric forces in the catch, which translate into absorbing forces in the jump plant, forces you're not currently accustomed to.
