only problem i have with "Adult Onset Athlete" is that it seems meant to mock a really good impulse, which is to try to get fit after, often, a lifetime of being sedentary. i'm cool with basically anything that gets people motivated and working hard. i certainly have views about what would be more or less optimal for different people, but the specifics are far less important than just putting in some kind of work. people who aren't fit are often self-conscious about it, especially around people who are. gyms can be intimidating. jumping into something new can be intimidating. positive reinforcement is everything IME.

that said, coges, i'm with you: it'd be better for people to run a few 5ks until they've improved a fair amount, then move up to 10k, etc., and probably never to run a marathon. if people ask me, that's what i say. (on the other hand, "happy to finish" would not describe my virginity-losing experience, because i think it took me about 45 seconds, hahaha :'().

body-shaming people is gross and mean.

also, maxent, what would be an acceptable marathon time for a marathon-running love interest? if this woman has run more than one then she's probably pretty fit and committed. if you're attracted mainly to super competitive people, then i can see why you'd care. but if not, what's the difference if she runs them in 3 or 4 hours, or if she's improving her times? not everyone is crazy competitive or motivated to improve and improve.

try taking a false step before you jump, that is, start a half-step back with the plant foot. more closely mimics what will happen when you add more steps. or were you not adding one on purpose?

It is indeed depressing to anyone who respects your truly exceptional talents to see you of late apparently spending a great deal of time on shallow, negative polemics that contribute almost nothing in the way of real knowledge or deep truths to the subject matter they deal with. Instead of utilizing your major talents in the difficult business of discovering new viewpoints, and new understanding and techniques, you make a spectacle of yourself indulging your minor talent for innuendo and derogation. There are occasions on which it is desirable for a person with an outstanding reputation to devote some effort to pointing ·out the flaws ina significant proposal. But it is fatuous to waste time attacking one so weak that it can be demolished by high school debating tactics that avoid serious consideration of fundamental issues and deal only in hostile innuendoes, unsubstantiated arrogant opinions, and trivial nitpicking.

that's definitely overboard when you look at it from the perspective that LBSS does respect you, your consistency, your hard work etc.. (as you basically mentioned in your last reply to him). when I read his comment I personally didn't perceive it as an insult - seemed more directed towards your tendency to flip the script, go off on tangents, focus on things that many perceive to be insignificant (certain bodyweight goals etc).. stuff like that.

no training the last couple days because gym has been closed for jewish holidays (happy new year, everyone) and i've been super busy. turns out there is a LOT to do when you're preparing to move 7,000 miles away. not least starting to say goodbye to people.

did have a booty call last night with a really hot woman. fun times, she turned out to be a biter. ended up with a gnarly bruise on my neck, haha.

question: on the napa vid he seems to be wearing a bunch of different numbers. is it normal in rugby to change your number frequently? in most pro sports here it's unusual for stars to change number even when they switch teams, to the point where it's notable when it happens.

following a coach is good, it just seems weird that he would prescribe 5x30m@50% as a workout, even for recovery. that should take just a minute or two, it's barely a warm up.

does your coach have an overall plan that he's shared with you? and does it have a target, such as a meet, toward which you're working? it might help to see everything you're doing in the context of a months-long plan that has a time-bound goal.

Hey man I'm sorry if I've been hurting your feelings and being a jerk. You are, in fact, inspirational to me in your commitment and consistency. You also baffle me, and lately my response to that bafflement has taken the form of little one-liners instead of actually trying to engage with you. Engaging with you can be frustrating because you're so stubborn. But that's not a good enough reason to be a hater, so, apologies. I'll save the snark for mattyg if he ever comes back and tries to start defending Trump again.

The last comment, about people trying to compare themselves to you being foolish, was meant as a reflection of your unpredictability and iconoclasm, not as an insult.
