162 lb.

wanted to record some shadow boxing.. i did.. sucked tho man only had a smoothie, thought i'd be fine, but my work rate was sucking.. felt some fatigue.. so im uploading rounds 4/5 i did back to back rounds 1/2, 3, then 4/5, and 6.. recorded 4/5, someone told me to record later rounds.

so when thats done ill upload/link.

shadow boxing:
- 6 rounds
- speed felt fine at first but was fatiguing more than usual

half squat, close stance:
- 135 x 30, 30, 50
- took everything.. legs were shaking crazy on each set.. 50 was brutal, i was tired around 15, arms were so numb by the end.. i let go of the bar and couldnt move my arms for ten seconds, just completely numb/buzzing.

slow relaxed jog on midfoot:
- 2.6 miles: 23 minutes
- LEFT CALF KILLING me to death.. i wanted to relaxed jog like 3.9 miles or more.. calf just keeps tightening up so bad.. right one is fine.

pullups: 2x 15
pushups: 2x25

slow jog on midfoot:
- 1.3 miles: 10 minutes
- calf completely gone

pullups: 1x15
pushups: 1x25


ok so slow relaxed jogging is probably out of the question.. i should just stick to 1.3 mile runs all out, with rest in between.. to let my calf recover a bit, and not kill it too much with too much distance all in one go.

All warm up sets felt easy , way below parallel, form was perfect , but somehow the max set felt too heavy , form was average and depth was barely paralel , maybe 1'' above.
Not bad for my 1st ever max attempt on free squats though , still learning the mechanics.

BULGARIAN SPLIT SQUAT : 3x8 , 2x18lbs barbells
CALF RAISES : 3x15 110lbs
INCLINE BENCH PRESS : 3x5 110lbs , 30sec rest , 1x15 88lbs
SEATED ROWS: 3x6 132lbs , 30 sec rest , 1x15 100lbs

1.3 (CORRECTED : re-measured.. it was 7:12 in 1.3 miles i ran 2 years ago, i forgot it was 1.3 not 1.5 my bad heh) mile run:
- 8:24.79 <-- good shit.. couldnt even breathe through my damn nose, it was clogged.. fucking sucked i damn near passed out when i was done.

shadow boxing:
- only 3 rounds, left shoulder was somehow fatigued from the run it was clicking, didn't like it

half squat, close stance:
- 135 x 42 <- was dead on rep 5, just kept pushing.. i could have kept going im such a pussy.. arms/hands were completely numb after.

pullups:
- BW x 15

- changed back into a 1 leg jumper from 2 leg. (When I was young I was a 1 leg jumper)

When I'm fresh I'm really fast now, but I'm less able to deal with sore muscles. I also open my hips much better than I used to, and transition better etc... When I'm sore I really have a hard time pushing the effort.

interesting about the single leg jumping.. what do you mean 'less able to deal with sore muscles" ?

ya man i need to get some fights in.. ive never had any official fights, only hard sparring.. i need to get some real fights on film, then go form there ;d ... i doubt ill even do any sparring before i do amateurs either, i really dont think i need it.. i know what to expect in there and i know what shape i have to be in.. i do need to toughen up my hands a bit and hit a bag though, or they wont be ready to smash face without increasing injury risk.

i plan on getting into better condition than i left off 2 years ago.. high rep squatting plus faster road work (mid foot, not heel toe) should help me do it.. i dont think im going to jump rope much, i think i can actually obtain faster hand speed without it.. i think it is IIa'n my shoulders.. looking back, i think jumping rope actually staled my shoulders out.. my hand speed is ridiculous right now and im putting in no work jumping rope.. i need to just shadow box/heavy bag (eventually heavy bag) for that, not endless rotations on a rope.

to get to better condition than be, i need:
- max mile runs under 4:40
- ability to do insane high rep squatting
- get down to ~5-6% body fat again
- not train every day, more like every other day, but make these days count 2x.

peace man, hopefully ill have a shadow boxing vid up in 3 weeks or so.. i want to get more ripped for it, for fun. heh


i feel incomplete.. hitting 27, realizing dunking is kind of boring, and not doing what i do best, conditioning/fighting.. i am completely natural at boxing so there's really nothing going against me other than improving my skill level even more.. which is awesome, cause all of my other hobbies involve me fighting my genetics.. im wasting my talent.. its bothering me.

Cool man.  Personally when I boxed I felt jump rope and all the other repetitive boxing type work did nothing but make me slower. The only thing that made me faster was practicing combos for speed in a fresh state separate from the repetitive round by round stuff you do in the boxing gym.  Regarding strength training that was actually a situation where Isos were really beneficial because they kept my muscles fresh. I did a lot of gymnastic training Iso variations and only minimal leg work. Grip and forearm work seemed to have a very positive effect on punching power.  High rep squats in conjunction with boxing training would personally crush my nervous system but you might be able to handle it. Also interval work was a complete waste of time.  It ran me into the ground and didn't do shit for my conditioning.  I don't understand these idiots  who don't understand that combat sports are already as "intervalistic" as hell.  I would just do low intensity road work and go to the gym and train/spar.

