whats the 1008 lb squatter's vert?  ccj says it 60+ standing

He's wearing a squat suit, depth was shallow, rep took too long, did not finish the rep himself.

so what you are saying is, 65" standing?

Ive seen that pic long time ago and i thought it was fake!

Damn...  :o

that shit is so fucking amazing.. those guys are beast.

The danger I was talking about is from athletes trying to wait too long to put the feet down, reaching out further than they are capable, and landing on "locked" knees.  There are many cases of this and Ive seen several at combines myself during broad jump tests.

The reason your squat hurts your knees is because your using so much forward knee travel.  In a properly performed, below paralell squat, the glutes feel like they almost completely take over until about midway up.  You are essentially performing a hip thrust up to that point if you think about it.  Your squatting technique wont permit you to drop the hips low enough below your kneecaps to experience this. When you go lower it requires even more forward knee travel, hence your increased pain.  Ive already tried to explain to you that this "pretty" squat you have in your head that a 4 foot 5  Chinese olympic lifter wearing weightlifting shoes performs is not going to be the optimal squatting position for taller, longer limbed guys like us.  Long legs, short torso, you are going to have to create some forward lean to squat correctly. Its really that simple, long torso/short legs- can stay very upright, short torso/long legs- need some forward lean.  Neither is better and neither is worse.  Whats bad is when a long leg/short torso lifter like you tries to emulate a perfectly upright torso position, causing crazy forward knee travel, or a long torso/short leg lifter tries to lean forward too much causing too much low back activity.  Their torso is a longer lever than ours, they have to keep it upright.

yup great post.. I wish I had more video of eddie squatting. Raptor just tries to be someone he is not, sometimes, kind of like CCJ wanting to be SquatDR. I think it is a very unhealthy mindset, and leads to all types of injuries. For example, I would have raptor just half squatting (comfortably) and working hard on unilaterals. It's the same thing I'd have eddie do, shit, he didn't even get to half squat usually, it was more somewhere between half and quarter. He got so strong though it was insane. His legs were insanely long and his torso was short, so why waste years trying to get him to squat like Zhang Guozheng, like you said.. Too many coaches adopt this mindset.

I'll give a quick analogy.. In high school, I literally was ridiculou at basketball, but I had a major beef with the varsity coach. I was more of a point guard who could create a ton. I could always get to the hoop, to dish, get fouled, or put up some buckets. But my varsity coach RAPED MY MIND by having the team run some Princeton offense: "3 passes before any shot!". So, i'd intuitively just take advantage of a gap in defense and get to the lane etc, creating a play/opportunity, then i'd get benched.................................... "IT'S 3 PASSES BEFORE ANY SHOT!"... So needless to say, my brain got completely fucked and wrecked my passion for basketball at the time. I just couldn't understand that shit.. On JV I didn't start, but I was 6th man off the bench with a few 20 point games and shit, so I mean I wasn't garbage.. The JV coach had a way different style than varsity.. I was allowed to create on JV.. So here I am thinking varsity will be great, everyone thinking i'm going to play, and instead, I end up being forced into positions that are so foreign to me that it wrecked my love for the game.. Now, some people might be saying, "well ya dude that's league level basketball, deal with it", which is totally fine, that's why I quit and played street and got into boxing etc.

That one experience changed the entire course of my life.. if you try and confine me, I adapt... if you try and "get me to squat deep when it is unnatural for me", I adapt.. I don't give a fuck who is telling me to squat deep, my body is not meant for it.. I will not waste my time doing something that doesn't take advantage of my natural leverages or abilities..... we all have unique abilities that introduce little changes into how things should actually be done, rather than just following the norm.

ok sorry for the rant, but that's kind of how I see the whole "do it like this" mindset in s&c.. sure, we need to train with good form, but that form will change based on how we are built, so small changes are necessary.. why box yourself in trying to become something you aren't? Most high jumpers half or quarter squat, they don't really give a shit about ATG :)

This is one thing that I think Vern Gambetta gets right. His thing is basically that box jumps are fine and all cause you can get a max jump onto them with the impact of landing, work on pure explosiveness and whatever. But if you go much above 30", even for the best jumpers, you're just practicing/demonstrating core strength, hip mobility and balance on the landing. And there are much better ways to do all of those things.

ya i'm fine with box jumps used as an assistance exercise to vert, you can minimize landings from VERT-ADA-HEIGHT by landing on the box.. they are also good for hip flexors.. i'd say you can go above 30" though depending on your vert.. I mean if your vert is nasty high, you could use 42" boxes etc.. but the thing is, you have to land without forcing yourself into the most insane hip mobility contortionist possible.

take dallas robinson for example:

that stupid loser took down his training mix.. bleh.. anyway he was jumping onto 42" boxes, landing very decent in a half squat position.. his SVJ is 42".

as opposed to, crossfit box jumping "landing":

if you get fouled, it doesnt count as a Field goal attempt.

thanks lbss :)

Yep, for some reason I momentarily forgot the rules of basketball when posting that comment. Chalk it up to a brain fart.

