my best broad jump (well only time i done it was last year) was 2.85 metres  ~112", I want to start recording it again and hit 3m......................THAT VID ANDREW POSTED UP WAS CRAZY!

nice 112" aint bad, get that 120+.

ya i love that vid :P

The broad jump seems to use a fair amount more glute (hip extension) and less quad (knee extension)

yup, as you go from vertical to horizontal, contribution of hamstrings/glutes increases, quad contribution decreases.

so if you have a big vert and not a big broad jump then you know your quads are the strong suit..am i right?

so Adarqui that means you might be have strong quads and not as strong glutes

It could also be that one whose vertical is better than their broad jump has merely practice the vertical jump more. Broad jumps require a lot of technique.

yea built up nerve connections from repition right?

but i am still wondering how that 1 guy beat Adarqui, just does'nt make sense 2 me

I know 9 feet is nothing special, wasn't trying to say it is. Just pointing out that adarq, who can dunk and could dunk well at one point has a worse broad jump than me, who can't. Also, I wouldn't say a standing broad jump is much like the track event. Broad jump is straight power, no reactivity. Long jump is all reactivity -- you ever seen a world-class long jumper try to fly off two feet at the end of the approach?

It's an okay tool for measuring lower body power, but I wouldn't say it's any better than regular old standing vert. Except easier to measure without equipment.

agreed

N=2 (me + adarq) evidence for why broad jump is completely useless w/r/t vert, dunking, whatever:

Before my ankle sprain I was messing around in between sets during a workout and broad jumped 9', or farther than adarq has ever jumped in his life, even at his peak. No warm up, just jumped. And yet I probably have the worst vert (definitely the worst running vert) on this whole forum at the moment, even without the sprain.

the track event though? the long jump! it's basically a running broad jump, same thing in my lay men eyes..

do you have long legs?

idk this really seems like a good test 2 me but what do i know

I have to admit the people who jump higher than me long jump longer than me so this must be a crazy freak thing with you there

9ft is actually nothing super special though, i can hit 8Ft and that was after lifting so i'll try it with me being fresh and warmed up
hopefully i'll hit 9 1/2ft and beat both of you haha jk jk

Track & Field / Re: hs track and field coaches suck
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:34:37 am »
ok i know from experience that my high school coaches are idiots

I had 2, one quit after freshman year

we never get a chance to lift, when we do we go and they tell us to squat on our toes, which is very very bad

they made us do box jumps for 20 reps x3 sets, which was endurance and we are the sprinting team

never once did we have recovery days, we went hard all the time even before a meet

we ran alot of distance running for being a short distance squad, alot of times coach was lazy and made us do 30+min jogs, which i have to say are just a recipe for disaster as it really got everyone with shin splints

we never practiced with blockes enough

we are a 4a school and we compete against the biggest schools in indiana, and most the guys ended up leaving half way through, or got hurt....so I ended up running against 2 of the fastest kids in the state and got schooled

they both did many things wrong, don't say HS coaches know what they are doing because  I had 2 and they suck and were very well respected among coaches....there may be a few who know what they are doing but that's another story   i amd talking average

damn that's a pretty bad testimonial for your coaches.. it's unfortunate they know so little.

well since they did track i am guessing they learned it from their coaches...they sucked

the Big schools that have a ton of money and what not seem to have very good coaches...and that's probably the reason they school us

there aer plenty more reasons why these 2 suck i just don't have time to remember it all and waste more time posting crap

1 thing that i like is distance coaches know what they are talking about, but their distance coaches, not sprinting coaches...distance is gay in my mind
sprinting is hard and requires reps that are harder but less sets ...so most people or average peopl(my track coaches) think that distance always works harder...no it just takes longer for us 2 recover,...they get really mad when we goof around inbetween sets and stuf..that's cuz that's how we are but we still get the run done, except we need the rest.....

every1 on my sprint team was dead after practice of sprinting or doing something for a long ass timeand overtrained

I like his attitude

that's how i go out and like to play...F all coaches who try to act serious all the damn time, i like to play around but have super concentration and what not at the moment i am doing work haha

any1 with me?

