Hi guys. I have a question, What drills etc and how often should I do them to get better at defense , I mean faster . Today with my friend we went to a team practice and that team is top3 teams in our country and then we played 1on1 there and at the defensive end I sucked. almost everyone I played against could get a wide open jumpshot any time they wanted.

Well, defense is about being quick and smart!  Both of those take effort but can be improved.

Drill 1: Lane Slides - Start on one side of the lane in a defensive stance, then as quickly as possible, slide to the other side and touch the line, then immediately back to the first line.  Go back and forth as fast as possible for 30 s.  Each trip across the land is 1, and try to beat your score every time.  Try to do 5 sets of these a couple times a week, that should get your legs conditioned to lateral movement and changing direction, by touching the line with your hand, you will learn to stay low which gives you a better center of gravity.

Drill 2: Agility Drill - This another mobility drill, use the lane again.  Start at the lower left corner of the lane on the baseline.  Sprint forward to freethrow line, slide right to other side of the lane, back pedal to the baseline, sprint forward to freethrow line, slide back to the left side, back pedal back to the start.  Do these for time, and try to get faster each time!

Being a smart defender takes more work.  A couple things to remember:

1. Stay low, keep your butt down and hands up.  If moving to the right keep right hand up left hand down.  Switch going the other way.
2. Focus on the defender's chest.  Can't fake with your chest.
3. Don't try to steal every ball.  Stay in front of your man, always better to stay between your man and the ball then miss a steal and let your man get a layup.
4. On a shot attempt, put your hand in front of the shooter's eyes.  Really hard to block a jump shot, but easy to disrupt a shooter if they can't see!

Off the ball defense becomes much more complicated and has lots of team aspects, but if you maintain a line of sight on the ball and stay between your man and the goal, that's a good start.

Good luck.

Ya I dont remember where but somewhere I read about focus on the chest , and that is a very good tip , it is very hard to do crossover then .
