Injury, Prehab, & Rehab talk for the brittlebros / Icing

I still use and see other people recommending icing for injuries - both acute and chronic, but reading up it seems it may not have been the best thing. Same goes for NSAID use. Also wondered, if nsaids inhibit healing so much - surely they are terrible for post surgical pain relief?

What everyone's views on icing? Do you use it?

Nutrition & Supplementation / Supplements in 2015
« on: December 01, 2015, 01:33:06 pm »
Just wondered what everybody takes beyond their food these days - people generally seem to have cut down and are taking much less than they may have done a few years ago.

personally i scrapped multivitamins, expensive protein powders, pre workouts etc and a bunch of other stuff i used to mix up into the routine. for me these day's its:

whey protein (concentrate - cheap)
3g fish oil
vit D3 (2500-5000)
Zinc + Mag (50mg zn, 500mg mg)
creatine (teaspoon a day)
psyillium husk - teaspoon if i didn't eat much fibre that day
dextrose - in PW shake just because its cheap convenient carbs when i need to get cals in limited time frame

i also have some l-theanine/tyrosine i take occasionally with a load of coffee if i have a tonne of work to get done or something. i also sporadically take ^^ vitamin C but i'm unsure...seems there is evidence in preventing minor illness in training athletes. 'However, vitamin C is unable to reduce the frequency of colds in a healthy population. An athlete supplementing vitamin C, on the other hand, can expect to cut the risk of getting a cold in half. Supplemental vitamin C is able to reduce the duration of a cold by 8-14% in any population, when it is taken as a daily preventative measure, or at the beginning of a cold.' - http://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-c/

interestingly

'Supplementation of 3,000mg Vitamin C appears to increase sexual frequency from 4 times monthly to 14 times. No influence on masturbation frequency'

- haven't experienced this effect recently unfortunately.  :(

what's anyone else take?

Anybody watching this? Thought there'd be some talk of it on here, especially with it being in the U.S.

Few WR's gone already

- W u58kg snatch - 112kg

- M u62kg c+j 183kg

- u56kg c + j 171kg   DODGY CALL!?

I love Instagram/hookgrip for following weightlidting, really makes it so accessible.

The girl from my new gym is lifting tomorrow in the women's u63kg A category tomorrow, will be interesting to see how she does! She uploaded a vid earlier of a 115kg c + j in the training hall where the plates all fell off...lol

So I've got myself a bike that I'll be using for commuting (7 miles each way atm) and perhaps for longer rides on weekends.

How will this effect my strength/power training and what can I do to minimise negative effects?

Obviously my calorie intake will have to increase and I'll have to stretch more.

Anybody else cycle + strength train?

Maybe soon I'll look like this

Article & Video Discussion / Meditation/Headspace?
« on: February 13, 2015, 08:25:04 am »
Wasn't sure where to post this, but anybody into meditation?

I dabbled in the past and knew it helped. I'm generally quite a nervous person so I decided to really try and stick with it and have experienced great effects so far!

I'm using the headspace system, actually bought the paid version after the first 10 free days. find it's a really good way to get started if you don't know where to begin and also paying for it makes me much more consistent with my practice!

and of course the evidence is just awesome..for something that takes so little time and is free

Nutrition & Supplementation / Saturated fat and heart disease

http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/well/2014/03/17/study-questions-fat-and-heart-disease-link/

New study involving 600k people shows no link between sat fat and heart disease! Probably won't come as a surprise to most on this site but hopefully we start to see guideline changes from the stupid obed currently out! Also nice to see this in mainstream news after all the comments/shock /concerns I got when doing keto...

Nutrition & Supplementation / Gluten/Wheat
« on: November 04, 2013, 01:40:25 pm »
Anyone here go gluten/wheat free? Either due to sensitivity/coeliac or other reasons?

I've always eaten wheat, and never really noticed 'issues'...although I've always had digestive issues..docs just said IBS etc...

Anyway...last summer I did a CKD for a few months, and had no digestive issues...except on my carb up when my digestive system would hate me...

whether this was due to gluten..or just reintroduction of carbs..its hard to say..

These days I try to stay away from gluten where possible, but when I cheat e.g. went home to see family/girlfriend this weekend and ate so much wheat, my digestive system went bat shit crazy on me, still feel pretty terrible now.

I've read that sometimes people who are sensitive to gluten can not really notice it, until they cut it out and reintroduce it...with symptoms then being worse/more noticeable..when glutens reintroduced, which they certainly seem to be with me at the moment.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the whole gluten debate?

Strength, Power, Reactivity, & Speed Discussion / Motivation
« on: January 03, 2012, 04:57:39 pm »
Recently my motivation to train has been...terrible.

I don't know what my goals are, Im not playing basketball so much anymore i've kinda grown out of that dream and focusing on my grades/uni next year/future career...

but i still want to be beast, athletically, physically...

but before when people asked me why i do it it was always...for basketball...

I've taken breaks gone back started again been inconsistent took more breaks...and gone nowhere, backwards if anything, ive gained body fat, lost muscle mass and lost strength...i can still dunk though  :ninja:

Not sure why im posting it, just feel like sharing my predicament...

Should I write up some goals, a new routine which is manageable, and go again?
