I read in a study that a dynamic warmup compared to a static one contributes to a greater broad jump distance. So I would make sure that you're feeling nice and flexible before doing your broad jumps, especially when it comes to your hip mobility. From my experience, I jump farther when I can load the eccentric with a greater range of motion and swing my arms until they're directly over my head and pointing upwards. You can also try to hold your arms in the air as long as possible during your flight to delay the landing as much as possible. Legs be shoulder width apart, just make sure you're comfortable with your stance. I read that you have a tryout coming up so I thought I'd offer some advice in case they're testing broad. GL

What works well is cut 1/4 the volume on day 1 (week of combine ~7 days out), day 2-4 another 1/4,  days 5-6 should be doing 1/4 the volume/intensity of what you normally do on the field, basically going through the movements at half speed.

Lance, can this concept be used during a deload week when you're in the middle of a training cycle and trying to recover/ do testing before starting up again?

Sickenin does the name JC Cooper ring a bell?? I read elitetrack articles quite frequently and I had a hunch it was you but your post about the combine, comparing verts and the 40 yard dash definitely confirms it. Also your infamous posts on the spine and its significance in sprinting. You have some interesting ideas man but it seems like the more knowledgeable guys on there make good arguments against them. Especially your spine as the engine claim.

But can you please post your sprint times and sprint history?

to the original poster. Basketball doesnt really have a weight lifting environment. With football every body wonders your bench, squat, and power clean. With basketball if you can bump it in the post/jump really high/dunk/look jacked/quick/explosive/etc. than no one really worries about the weight room. Yes some people can do this without really training too much for it.

for example: this kid at a park i play ball at can: dunk all kinds of ways at 5'8, is jacked and is quick as hell. ALL WITHOUT TRAINING.

for someone like me, I have to train for that.

Also with basketball you have to remember the hours needed for practice and playing trying to gain experience. ITs not like football where you don't practice as much. If you have the option of improving your athleticism or basketball iq/skills and both are decent at the nba level, I would always go for the skill and bball iq.

No one mentions it but ANDRE FUCKING MILLER. He is not an athlete but he is a BASKETBALL player.

That's what I thought until I saw this a while back.

Ok, fair enough but then everyone else would be taking them too and you would be in the same position as you are now relative to everyone in your sport. You would have no option but to resort back to the dreaded barbell to find that extra edge. Say your ultimate goal is a 45" vertical knowing that the human limit is about 50", would you still have the same goal if people started jumping 60". Probably not, you'd say shit if they can jump 60" I know I can hit 50". Its our nature to never be satisfied, so as long as the competitive environment is equal for everyone, what's the difference? If steroids were legal and everyone took them, I'd definitely do the same but what difference would it really make. The people that were better than me before would still be better so nothing at all has changed.

What I really love and care about is the pain and suffering from working as hard as my body and mind can endure (while being smart about it of course). For some reason that suffering just gives me life and excites me more than anything. Then my satisfaction comes when I realize I'm stronger, faster, and more athletic from my training. Even if I take steroids and my performance jumps to another level, I'm still going to train to get the same feeling and to try to get even better. In essence, nothing would change. I really believe in the cliche, "its the journey that matters not the destination".

Lol I'll be more clear. The topic statement, Barbells And Steroids: Equally Unfair, is simply wrong. They are not equally unfair because to get stronger by lifting weights you have to take time away from your sport and dedicate it to lifting. If you take steroids, you can play your sport and improve on the skills it demands but you're stronger from the steroids. In essence you're not giving anything up to become stronger. So I'm saying you cannot substitute one for the other to make a legitimate case for why steroids should be legal. All I was trying to say is that this premise for reaching the conclusion, steroids should be legal for anyone to use, is not applicable. You think I didn't say anything substantial because I didn't really voice my opinion. But it is simply as follows:

Should steroids be legalized in sports- Very Debatable

Should athletes take steroids while they are illegal
- Not Debatable, they should all adhere to the rules because they apply to everyone equally. This isn't an argument in my opinion.

yea thanks I googled the guy and he seemed to have done some research on the matter. Most of his advice was directed at addressing stability at the spine. There were some dvd's with corrective exercises but they were damn expensive.

Gary, I'm not going to say that your argument is wrong, but I think the premises for your argument is wrong. I don't feel its justifiable to compare lifting weights to attain unnatural strength to taking steroids to attain the same end. Athletes have to dedicate much of their time and focus to weightlifting to get that strength whereas with steroids they simply inject and play their sport and see their performance improve. I just don't see how its fair to make that argument on this premise. You can't substitute weightlifting with taking steroids just because the strength achieved is unnatural in both cases. It just doesn't make sense.

With that said, I'm not saying that your conclusion is wrong at all. To some degree I do think that the policy is unfair and the result of mass hysteria. But I just don't agree with the argument you're using to get there.

Injury, Prehab, & Rehab talk for the brittlebros / Body Imbalances
« on: June 27, 2011, 06:10:23 pm »
One thing that really gets on my nerves are some imbalances I have that influence my training. My right shoulder hangs lower than my left and my reach is ~1 inch higher with my left. This has influenced my in the following ways:

*I land on my left leg first during jump squats and have to make an adjustment if I want to land on and work both legs.

*I noticed during RDLs that my right shoulder was hanging significantly lower than the left and probably holding a greater % of the weight.

*My left leg is stronger than my right.

*It has made me susceptible to injury and pain. Coming from my right groin area and some pain in my right shoulder.

How should I go about addressing these imbalances if at all? Current methods I use are single leg bounding, one-leg stability work, and upper body work using dumbbells. I feel like these have helped so far but I'm also worried about potential injuries in the future.

Do any of you experience similar issues and if so, how do you go about dealing with them?

This is a pretty kool thread. I'm going to post the broad jump pr i got today, I'd appreciate any advice that can help me reach 10'. The jump is 9'7, a one inch pr lol.
