try a mental cue to get your legs to fire hard. Imagine the ground is a layer of glass with nothing underneath it. Try to push your feet through it/ shatter it. Don't think about going up at all.

Try this with moderate weight. Works wonders for me (same issue)

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Re: Hill Sprints

Your basically just running against a greater resistance, getting stronger.

Yeah funny though that the training effect seems to fade. For me at least.

Also, when you can't change the athlete's angle you change the running surface's angle. That will train acceleration and the digging phase better (start of the sprint).

Maybe thats it. My acceleration feels a lot better. Thats a more accurate description of the 'powerful' feeling.

Whatever it is I like it. Gonna keep doing them 2 times a week  :D

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Hill Sprints

What athletic aspects do hill sprints train. I'm talking short distance (15m), really steep hills (45 degrees). I seem to feel really strong for a few days after doing them. Just more powerful.

I can't imagine they're about quickness so much as you don't move fast like a flat sprint. Are they more about power/ rate of force?

no plyos, just basic strength training! Build her a t-handle and buy some cheap used weightplates and let her do deadlifts, sumo-deadlifts, swings & one legged squats, king deadlifts and other bodyweight exercises. Also various "core" stabilization exercises like planks could be very beneficial.

Again, no plyos! Just strength training + volleyball training will be far enough for at least 1 year or much longer, depending on how fast she gets stronger ;)

Exactly. Make some sandbags. Buy a cheap weight set (she won't need a lot of weight). She needs to get to a body weight squat as a first goal.

No plyos until she is stronger. The only movement efficiency type training I suggest she gets is maybe hill sprinting (steep hills) in off season when she isn't playing 4 times a week. Always on hills to protect the hammies and reduce shock to weak tendons.

Do natural ones with feet under a barbell. You don't need a machine.

Your pc probably won't let you do a full natural one at first so use hands for assistance. Get ready for sore hamstrings the next day. One of the best hamstrings moves around.

Article & Video Discussion / Re: Interesting Jump snatch variation.

kinda looks like a broad jump snatch. But second the above... what's the dude's rationale for the movement???

I tried hip blet squats when I had a sore back late last year. I bought the Iron Mind belt and basicalyl gave up after 1 session because no matter how I position the belt I always felt the chain was ripping into my hips at the bottom. They were just so freaking uncomfortable it wasn't worth it. The next day I had all sorts of nasty ass bruises.

As for leg press the biggest issue I have is that there is a lot less hip extension involved compared to squats and deadlifts. Good for quad development though.

Interesting experience thanks man. I went out and bought a hip squat belt. Couldn't help myself  ;D

I used it tonight for the first time. I expected some discomfort like that but nah... all good on my body. I'm red and chaffed around the hips but not painful or bruised. Got my legs good too. VMO has been raped in the good way (better than front squatting for me)

I used it with a 7ft oly bar, which wasn't nearly as cumbersome as it looked. I didn't mind it. Still going to get an ez curl bar to use though (I found a use for a curl bar  :ninja:).

What an ego check man. Went for 3 x 6 at 100kg. Got like 4 decent reps in the whole lot. The rest I either cheated depth or assisted with arms on the power rack cause it was farkin heavy. I low bar just shy of 2 x bw so yeah  :'(

I like this contraption. But I have a shitty build for squatting (good puller though). I can see the hips getting mad chaffed at like 400 lbs but based on the retarded lifts at 220 lbs I've got a while before worrying about it.

sprint, hill sprint, sprint with light sled

41
yeah like that last one  :) Guess no one has used them before???

Kinda looks like he's grabbing the chain off his privates half way through  :P

42
yeah thats the kinda stuff I'm wondering. You might be right............

43
haha even if I was being a bit closed minded about leg press it don't matter man. I ain't got one at home so its a redundant statement on my part anyway.

Scratch the comment about leg press  :uhhhfacepalm:

The rest of the question stands......

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Hip Belt Squats
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:16:15 am »
Anyone used hip belt squats before? Real squats rule of course but I'm always looking for functional (not leg press) ways to overload the legs.

I have long mofo legs which make back squats pc dominant no matter how high the bar is. My quads are pretty weak compared to my hams and glutes. Its particularly annoying cause my VMOs need more work to minimise my tendonitis issues.

I front squat and BSS regularly but these don't allow the same balls out linear progression as a big back squat due to the difficulty of stabilising the weight. Wondering if BSS and front squat as primaries with hip belt squats as a secondary might be a good approach?

Any thoughts? I lift at home and building a couple of platforms ain't a thing.... I'm handy like bob the builder mang  8)

Bodybuilding / Re: Bodybuilding is so gay
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:09:16 am »
I got lots of respect for real body builders. The dedication is amazing. They sacrifice good food and a lot of lifestyle for a goal man. That dedication would go a long way toward making them a decent athlete if they wanted to be.

BUT real body builders are NOT the fags who go to the gym to do 3 types of bench, swing biep curls in the farking rack and leg extensions. I wouldn't swerve to miss those morons.

I also hate the whole perception of an athletic build in the western world. Big biceps + chesticles + mad abz = strength. Sh!t most of these guys couldn't squat with their wallet in their pocket or dead lift a dropped pancake. My gym was so full of these losers I built a power rack at home  :highfive:
