Pics, Videos, & Links / 40+ inch running vertical

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNZ6lUPCNvU" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNZ6lUPCNvU</a>

video from yesterday. im 5'9 in shoes so 69 inches. the orange plate under the rim is 9'6. on my second jump I had the top of my head was at the glass which is 2-3 inches or so below that. So lets just call it 9'2 to be conservative.

9'2 equals 110 inches. 110-69 = 41 inches. Those jumps were taken after playing pick up and dunking for a while. Plus, I am in the middle of a training phase and my legs havent fully recovered yet. So i'd say at the moment my running vertical is anywhere from 41-43 inches. 45 inches comming soon.  :headbang: :headbang:

Article & Video Discussion / What makes an "elite" athlete"
« on: August 18, 2011, 05:42:02 pm »
at what point can somebody consider them-self to be an elite athlete?

for example, I am 5'8 and my vertical is right around 40+ right now. I can cockback with 1 arm, catch dunks off the backboard, and just got my first 2 handed dunk off the dribble yesterday. I expect in the next 3-4 months to start throwing down some crazy dunks, for example 360 which I am very close to at the moment, just cant get it down.

Anyways, being 5'8 with my vertical and being able to do all that, does that make me an elite athlete? Now i am not crazy strong or fast, so does that put me out of contention for what somebody would consider to be an "elite athlete".

I'd just like to hear you guys thoughts on what you would consider a person with elite athletic abilities to be. Is somebody like a Lebron James who is incredibly strong, built like a tank, and extremely explosive with a 40+ inch vertical a good example of what somebody of the highest athleticism ranks would be? I think so. Other examples I can think of are Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Nate Robinson, etc.

Another question I have is can somebody excel in 1 area of athleticism and be considered "elite". For example T-Dub. he jumps ridiculously high, but what if he was weak and slow? I dont think that would make him an average athlete just because he only excels in 1 area. Another example is NFL running back Chris Johnson. CRAZY fast, but what if he couldnt lift a lot and had a low vertical?

just curious to hear your thoughts everyone. My goals are to have a running vertical of at least 45 inches, be able to throw down 360s and tomahawks, and bench 200+ pounds all at 5'8 and 155lbs w/single digit body fat. Would that make me an "elite athlete"?

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Single Leg Jumping Improvement
« on: July 23, 2011, 08:56:40 pm »
Lance (or anyone else)

Im really looking to increase my single leg jumping . Off 2 feet my vertical is right around 40 inches but off 1 it is a much different story. Its very inconsistent. 2 week ago I got my first dunk off 1 and havent been able to come close since. At times I can even grab rim with two hands off 1 and other times, not even close.

Lately ive been doing BSS with a dumbbell, goblet style, for 3 sets of 5. Ive been using heavy weights, and 2 weeks ago I hit 20 reps with each leg with an 85 lb db. I weight about 160 so i feel my legs are pretty strong.

Do you have any suggestions on what kinds of lifts/plyo exercises I should be focusing on to improve my single leg jumping. Should I switch to donig the bss with a barbell now that the dumbbells are getting a little to heavy to hold, or should I pick a different exercise. What do you think is holding me back? Im really looking for some guidance as too what my training should be like to improve my single leg jumping while still improving my 2 footed jump at the same time.

If you've written a program for single leg jumping improvement i'd love to see it, or if you even had the time to write one up I would highly appreciate it. Not trying to ask for too much though. Any advice is very much appreciated.

ADARQ & LanceSTS - Q&A / Hang clean question for Lance
« on: July 23, 2011, 03:23:08 pm »
Lance,

I was wondering what direct effect hang cleans have on a persons vertical. In other words, how can they make you jump higher? I have a high vertical right now and can dunk easily. But I'm looking to become more explosive when going up with the ball. I lose about 2-3 inches when I dribble up to the rim with the ball. Being able to become more explosive with the ball in my hands will help my game tremendously and with a couple more inches I'll be able to dunk with two hands with ease off the dribble.

Do you think adding hang cleans to my training would help with jumping higher with the ball in my hands?
