Update on toes after orthopedic surgeon visit this morning:

Both big toes are arthritic, although the left is more pronounced. The joints are malformed and cartilege has worn away, although it's not completely gone. But my stride is pretty normal-looking, even barefoot. Eventually, I'll need surgery, with the preference being for joint replacement ( :o ) over fusing the bones together. But the doctor said that because the state of replacements for toes is not as advanced as those for knees or hips (which each have about a 95% success rate), it'd be best to wait a while to see if procedures improve over the next 10-15 years. In the meantime, he told me to take Aleve for 10 days or so (3-4 times the max amount on the bottle, confirming my suspicion that dose recommendations on OTC painkillers are a complete joke) and see if that improves the inflammation or pain any. He also told me to get some more arch support, to prevent overpronation (okay, will think about it, although I'm worried about my feet getting even weaker than they already are), and to get a shoe with a rocker bottom (over my dead body).

Glass half-empty: I will need surgery and in the meantime am stuck with overly stiff, occasionally painful big toes.
Glass half-full: I can hold off on the surgery for a while and can continue to go about my business until then without worrying that this will get any worse.

damn that sucks ass, how did that arthritis even happen, it's just because of how the joints formed as you grew up? are you prone to having more of your joints becoming arthritic? i mean, is there an increased risk because of this toe shit?

1 November 2010

Bball game.

Endurance = bad , i get tired after ~5 mins and i can't breath and request sub at ~8 mins :(

not good..

Quote
Vert = good , did only 1 jump in very fatigued state at half time and got 8'' above , but the rim was slightly bent so it's 32,5'' and not 33''. Nevertheless , touching wrist at legit indoor court rim feels damn good!

very good..

conclusion: neutral.

any plans on improving your overall fitness? I think you could make some nice improvements with not much work, ie some quick interval sprints (gassers/suicides) after a session, some jump rope before or after upper body, or something.. I think you could definitely improve fitness a bit more by focusing on it a bit before or after those UB sessions, perfect place to incorporate.

check his reply, very nice.. i've been doing something similar, it's working great for me. Now that I actually care about physique, I should see some ridiculous gains under my current diet.

"I've posted elsewhere on this forum the results of my tried consensus way (higher carb, moderate to low fat) for gaining muscle. To gain an appreciable amount of muscle, I had to gain fat. Then I had to spend time taking off the fat while hoping to retain the muscle I put on. This method lies somewhere between "ok" and "madness," in my opinion. I suspect there's a superior alternative."

I've eaten less than maintenance, and gained muscle - while losing fat. Thought that qualified for repeating.

Over the past few weeks, I've made it my daily goal to consume 8 whole eggs and 3oz of dark chocolate. I hit that goal about 5 days a week. I've had my suspicions about the ultra fast digesting whey proteins in the past (they're absorbed too fast; the body doesn't know what to do so it converts the proteins to sugar. Proteins don't do much good serving as sugar), and am forgoing having them now. I'm content with the slower digesting wheys and am even mixing them with even slower digesting casein containing cottage cheese post workout and...better sit down...even mixing in some fat. My post workout meal is more reminiscent of mother's milk (the stuff we were meant to grow on). Over the course of these past four weeks, I've been eating lower carbs in an effort to lose fat; muscle gain wasn't my current concern. I've added in the extra eggs, extra dark chocolate, and the change to the post workout meal (which is sometimes a breakfast, lunch, or pre workout meal, too). I've eaten less than maintenance, and gained muscle - while losing fat. I've never been more vascular.

shit, Jan 1 2011 is right around the corner........ remember I said I was going to hit my head on the rim by Jan 1, 2011? ok well i'm kind of far off from that right now, let's assume the highest i've gotten as of recent is 38, i'm 9" off from hitting 47" which would be hitting my head on the rim.. 9" may seem like a shitload, which it is, but i'm still going to make a push for it.

so, I think my max-effort jump sessions will consist mostly of ME jumps, not much dunks.. I need to work on summoning all of that power via the strength of my will, and I need to make EVERY jump count, no "shitty jumps" because of bad lobs, this means 100% quality during my jump sessions. I'm also pondering the use of shock, once again, though I don't really have a 30" box, so I may just do shock from 18" (4x10 eventually, starting out at 4x5). I may incorporate that pretty soon, so that I am going full force 4x10 come december 1.

I'm going to keep my current lifting routine that i'm on, i'm having alot of fun with it, and i'm on the right track considering i'm back to incorporating high volume BW lunging, which is freaking my legs out hardcore. I just may in fact have enough pop come Jan 1 to get very close to my goal if I just put everything together and make the push.

I need to also get in a few jumps @ the LA fitness because I felt very springy in there on that wood floor, I had some crazy jumps that day, and I'm jumping higher now on the outdoor courts.. so I may be getting a little extra pop off an indoor surface with my zoom waffles, have to look into that and test it out.

For december, I need to phase in 4x5 DJ's, and get completely adapted to 400-800 BW lunges + moderate volume squatting, so that for December, it's not tapping into my jumping at all, then I can drop frequency on squat/lunge and get a bit more recovery, while increasing 4x5 DJ sessions to 4x10. That should give me alot of power by Jan 1.

All of that requires I don't get injured, so, have to make sure not do anything stupid either.

ok ok just was on my mind before i sleep

peace

Yup , that jump , its insanely high , ~42'' or more , legit , word!

DAMN , i just checked his account, he removed all the old vids! That's a real loss to the dunking youtube community!!! :( :( :(

NOT kidding , those vids and comment battles were epic...

ya that's a bummer, loved the comments.. but really i got to give him some major props on that jump heh, it's disgusting.. mid-forearm with a nice bend is pretty sick, definitely around 42 i agree. regardless, can't disagree with the human-vertec aka vag.

I don't like barbell shrugs either. I prefer db shrugs or plate shrugs (for the plates with handles).

ya i just get much more trap with arms at my sides, my db's will be even further away from my body too, because i'll have to use my 25 lb plates which are pretty thick, so arms being out further to the side will stress the traps even further.

i'll still do barbell shrugs occasionally, just to manhandle some barbell weight, but i like db's.. If I start deadlifting more then my traps would get hit hard regardless, i have a pretty beast DL if I train it.. gonna keep it light though on DL.

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: 3x8 or 3x5?

Oh and about the hypertrophy stuff: if you look at Shannon Brown, he's having massive posterior chain muscle mass... yet he jumps 45+ off one leg. You can see he voluntarily generates the force to get up there.

what do you mean yet? massive hamstring muscle is going to aid in dlrvj/slrvj, but it's also a sign that shannon brown simply is explosive & carries a bit more muscle than the average person, in the right places, im sure his glutes and quads are equally massive, similar to what you would see in most sprinters.
