Title: 2019 Vert Comp
Post by: Coges on January 09, 2019, 10:34:20 pm
So I'm a competitive bastard. Even seeing other people at the gym makes me competitive and I think I do my best when I've got something to go up against. Is anyone up for a vert comp? I'm thinking test verts - train - test verts again - profit!

Thoughts?

I've titled it 2019 but I'm thinking more a 12 or 16 week thing.

I'm in, haven't broken 32" in 6 months tho so wont be threatening anyone here. But love a good comp. Maybe we should have a hashtag and we can post updates on insta?

Nice. I haven't tested in ages. Will get my baseline next week.

Yes definitely go with a hashtag. #2019vertcomp does seem to fit nicely. Any other suggestions?

tbh, i bet it would. that's what's crazy. all of this running has me feeling so springy/powerful. sometimes i jump up onto the curb and such, or over a small railing, or over that snake several months ago (lol), and i feel so good, almost dunk level. obviously don't have that peak power anymore, but running has definitely kept that spring going. getting some of that jump specific power back would just require actual jump sessions. would be cool to do long light runs with "strides" but instead, jumps. imagine slow quarter mile recovery laps with a L-SLRVJ every lap, going at a vertec (that sounds pretty fun lmao). all of this sounds kind of "steepler" ish.

for a while now, i've been interested in potentially jumping on grass.. :ninja: i wouldn't jump on hard courts anymore, or even indoor gyms. but i really do love springy grass. would be cool to buy a vertec and get some jumps in eventually. dragging it out there would suck tho. hah.

for now, i'll just spectate. 8)

:D :ibjumping:

Just out of interests sake maybe do a few tests. Once a month or something. Just to see where you are?

ya i'd need to figure out a way to measure it properly, on grass (ie a real or turf football field, touches on the goal post etc).

need to think about it.

I'd be in but it wouldn't be fair, if you remember me from Terminal Vertical I would gain like 2 to 3 inches of vert every week lol

I guess I will join. My hat off to acole14 for wasting me in our vertical gain competition..... I went negative 1 in while he at least maintained and gained.....

I am at 220 lb and sub 400 full paused squat, my prime was either many eyars ago at 178 lb and 315 or 215 and 405lb squat, not sure which one was better.....

dno which is better, but i'd go with lighter bw + strong squat rather than heavy bw + strong squat, even at the same relative strength levels. regardless, vert comp def needs more jumping.

doesn't matter what your squat is, if you're not jumping enough.

my 2cents!

pc!

Just edited the first post and will keep the running tally there. When you do test your vert just state what kind of jump it was and I'll update the post.

I have decided to monitor my vert progress while doing sprint workouts, which currently my standing vertical jump is at 23 inches.

I tested standing vert tonight. Fingers about 2" over a 10ft rim which gives me a 22-23" SVJ. SLRVJ was a bit better and I was getting mid wrist touch on the rim (with ball) so closer to 30" on that side.

Good job for actually testing. I'm not game to test in case it's too depressing. Ha

Haha I was there so I had to. 22" is pretty depressing though but it's always been that depressing for me.

I am feeling much better of my bad SVJ's measurement, but it's not really that bad then I guess. But I can't reach the rim at 23 inches as I am not tall. But a good start where everyone is almost at about the same.

OP updated as it's the 1st of Feb here. I'm going to test properly next week to get a full baseline.

Might be worth some others doing the same :ninja:

this doesn't count obviously.. for fun:

this was september 2017, probably ~28" L-SLRVJ:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H4_9QYbBno

that's alot of lost vert!

same hoop, september 2011 (-6 years), probably ~35" L-SLRVJ occasionally in this session.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_nXbwu89fA

my left leg (quad/itb/glute) was destroyed too.. basically had a "thigh splint" (similar to shin splint).

#memorylane

also, August 2016. got back up to like 32" peak or so around this time, iirc.. was jumping alot, lunging alot, sprinting alot, and running:

Starting 2019 heights (from four days ago):

SVJ: ~30
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTbEcMwrtl0

DSVJ: ~31''
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ1iV9d2arw

This is a target of ~255cm, or 75cm/~30'' if I hit it. I'm scraping it with SVJ and clearing it by probably only an inch with DSVJ.

Man. took some time for me to find it. Journals thread was the last place I expected to find this.

I measured my SVJ after finishing my speed session, which was at 24 inches.

I'll get some baselines this week even tho it's March 😞

I haven't tested mine in the last month but am getting a new adjustable ring for home so will be able to test it anytime I want.

Hit a 32" rvj the other day. Vid on insta, not official because it's an outdoor rim of unknown height but will try get a better jump on video indoor

Alright, in the middle of warmups for leg day and decided to test the SVJ. We have some of the Olympic ring things (? Lol) in the studio room in adjustable straps. So I measured them out and just kept moving them up. They're in the corner so nervous about using them for RVJ but... one jump at 35", two at 34ish and the first one at 32+/- a tad. Attempts went 32, 34, 35, 36(f), 34 barely.

Will figure out a halfway decent way to test all the RVJ variations as I lift tonight I hope.

Latest jump vid on insta around 34-36". I wasn't expecting to jump quite so high otherwise I  would have prepped the session better (had the phone by the sideline .. far for a clear video). Not bad for my 2nd jump session of the season .. can't wait to lose some of this deadweight and switch over to the peaking phase of training.

Also found out that if i jump without the ball i can get a nice athletic looking approach to the rim from the left side of the rim. Which is interesting because i do most of my jumping on the R side which is my least athletic side because im very slow approaching from the right of the rim. I am left handed by the way. Left of the rim im much faster but with the caveat that i can't jump well or so i thought, except it seems that only applies with the ball. Im a goofy jumper by the way which is why all of this is the wrong way around.

latest I see is the 32"? you speaking of that one or a new one? anyway, nice.

damn you have to tell us how you increased your vert from 12" to 34-36" in a few days. :ninja:

SVJ now a solid 36"! Eagerly awaiting a rested dunk session for a RVJ test although my movement efficiency is probably down lol
