Well, because the deadlift has only the eccentric part. Once you lift it, you can drop it, theoretically speaking. Obviously for training you want an active eccentric part because of the training effects of it, but that's only for training.

did not even approach that height the rest of the time

Translation: I can still gain movement efficiency and get even higher.

Well, good luck. Imagine the amount of strength and CNS speed to lockdown to do that.

lol what are you talking about?  i was just mentioning that many people do DL jumps like that.  You think nobody does that and it's some very difficult plant?  Why is the amount of strength and CNS speed so overwhelming lol.  It is a normal plant used by many in DL jumps where the heel doesn't touch the ground

Really? Show me.

No, any jumper I've seen leads with the heel, just like in a one-leg jump. Basically, ankle dorsiflexion before jumping. If you would plant in plantar flexion, it will take too long and also the Achilles would not be already stretched out.

It would be plantar flexion -> dorsiflexion -> ankle overload (possible ankle collapse) -> plantar flexion

Whereas in a proper plant its' dorsiflexion -> plantar flexion jump

It's always a heel lead with the foot. Always.

I can never understand how people plant like that. Doesn't make any sense. How don't their feet slip on the ground, how don't their shoes deform, how are they not collapsing instantly at the knee, how can they look at the rim while planting (how do they know where the ground is?!) and so on. And that position... look how weird those legs look like in that position.

Agreed. No way you reproduce that on an empty court. You basically need to play competitively to get benefits.

best.
vert.
training.
advice.
EVER.

Disagree. He should've ate 3 (THREE) bags in 2 weeks, he messed it up.

For me, I usually always take off from too far out, and I have to stretch a lot with my hand extended forward instead of extended up. That is a loss of a tremendous amount of height.

You need to take it step by step. If you need a lot of power to dunk it, you will stiffen up. So you need to take it gradually and see where (at what point of "tension" or speed) you start stiffening up. Usually people start muscling the movement and "pushing" like in a standing vertical jump instead of being reactive, because they're not reactive enough when trying to jump maximally (in translation - they start trying to use muscle power instead of a fluid movement to achieve the desired height needed for a dunk).

Back in the day when I was light and weak I could usually dunk just from a long run-up only. 10 steps or so, at very high speeds. Meaning, almost no actual voluntary muscle power at all, just using the speed that I have accumulated during the run-up and just converting it to vertical "speed".

But as I got stronger my run-up did transition into a acceleration-type approach, where yes, I have to decelerate and "make my steps". More muscle, less reactivity.