I think Nabokov's point was that his brain was completely incapable of appreciating the structure. It just had absolutely no effect on him whatsoever.

he was a tard then.

you know what's cool, people whose brains have the auditory and visual centers that "share" the same pathways.. they end up hearing sounds/instruments and seeing colors/splashes of colors/objects.. shit is like a non-stop adobe after effects video.. i can see how it would get annoying but for the most part, that sounds pretty badass.

Hey, that's great! Do you think this has influenced yourself in terms of taste of music or appreciation of the arts?

well yeah, but not in some kind of structured appreciative way.. I don't just put music on, listen to it, and appreciate all of the subtleties about it. I have my own style I guess, I like to listen to classical when I'm training, walking, etc.

I think it helped me gain a respect for alot of music that my generation doesn't normally have any interest in, that's for sure.. My dad is big into jazz but I'm more into blues. I don't like brass instruments for the most part, I really hate saxophones with a passion, I think they turn every song into some kind of elevator music love song. Trumpets I can stand if it's something like miles davis, but it has to go hard.

My favorite instrument has to be violin.. I am obsessed with violin.. Most of my classical songs on my ipod are heavily violin based. I don't really know the names to any songs, hardly any rap songs either, I just listen to stuff and know it by feel.. When I played piano, I memorized each song I had to play and never read the music after that, so I guess that's how that works. My dad had taught me piano for years growing up until about 12 or so, but you know how that goes when you're a kid that wants to go hoop it up rather than play piano, didn't end good, he finally let me just do my own thing.

He'd be surprised though if he knew how much I listen to classical and stuff like that.. he just thinks I listen to rap heh.. He doesn't have much of an appreciation for rap, which is odd, considering most people into "the arts" lack an appreciation for jazz, especially the older generations, like my grandpa etc.. Rap is a child of jazz, and plenty of rap is still directly rooted in jazz.

If you're into jazz, this is actually a CD made for his friend who was killed by a bouncer, some bass guitar legend Jaco Pastorius:

http://www.adarq.org/forum/music-and-sheet/jazz/

It's just piano, drums, and bass guitar... some of it hits pretty hard it's cool.. mostly all improvised i guess too, even though they had a general idea of what they were going to play..

I always wondered what my life would have been like growing up in a really musical environment... I only acquired a serious interest in music in my mid to late teens unfortunately...

damn, perhaps though you might have developed less of a taste had you not found it for yourself! you never know..

maybe I will start a violin thread eventually, and put some really intense violin solos in there :D

WTF , freak of nature!
I read in youtube comments that he hasnt even lifted?
And how about that jump in the beginning , he takes just one step and gets heels to chest height. That would be 45+ without even trying! Shit...

ya man.. it leaves you with a sick feeling in your stomach like "what if", you know? what if he stuck to it and had proper guidance..

that jump is so ridiculous hehe.

165 lb before workout, I ate ALOT :F

7/25/2010

bw = 161
soreness = glutes still
aches/injuries = felt pretty good

workout:
- nice warmup, warmup sprints
- ~30 yard sprints x 8
-- ^^ focused on a few different things.. think i went a bit faster.. i focused on how i ran when I got chased by a bunch of gang members when I was young.. i smoked my friend who was a beast in sprinting/jumping in grade 6.. level-7'd but I've always remembered how I ran that day, so I'm going to work on it a bit and see if it has any effect.
-- ^^ hamstrings were toast using this technique change..

- C1: 135 squat singles : 6 x 1
- C1: 20 lb bar jump squat onto 16" box, go lower than comfortable on descent,  land as stiff legged as possible : 6 x 2

- natural GHR: 3 x 5 partials, then 3 x 2 (low as i can go then back up, then try to descend all the way down eccentric)

done.. hamstrings feel pretty toastEd.

peace

Vid of GHR!!

ya i will eventually, it's pretty pathetic right now though.

Chased by gangmembers. Thats the difference in our lives. Most dangerous thing I ever ran from was the rain.

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: Measurements
« on: July 26, 2010, 03:56:28 am »
What do you use to measure? And do you do it yourself? Flexed or unflexed?

i use some tape measurer, not a metal ribbon one, some flexible ribbon one.. works well. you could use some kind of string, then measure that (the string will conform nice to the circumference).

measure unflexed :D
