Also! Forget I did a squat check last Friday after my lifts! Was pleasantly surprised since I have barely squatted at all and nothing heavy in a damn minute. Bar x a few to grease the groove as it were then 135x3, 225x2, 315x1 and this 365 single. I feel like I definitely had more but was quite happy to maintain this as easily as it felt, especially with no belt/knee sleeves/Oly shoes!

Oof. Kingfish is a monster. I am but a peasant in comparison!

Slow week of training due to cramming all my hours into a few days at work to get a small 3 day getaway in. No real "progression" just continuing to try and get stronger/more stable in all ROMs/positionsand maintain some springiness. So, here's a vid from after Tuesdays sesh. I find depth jumps are usually a good "bounce check" for me since I haven't had time to get a a real dunk/jump season in FOREVERRRRRR (yes I'm having withdrawals).

Decided to go after some box jumps after my workout yesterday. Started at 30" standing and moved to running around 42". Really need to start videoing all of these. The running 42-45" jumps were very bouncy feeling. This is jump 2 (and my last jump of the night) at 49.5". BW 194lbs. The fordt one definitely felt better but alas, I'm dumb and didn't video.

Notable things: I seem to shorten my plant considerably in the gym vs on the court. Not sure how much, if any, it affects the jump but I am attributing it to a space concern. Also I've been working on my 'goofy' plant (LR) and it's definitely improving. Was able to get to the 45" mark on that plant albeit not straight legged at all lol

This just in: haven't trained since ^ day. Fuckin cluster migraines are back and my prescription shit isn't even touching them this time. Back to the doc Tuesday. Fuck.

Thanks LBSS, they're going to start me on a different med. The last one (rizatriptan) well, it definitely took away the migraine but holy F the side affects. I was useless the rest of the day. No bueno.

On another note this is the longest "episode" I've had. Going on 4 weeks daily. Normally they last about two weeks. I have cluster migraines behind my right eye fwiw. They differ from a normal migraine in that these are sharp, stabbing bursts of pain that come and go as fast as they appear. Usually if i can catch it IMMEDIATELY I can knock it back to a dull pain in my ass lol but lately they're impressively strong so we tried a prescription migraine med and it incapacitates me for hours lol dizzy, barely awake, feels like I ran a marathon, nausea, etc etc. Bleh. Just picked up the new prescription so... We shall see.

So I did what any same person would do after theyve taken double the recommended dosage of Excedrin migraine and Ibuprofen yesterday... I lifted 🙄😁🤷‍♂️ Probably helped because it lessened after I threw up post sled drives. I did gain some weight the past week so BW was 195.5lbs but I felt decently springy all things considered. Managed to try some SL running box jumps to try and get my form better. Took a clip of a few for reference later and filmed a 2 step approach on a 51" box DL. I REALLY should have filmed the first two one step attempts. The RL plant was decent but I avoided busting my face by about a millimeter on the LR plant 😂. I'll post the vids I did take in a few.


Annnnd that's basically my last week or so in review. Yay.

The SL stuff is super intriguing. Here I seem to be more a "power" jumper but when I jump in games it's more a "speed" jump. Now here it's probably more because I'm slowing down consciously and trying to out effort into correct movements and triple extension, etc. But it's the same when in a dunk session vs a game. I just can NOT transition speed during training off one leg. It HAS to be a mental block from WAY back. I cant think of any other reason? I definitely jump much higher off one in games. I'm hoping drilling the motions as much as I have my DL jumps will help. I've already seen an improvement in my LR DL jump so.im hoping this carries over as well. That all said for a "low effort" ( it wasn't that low lol) these are EASILY higher than I was a few months ago off one leg. This would have been ME SL early this year so thats positive.

Has anyone here tried to transition from a power type to a speed type SL jump? I was told I was a speed jumper in HS T&F and it comes out more in games obviously but I feel I'd be able to maximize it more if I could recreate it in training. My head tells my brain is subconsciously switching to a power style in training to lessen the braking stresses on my knee and shin? Makes sense given my extra weight since HS (195 vs 160ish). Hmmm.

crazy box jumps as usual. sl one looking smooth.

with single vs double, the simple process of "thinking" about the jump might cause too much interference with the speed of a single leg jump. for a double, you're on the ground longer, so it's probably not as much of a problem. but for single, those conscious mental signals slow it down a bit. in a game, you're mind is on something else (or blank and just reacting) and you just perform the movement relaxed & free.

