yep, reminds me of something i think jalen rose was saying the other day. carmelo anthony just had knee surgery, which he'd known about and been planning for months, just a few days after throwing down an alley-oop from lebron in the all-star game. that dude's knee was BUSTED -- nobody gets knee surgery for funsies. but being able to do crazy shit through pain and injury is (part of) what it means to be an elite athlete.

speaking of the NFL combine, this dude broke the broad jump record and tied the vertical record. 44.5". that is two-handed-windmill-from-a-standstill territory.

don't let the injury get you down! keep doing upper body lifting -- seated OHP could be good, and beach work. i bet that'll help, i always feel more swole and awesome after i do curls and tricep kickbacks, even though i know my arms are nothing to write home about. and keep up the pull ups, obviously. you can also do core stuff, russian twists, bw reverse hypers or supermans, any kind of crunch variation. and band pull aparts. get the juices flowing, be doing SOMETHING. it'll help immediately and down the line.

but good call to stay off it and let it heal. and i hear you on being crestfallen, that's really the perfect word for that feeling. in the immortal words of bill clinton, i feel your pain.

how's your ankle? are you able to walk without limping? can you put weight on it when you stand on both feet? how's the ROM? swelling?

yeah, def get an opinion from another podiatrist or orthopedist or PT.

suggestion: when you do, describe everything to date as you did in that email, but don't go as far as the self-diagnosis. that is, don't say, "i know it's a problem with my arches." might prejudice what that person tells you, and you might be wrong. say something like, "i have an idea about what the problem is but wanted to get an expert opinion."

if what they tell you is unhelpful, it'd have been unhelpful anyway.

hamstrings sore but have gotten better over the course of the day.

have nearly full ROM back in dorsiflexion, plantar flexion still lacking especially +inversion.

agree on staying clear of PTs for the most part. also, sad that less than a week after expressing my sympathy for your sprain and saying that sprains were why i retired from ultimate (and most sports, most of the time), i sprained my own damn ankle. not as bad as yours but i sure won't be squatting imminently.

working around the ankle, day 1

WEIGHT: ???
SORENESS: none
ACHES/INJURIES: right ankle
MENTAL STATE: okay

- circuit x 4, exercises start every 30s; second exercise alternates
-- KB swing x 10
-- KB OHP x 5R; 5L; KB row x 5R; 5L

- circuit x 3
-- x-band walk x my hallway
-- band shoulder dislocate x 10
-- hip thrust @3s pause x 10
-- band pull-apart x 10

- KB swing x 100
broke into groups of 15-25 with short breaks

- stretch

my KB weighs 35 lbs.

also, being injured is not the time but once i'm healthy again i might actually try to manipulate my diet to [gasp!] add a bit of pure strength and [gasp!!!!!] actually try to lean out. i'm still below 12% bf per the mirror test but i'm not as lean as i could be. and i've been lazy about my diet. time to get deliberate for the first time in ages. soon.
