what's that about registering with british athletics? the open meets at lee valley cost six pounds per event. i don't know where you are in the UK but it's worth traveling to race. you'll never be in as good shape as you hope to be, and that's fine! i did two races on my recent trip in crap conditions because there's no replacement, even as a training tool, for competition against other people. could i have done better if i'd trained more, hadn't flown 7,000 miles one way and then 7,000 miles another way, been able to keep running consistently on the road, etc.? yes. doesn't matter, still beyond happy with myself for at least trying.

you can do it!

a propos of what i just wrote in seifullaah's journal: i'm most likely moving to london next year. once there i will be joining an athletics club ASAP.

when are you gonna race, man? like, find an open meet and race? for example: https://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/outdoors/athletics-centre/competition-entry-forms/sprints-meetings/

it's about measurement, but even more than that it's about learning. at the meets i went to a few years ago, i impressed exactly no one with my times. but i chatted to a couple of fast people who were impressed simply that i'd decided to try to get faster as an adult, entirely on my own, and test myself. that's what you're doing, too. if i'd decided to keep trying to get faster at sprinting, instead of realizing that sprinting was one in a long line tangents distracting me away from jumping, i'd have followed up with a couple of those people. hobbyists love sharing their hobby.

- run 11.05 km in 1:00:40

niiiice and easy, 5:29 average pace. felt good. getting occasional shooting pains in my calves and feet now, though, which is not great. did some SMR and stretching, hope it just goes away.

redbull 400 (uphill), looks hard. lol.

https://www.redbull.com/us-en/events/red-bull-400-international

that looks absolutely horrible. looked at a couple race results and it seems to take at least 3 minutes for the male winners to finish. i wonder how elite athletes would do. bet 800m runners would dominate.

yeah but you can't fly right into iten, it's little. you fly to NBO and then get there overland probably.

what i'm saying is, doooo iiiit.

- run 2 km; tempo 2 km [4:03,4:09]; run 4 km

- stretch

total distance 8.07 km, total time 40:38

first time doing anything faster than 5:00 since the races in may, i'm pretty sure. helps that it was sunny all day so things dried up a bit. didn't want to push too hard.

“It's a struggle to go out and get that extra 5, 6 miles in,” he says. “But the minute you start cutting it short, then that's the minute where it's going to be easier in a race to give in.”

alot of truth to that. cutting it short can sometimes be good, but can also help you cut it short in a race. have to be careful with it.

true. i remember back in college reading a blog entry from one of the all-time great college ultimate players, josh ziperstein. (he was an elite club player too but then he became a doctor and stopped playing.) it was a list of tips for his teammates and included a lot of good advice (e.g. when flying to a tournament, get up and walk around the cabin at least once an hour and while you're up drink a cup of water.) but the thing that stuck with me the most was, to paraphrase, never give up on a rep. if you're running 40s or cone drills or 400s or whatever, finish hard, because ingraining that mentality in practice makes it easier to run through in games without having to think about it.

Toward the end of our dive, when they were taking out the lights and whatnot, my comms mask started acting up. I was having a really hard time communicating. I couldn’t hear what was going on, and I was getting sprayed in the face with saltwater every now and then. It was just really uncomfortable. So when my dive buddy signaled, “Hey I’m going up,” and I’m like, “Perfect.”

As he was going up and I was about to go up, I was kneeling on my knees on the sandy bottom. It wasn’t that deep at all. I could stand. Suddenly I felt really hard pressure on my left calf, and I was like, “That’s weird.” I thought, “That’s my fin.”And suddenly I started getting dragged backwards, and was like, “Nope, that’s not a fin.”

bad. ass.

oh man how did no one post the secret US military bases in here!

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/28/fitness-tracking-app-gives-away-location-of-secret-us-army-bases

Quote
Sensitive information about the location and staffing of military bases and spy outposts around the world has been revealed by a fitness tracking company.

The details were released by Strava in a data visualisation map that shows all the activity tracked by users of its app, which allows people to record their exercise and share it with others.

...

However, over the weekend military analysts noticed that the map is also detailed enough that it potentially gives away extremely sensitive information about a subset of Strava users: military personnel on active service.

Nathan Ruser, an analyst with the Institute for United Conflict Analysts, first noted the lapse. The heatmap “looks very pretty” he wrote, but is “not amazing for Op-Sec” – short for operational security. “US Bases are clearly identifiable and mappable.”

“If soldiers use the app like normal people do, by turning it on tracking when they go to do exercise, it could be especially dangerous,” Ruser added, highlighting one particular track that “looks like it logs a regular jogging route.”

“In Syria, known coalition (ie US) bases light up the night,” writes analyst Tobias Schneider. “Some light markers over known Russian positions, no notable colouring for Iranian bases … A lot of people are going to have to sit through lectures come Monday morning.”