so maybe don't worry about it as much in training. because in games/amp'd up sessions, you probably will be able to let loose more and get that extra performance bump. as long as you're getting those movements in, it'll get you ready for the epic jumps.

towards the end of my dunk lyfe i did. i rushed into it though. after a few months of L-SLRVJ'n, my thigh got wrecked and I couldn't jump. I was getting up pretty good too.

but it happened out of nowhere.

one day i just wasn't landing any DLRVJ dunks, so I said let me try an L-SLRVJ and i got way up. was crazy. then i started trying to shift completely into a single leg jumper, which felt much more normal for me.

these jumps happened when my left leg (jump leg) was really wrecked. sux. had tons of potential with it and was enjoying it more than dlrvj (because of the speed component).

Good points for sure. I think for now I'll try to double up my amount of SL jumps vs DL in training and focus on getting proper position and then adding as much speed as possible in the confined space I have. I definitely agree SL jumping is not only more "fun" but more applicable in half court sets for sure.

Also planning to ramp up some more strenuous depth jumps twice a week just to get some more tendon recruitment. At the end of July I'll program some heavy supra max quarters and hang cleans and see what happens. Usually those help me peak pretty well. Plan to hit them 2x a week for 2 weeks or so and see if I can get bouncy bouncy.

Still struggling to lose weight. SMH. I LOOK leaner and I'm heavier lol which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I'm sure it's not helping the SL journey lol

Hope you US guys had a nice 4th and all your fingers are intact!

BW was 192 today. Looked way leaner. Celebrated with ice cream after dinner 😅

Actually got a day off so I was able to train early vs super late and that was nice. Hamstrings were incredibly right from Saturdays lifting. Almost painful but not. Decent lift anyway. Managed to run by the court afterwards for literally 30 mins lol

Walked in post weights gym and changed shoes. Did some light shooting and decided I'd film some jumps to see where I am after no on court jumping in a damn minute. Phone didn't record. Blah. So I did the same handful of jumps again.

Conclusion: my timing sucks dick. And I've lost speed into the plant and some form (although these could be from the really tight hams). Felt as if I was shortening up my penultimate and plant steps significantly versus before. I'll have to check some old footage to be sure. I didn't get any SL footage the second go around but I'm DEFINITELY more explosive off one even with tight hams and no "motivation"

Gonna look at vid now and probably cut it down some. Will post later.

Ok, got busy so I just tossed the vid up. Excuse the time between jumps I was inside my own head about the hamstring. SVJ check: meh, ok I guess; RL: not bad; LR: first attempt was closer, horribly short plant step; off glass lob: timing sucked but felt ok; self alley: holy shit all junk, plus a bobble of the rock; height check: smh. Felt ZERO explosiveness. Just powered through it. Hamstring tightness evident in the shorter plant step (knee is bent), and the block step was shit resulting in me going forward rather than upward. Pros? The landing felt feathery. Meaning the body is reading to absorb more force (aka speed into the plant and a resulting higher jump I hope).

Edit: also seen to be collapsing torso wise in the plant. Fawk.

Sigh. Had to take a week off due to some crazy work scheduling/these stupid headaches/family duties. That said....my L knee pain came back somewhat. Dropped weights and spent a few days doing rehab circuits and it seems better now. So tonight it's back to the weights. I did check my FS and conventional deadlift on Saturday after a short warmup. 295 FS and 405 dead moved easily with no sleeves/wraps/belt. Sound sgood but my weight is still a fat ass 195lbs. Time to add some sprinting cardio to the end of workouts I REALLY wanna be back around 185.

Goal: lose 10lbs by Thanksgiving. Nice slow cut to maintain strength I hope.

My training consistency is shit currently. SMH. Work is killing me lol! That said.... Some weird stuff today. Maybe I'm just fully recovered but I was quite explosive in warmups. Also, more flexible???? Idk how that happened considering I don't stretch often outside the gym/warmups/cool down. Also BW was 191.2lbs so that's headed in the right direction! Just gotta watch the portion sizes!

Well, super stressful week for someone who isn't usually stressed. Lifted today. Was... surprisingly nice. I knew I looked leaner so I figured I'd be a bit bouncier than usual. Decided to back squat as a finisher. Stopped at a 385lb paused squat. No belt/sleeves/anything. I was shocked considering it's been what a month plus since I've squatted?! Went and weighed myself after and holy shit 186.5lbs. Exciting to say the least!