Anyway, I experiemented with a lot of different stuff so holler at me if you ever want any ideas.  Don't worry about getting too old either.  At 32 I thought I was too old but now it's 4 years later and I still haven't lost a thing related to boxing other than desire. ;D

ya, im realizing how i trained before was not optimal.. way too much jump rope, it would fatigue my shoulders too much, even though i didn't feel it much.. way too much volume every day.. im going to approach this from more of a sprint based perspective, making sure all my sessions that need be 100%, are actually 100%.

i definitely plan on doing grip work, i have to strengthen my hands again.. they are weak naturally, unfortunately.. weak hands for sure.

i don't get the obsession with circuit intervals either.. i do plan on splitting my road work into intervals though.. working on my 400's, 1-1.5 mile, 5k times.. im going to be 'sprinting' them, not longer running heel to toe, rather, running mid foot, which is a huge change for me.. i know for sure i cant do any long slow road work running this way yet, the faster i go the better.. running slow on mid foot seems to kill my calfs/achilles even more.. im going to be able to push myself on these distances alot better now, because im taking advantage of my reactivity, and im able to hit higher speeds.. jogging heel to toe is horrible, but i never knew the difference growing up, i think thats why running mid foot for distance kills me so much, i just didnt develop properly.

the high rep squats seem to be fine so far.. i mean, the 5x20 was the hardest for sure.. that has given me some soreness.. but overall, i feel fine performing them.. i want to create INSANE lactic acid tolerance, to levels ive never had.. and i figure high rep squatting is one of the best ways to do it - the adaptations seem to occur very fast under high rep squatting.. plus, ive never had the mental strength or grit to get to 135 x 100, not even 135 x 50.. im going to break some mental barriers improving with this exercise, thats for sure.. and i will cut it out before i do any amateur events etc.. the whole goal here is to achieve something that is beyond my mental 'strength' currently.. if 40 is hard, and i get to 100, that is going to do alot for me, i know it for sure.

ill probably go right into amateur event, i doubt ill spar before.. have to be careful with my hand yet still do some competitions.

Haha, I hit a similar rut right in the middle of my track season this year. Sprinting is so hard, and I'm so bad at it. At TWhite's suggestion, I'm now training for bobsled, I guess.

Boxing sounds sweet, man. And you do seem to be a natural at conditioning. 5 sets of 20 reps on squats has got to be one of the craziest things you've ever done. Then again, this is you we're talking about... ;)

one minute rest in between makes it more badass..

ya it was only 135 lb. though.. heh.. when its like 185+ i'll be happy with it.

im only slightly sore too so thats good.

i don't know if its really a rut though, i just realized dunking is boring.. what am i training so hard for just to throw down the same type of dunk all the time.. hehe, i don't even like basketball.. i don't enjoy playing it really..

I liked the podcast. A couple things I disagree with:

If you do the lunge correctly, it is just as hard as the glute ham. I actually like the glute ham in comparison - the stretching of the hip flexor is pretty bad in the lunge. Agreed that the wall squat is pretty easy - but keeping a neutral spine is the real benefit, and can make it hard for someone who sits all the time.

If you do the isos correctly you really shouldn't feel much 'burn'. You feel 'stretch' but the terrible burn goes away after a few sessions. If you are pulling down the whole time, you don't feel like you did anything at the end of the set. When I was doing them wrong, I would go like 4 on the right lunge (burning like crazy) then maybe 2:20 on the left lunge, and would fail with the back quad. Fixing the pulling action, my times are close to even one after another.

I've found the best way to do the isos (lunge and pushup) is to use unstable platforms. That way you know if you are pulling down hard enough, and are close to the correct position - otherwise they slide. In the lunge I have two platforms which I spread out throughout the set, keeping the hips square.

Last thing: Once you are 5 minutes for a ton of sessions, start adding weight. The motions are so low impact that it's easy to add strength - they don't tear up connect tissue or anything - so conceivably you could add a lot of strength over time. Schroeder claimed he could do a 5 minute pushup with 200 pounds.

damn 5 minutes and feel like you did nothin? crazy.. thats impressive.

Haven't checked your log in a while man, but that's awesome you're getting back into boxing. With your newfound strength and explosiveness you're gonna be a beast. Any idea what weight class you'll be in?

shadow boxing, full force:
- 6 rounds, felt great.. speed = legit tonight.. i think the one day on one day off approach is going to work excellent for me in terms of keeping my hand speed at peak levels at all times.. i think i shadow boxed way too much every day when i was boxing two years ago.. kind of like running 100m sprints full out every day - not a good idea.

crazy half squat session:
- 135 lb x 20 reps, 1 minute rest in between, for 5 sets
- last set was hell..

neutral grip pullups:
- 17.5

pushups:
- dead, 25




edit: left achilles is killing me from the jog i did in the morning.. feels fucked.. i think all that jumping ive done has really tightened it bigtime.. i mean ive been complaining in my journal for the last year about my left achilles, the jogging is really bringing it out.. hopefully it'll adapt koz i really need to run some sick times.
