Article & Video Discussion / Mobility and Recovery
« on: April 05, 2011, 10:27:16 am »
I've been doing these Mobility Workouts of the Day (MWODs) for a while and it makes a world of difference.  When I don't do them at night, I'm stiff, sore, and usually end up hurting myself (as is the case currently with my strained quad and now rolled ankle)!  Anyhow, this dude Kelly Starrett has some great ideas about how to mobilize muscle groups and joints for athletic pursuits.  His goal is to get you to peak performance for your next workout, not just some weird flexibility thing.  It's all performance based.  I also really like his upstream/downstream ideas, and the fact the whole body is related, so if your hamstrings are tight, you need to work the system, not just that muscle.

Here's two vids I thought were very applicable to this crowd:

Recovering your jumping Calves

Recovering your low back after squats and box jumps
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUKhljDYOZM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUKhljDYOZM</a>

Even gave a shout out to the honey badger!  :P

Good stuff for old guys like me.  He has his own website that posts a new MWOD everyday, mainly focusing on previous Crossfit workouts or big ones coming up, but it has great variety.

I did a video a while back of me dunking (or attempting to) at my house.  Here's one I did yesterday (with two horribly sore feet and frickin shin splints!).

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9RZ_actXIQ" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9RZ_actXIQ</a>

And here are some still comparisons from my first vid back in Jan.

I can see a couple of inches here, not the best comparison but I can for sure tell the difference in the effort between the pics.  (The left one is now, the right one is then BTW.)

Can't tell a big difference here except the fact that I look like a fat @$$ in the one on the right and not the left.  Same thing as above about the level of exertion.  My face looks like I'm giving it all I've got in the old one, the newer one looks more relaxed.

What do yall think?  Still not going very deep in my takeoff, I'll work on that (if my freakin feet ever stop hurting!).

HOW THE HELL DO I EMBED PICS?????

Thought I'd throw this one up there.  Man, I've lost a lot of techinique.  Dropping my hands, not slipping low, off balance, not turning my hips on lead leg kicks, weak left elbows, etc.  You'll see.

Pretty deep stuff.  I like to read this stuff when I feel like I'm wavering or after I've slipped up (like I did with 5 Guys for lunch today!).  I hope some of yall get something out of this.
