Cool. Have a nice day.

I guess Turkoglu is a high class player, right? Well, good luck buying his t-shirts then.

You do realize, vag, that we live in 2013 and not 2008, right? RIGHT? Also, you do realize he's like 6'10, right? RIGHT? :gtfo:

On the dunk vs Battie he jumped what, 24 inches? And in the 2nd he just dunked on a weaker guy than him. Granted, he had to search quite a bit to find one so props to him for that.

It was to be expected. He's one of the most powerful, athletic and low bodyfat athletes in the NBA. He was bound to be caught.

Ok so I was at the gym today and squatted in my AdiPowers... did both high bar and low bar squats.

The low bar squats were cool as usual but MAN, the high bar squats? Are you kidding me? They were HORRENDOUS! Absolutely UGLY. I kinda moved around front and back and had my back bend and all that jazz while doing them, being used to do low bar hip driven squats for the last 3 years.

102.5 kg were pretty much a hell to rep 5 times.

I did 102.5x5 2 sets of high bar and 2 sets of low bar (4 total sets). The low bar 2 sets were a joke :P

But the high bar sets were crazy hard.

What would you advise me to do? Switch to high bar, start with a low weight (say 70-80 kg) and work my way up, working on improving my movement efficiency and getting better at the high bar squat

OR

Continue with the low bar squat but making sure I get lower and I really use the legs while squatting.

It's really weird because I chose to use the low bar squat at Lance's advice back in the day, and since I was so quad dominant it made sense to do it. My knee still kinda feels weird doing the high bar squat now but maybe if I work on improving the movement efficiency...

Thanks!

Yeah that's really, really great. I've seen it some months ago.

Yeah... I'm at ~2.3xBW in the deadlift and I'd say I have "decent" strength.

3353
I don't mean to be a jerk but... if a weakass like me can do 330x4 (that was a long time ago) at 180 lbs... then 315x7 is not really strong :P

I could probably do ~352x7 right now, but I'd pass out.

3354
Pulled 315lbs for 7 reps today, finally getting close to being able to call myself strong.

What do you mean? Deadlifts?

3355
but a soft surface is both 1) safer and 2) will give you better results because of the stiffness you will build up on the soft surface.

I read on maximum-maximorum.com, a site that doesn't work anymore, that training on soft surfaces promotes systemic stiffness, while training on hard surfaces promotes systemic compliance. I don't remember exactly what the text/observations were.

3356
Yup. I'm actually waiting for a call to go pick up my AdiStars right now as I'm typing this. I also wear an "artizanal" knee sleeve when I squat and jump and pretty much do anything "athletic".

I'll have to see if I can front squat with the o-lifting shoes. I can't maintain the bar on my shoulders because I can't keep the elbows high, only pointing down. I probably have the tendency to rotate forward too, but maybe with the o-lifting shoes that's less of an issue.

But why do you say the ceiling for the low bar squat is lower in terms of carryover than the high bar squat? I think defining a style of squat just by low and high bar is way too simple... you can still do leg-driven low bar squats like a high bar squat and get plenty of carryover IMO, unless you squatmorning it like some of the Rippetoe folks.

3357
When I was comparing the styles of jump I was actually reffering to this:

Quote
if you want to talk about movement patterns, kingfish's SVJ's are more like a low-bar squat. he leans way over. so do i, although i don't get nearly as high. look:
vs comparing your SQUAT styles. I was comparing your JUMPING styles.

From what I understand, you were comparing your squat styles lower in your post (and what you quoted).

The revelance of ball in hand is that he can't armswing his arms from back to forward-up like you can... that might alter the way he jumps (maybe with the ball in hand he has more weight in front of him, loading the quads more like in a front squat).

3358
If all you care about is two-leg jumping exclusively, then you don't care about hamstring strength other than their function as the antagonists of the quads (having strong hams will allow the quads to express power better).

I think you can get away doing a "leg dominant" low bar squat though... so a similar movement pattern to a high bar squat. Also, a deep low bar squat.

Also, a successful (two leg) jumper is going to be more quad dominant than a sprinter.

You're also more hip dominant than Kingfish. You have your head forward and hips pushed more backwards at 0:31, with your knees barely going over the toes in the deep squat position and also having the heels elevated from the floor, whereas Kingfish has his knees go WAY over the toes and head more "back" and back more vertical in his video at 0:19, with his heels planted on the ground (they do seem to be just 1 inch or so raised off the floor).

Granted, he jumps with a ball in hand and you're not, but still, something to think about. Quadnation™

What about people with no choice but to squat low bar, like me, that have knee issues? Even attempting 2 reps of high bar squats is a ticket to go home with knee pain (but I have whatever stuff moving in my right knee).

Yeah watch that Joel Smith video I posted here (here = http://www.adarq.org/pics-videos-links/knee-vs-hip-dominance-by-joel-smith/ )... you might get a few ideas.
