Volleyball / Volleyball is the Olympics' most watched sport
« on: July 28, 2012, 07:27:17 pm »
Beach and indoor are, by far, the most watched Olympic sports. More people watch these sports than the athletics or the swimming or the basketball. For those of you who want to see some ridiculous jumping, I'd encourage you to take a look at the USA beach team, in particular Phil Dalhausser. One of the best athletes in the world, IMO.

Can't wait to see world ranked 22 Australia cause some upsets in the indoor discipline. Who's keen for the volleyball? :p

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / STANKY RVJ PR
« on: July 16, 2012, 08:26:50 am »
So my spike reach went from 336cm to 344cm. First actual PR in 8 months. 8cm straight up. I now have an 89cm RVJ (35") and much work ahead. Next goal is 350cm spike reach or 37-38" RVJ.

Point of thread: Having not PR'd in 8 months is tough but if you keep at it, it will happen. ;)

Read an article from Kelly and I now have a firm grasp on Limit/Explosive/Reactive strength. Realized I wasn't really doing any explosive stuff, mostly limit and reactive.

Will incorporating paused rep squats help?

If you could pick between an seated calf raise or a standing calf raise to build strength in the calves, which would you choose?

I was reading a discussion on the seated calf raise and how that movement is more responsible for 'high calves' as opposed to standing calf raises producing those longer calf muscles. The discussion or rather argument then went on to discuss that having a high calf insertion lead to longer achilles and therefore more force... Don't know whether it's completely correct or not.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to seated calf raises being more beneficial to jumpers?

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Kadour Ziani's Legs
« on: April 06, 2012, 06:05:43 am »

He doesn't look like the strongest bloke in the world, so how does he get up? Is it just plain ridiculous explosiveness? I bet it has something to do with his incredible flexibility. What is the adarq theory on Kadour?

All the elite jumpers, i.e. MJ, ACB Jr, Leonel have one major thing in common. They have a ridiculously low BFP. Someone told me that MJ was considered clinically anorexic with his BFP of 3% at one stage (obviously wasn't...).

I think there's a lot of emphasis on strength and reactivity training and not enough about getting ripped. There's this guy I train with. Same height. Same reach. Weaker than me. I weigh 80kg he weighs 72kg. He gets up higher than I do because he's skinny as. I have a higher muscle percentage but also a higher BFP.

I think people need to be aiming for <9% if they're serious about getting to 40-50".

Well, if my only goal is to get a bigger vertical, is there any real necessity to be doing upper body work? I'm doing Smolov for the next 12 weeks, so my legs and lower upper body are going to be drained from that. Any problems with ignoring my upper body? Should I be doing just enough to maintain what I've got?

Program Review / Smolov Tips?
« on: December 18, 2011, 02:56:26 am »
Hi,

I'm about to start my 12 week journey through hell. I was wondering if any of you had any useful tips or tricks I could use throughout my Smolov cycle. I'd like any assistance possible. My log is below.