it's 90%mental and 10% physical, seriously

well most football player's have that really aggressive attitude.. hardly anyone has that basketball swag attitude, such as chad johnson/deion/usain.. they got more of a "swag/flashy" attitude, which you don't see much on the football field, ESPECIALLY with coaches.. coaches usually have that attitude because honestly, most of the coaches who try and "be friendly" with the player's get used and abused, especially on the high school level.. as a coach you have to make people respect you and listen to you every minute, so being a "player's coach" usually doesn't work on the high school level, because immature athletes will get lazy/goof around too much if you allow it to happen.. so i understand where alot of those 'hard ass' football/basketball coaches are coming from... that stuff is fine on the college/pro level, because people are very serious on that level, so it can work.

i am too friendly as an s&c coach by default.. i mean I AMP PEOPLE UP hardcore in person.. kind of like a damn ray lewis of sorts.. when I just let my guard down and be too friendly with the h.s. kids, many of them start acting like little bitches, then it ruins the relationship.. if you look at my youtube videos, a kid like "jake rudock" or "russel", you can mess around with those kids and keep it relaxed.. because regardless of how much "fun you're having during the workout", when it comes time to do the set, they flip the switch and bring the intensity.. other kids you can't do that, they don't know how to flip the switch.

peace

i am guessing i am one of those who flips the switch, and it brings my nervousness down alot, which i used to have a huge problem with

but i know those type of kids, they are the type of kids who don't go on though

i don't cheat myself at all, i am always sprinting on the court of field to get to the huddle and what not..but i like to talk in a line and stuff 2,

i am kinda developing that mentality since football..our WR coach goes hard and kinda acts like..he is also a S&c i thinkg, don't take my word, but he does a speed camp i do every friday or so with a small group and i love to fool around

that so yea i am trying to keep this attitude

but i think a relaxing attitude is the best, when super relaxed 1 can produce more energy than when super pumped up..or atleast what i have researched and i try to do...alot of different opinions out there

but the kids who work hard and don't cheat are the ones whe seem to start and go on right?

nice vid, never saw that before.. i wish i would have gotten into sprinting alot younger, it feels so good to run fast.

I did xc cuz when i was young people thought that's what athletic people do,...wrong i hated long distance running so much
i had a 3k time of 20min before i quit freshman year..really messed my bball career up man, took all my time and what not
plus you lose a ton of weight, don't jump high at all, and you get slower on sprints

sprints are amazing man, it's just fun, when it's short distance that is fricken 400m feels like god hates u
thougth i am probably a possible beast at the 800m because first time i ran it was freshman year with 2:30
i hated it cuz it's so lsow then i was punished by coach for missing a practice that i had 2 miss with doing it again
i did'nt try an just sprinted the last 30m and got 2:20

who does'nt like to go fast
but overall i fell victim to which is more sexy? girls don't really like distance that much, hey when you go fast you look cool
so yea fell victim to what girls think again hahah

Track & Field / Re: Jonathan Edwards, Triple Jump beast
« on: July 12, 2010, 04:17:17 pm »
Weightlifting was a big part of Jonathan Edwards training..he was a best in the weightroom..he powercleaned 140kg at 70kg bodyweight so a 2xBW powerclean..he had a very impressive bench also. he squatted until 1994 then he stopped and only focused on olympic lifts..his squat was around 200kg these numbers are unbeleivable for a track athlete..i have a few articles which i will post here when i find them.. the year he broke the WR alot of his training focused on the olympic lifts clean and snatch..it remarkable how strong he was considering how skinny he was..Carl Johnson trained where they focused on low reps 1-4..not sure about his vertical..his best broad jump is 3.14m

Jonathan Edwards, Triple Jump beast
this guy is a monster! triple jump world record holder
he ran 10.48 according to wikipedia, which is'nt valid but the only source i found

I just looked into him trying to wonder if he was naturally strong or he lifted or something
he only weighs around 160

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Edwards_(athlete)

^^not valid but best i could find quickly^^

anyone got anything else on him?

I am guessing he is super reactive in strength,

i once herd of the "iron leg" that triple jumpers develope because of the force, but this event is just like running one leg jump in bball and what not

any1 know his standing vertical and running vertical?

^^^^^i am reposting this hear because we were all amped up about the first white guy to break 10seconds in 100m, well here is another white guy who kills in jumping^^^^^^

the track is a much better place to hold them at
you can't compare your gonna be slower at the turf than the track

some of these guys crossed there arms over their body and what not, so maybe some form work could have these guys running 4.3 in that nfl combine 1
