Hmmm. 🤔 Super interesting points by Fast and Adarq... mostly because everyone whos ever hooped or dunked with me says it looks like I'm not even trying. I think thats the key tho. You HAVE to be relaxed and then just turn it on. I guess it comes naturally for some and others its engrained through training but the ability to turn ON INSTANTLY is, IMO, DIRECTLY wired to your CNS. Watch slow mo of sprinters or high jumpers and watch how quickly the muscle bodies contract and subsequently RELAX after output.

Damn and here i thought i was relaxed 😁

171025 Rest up
Today is wed.  Full rest as instructed.
Monday was weight. Tuesday was 25 min cardio.
I am still at 183lbs

Coach asked me to rest up and suggested me to do more cardio as weight control. Yet..  I am suppose to go test my "Jump" after resting.

So i rested today. No knee pain... No nothing.  Will go to low rim no.3 tomorrow and try to dunk. I have not done drible up for months... But i had been jumping alot.  Lets hope I can make a lob dunk.

A recap. The swimming event. I got 3rd place. Pushing my 53 sec per 50m to 41 sec.  Some rhythmic technique i got, trained 4 time and did my best.  Not knowing how to dive off from the block, I started my swim in water... Lol.  And the first place is some dad who looke like a life guard.

However the 1km run with my girl a day after swimming event; she did very poor. She lost to this girl she beaten before.  Becaz it is a family race, and I knew running with dad group is probably harder.  So i told my girl to run with mom.  End up the opponents ran with a fake mom (who happen to be a coach).  And my girl lost completely by over 30secs.  Opponent got 1st, we are not even in top 3.

I careless about the other girl cheated. I am just not happy that my girl is unable to preform her best and lost focus completely.  I don't care who the kid parent's runner is.  The kid still need to run in order to finish with a good time.  We lost, not only becaz she ran faster.   It is mainly because we ran poorly.   There is good days and bad days.  But i think, we will try this event One more time, this time i will resume running with my girl.

Ps. I read every single message posted here.  Thanks for the advice and suggestion and time spent here.  Like adarq said, less thinking... I will try my best to attempt dunking on rim 3.

Having quite a bit pressure in work... But i need to keep my fire up.

141026 Rim 3 still no rim 2 pcs of cake
I spent 1hr and 15 min at rim 3....
from stand still to 1 step to dribble up to self lob.

I COULD NOT land any dunk.
I tried to jump with out ball and i got WAY over the rim, with the whole wrist.
Clearly is my technique  that is stopping me.

i did not want to leave the court.. caz i was sooo dam close...
i was 15 min late. and i did not even go to shower.... after this session.
What ended me... is when 2 little kid came to the court... and because all 4 court have kids.. they decide to leave...
and i told the kid.. i am leaving u can have my court.

... so i left.

video in production.. will be ready tonight.

I am so angry... i could not land any dunk today...

coach is more focus on my jump with out ball...
but i was more focus in making 1 dunk...
Because it mean progress...

Coach keep telling me.
1.9 M world class high jumper weight below 170lbs, why am i weighting at 183lbs.

sounds like very good news to me, the "WAY over the rim" part.

jumping without the ball is just different .. so, surely "technique", but that's why I advocate learning the lob, it makes it much easier to jump near your max (or even at or above your max when everything magically clicks when you chase the ball). As for dribble ups, seems like a very different movement to me.

so, i am happy to see you slowly working on lobs.

that anger can be a good thing.. keep this up and a dunk will land soon.

Personally, I agree with your coach. You can try dunking over and over, but I like spending more time focusing on max effort jumps initially, until one can get a ~3 inches or so of wrist over the rim fairly consistently. Then it makes dunking alot easier. Sure, practice some dunks during that time too, but to me, consistently getting ~3+ inches over the rim on max effort jumps is the first step.

I think your definition of progress is skewed.. which is understandable, you want to land this damn dunk already! But, from what i've seen in this post, before the video is uploaded, it sounds like you're making progress for sure. And, i've seen progress in your recent videos, and in your lobs etc.

If 3 months down the road you are getting 4-5" of wrist over the rim on a max jump, and still not landing any dunks, it will be admittedly funny but also sad, yet still motivating & incredible. Though, once you get to that height over the rim, the dunks will land easy, several per session, with some that are absolutely crushed.

Again I mostly agree with him here.. You look lean like LBSS said, and you are jumping good right now.. Does one have to be incredibly lean? Definitely not.. Does dropping some fat help? 99.9% of the time, yes. Weight loss isn't "magical", sometimes it doesn't linearly match with vert gains, because we lose muscle too. So maintaining muscle (via lifting and proper diet) is very important. The other thing though, is weight loss can cause ones body to go haywire a bit, so while someone might think "man my jumping sucks as I get lighter" , that's usually just everything being haywire and their body not stabilizing at that weight. That doesn't seem to be happening to you right now, so that's a good thing. But it's also something to keep in mind ..  If someone loses fat and maintains muscle, but their vert doesn't go up, it seems more related to their nervous systems being temporarily jacked up.. but that stuff stabilizes eventually, and jumping improves. It can also be a "symptom" of the work involved, losing fat & weight can simply mean a higher volume of "cardio" or things like that.. If weight loss comes from "more jumping (or some basketball)", like it does with alot of these elite obsessed dunkers, then that's the "holy grail" of fat loss for jumping :D

Anyway, from what I see so far, your coach seems to have you on the right track ... Every coach can chime in and say, you should do X Y Z differently, but he seems to have you on a solid formula: jumping hard & max without the ball, jumping alot, lifting, leaning up a bit etc. He obviously needs to let you get in some good jumps with the ball, but I mean, I usually jumped max without the ball until I felt like I hit my max jumps, then i'd start using the ball & try dunking .. so i'd sacrifice some vert at the end when dunking, to focus more on getting as high as possible without the ball. I feel like that works great, because it gives you more "pure" jump quality in a session.

peace!

Your run ups are too frantic, and lack rhythm. Hence you don't get the best leverage to propel yourself higher with the strength that you have to work with. IE you're not getting the most bang for your buck!

I agree.. a  month without jumping with the ball and this is what happen... i guessI lack the skill.. or memory with the ball..
doing more of it should help.  look at those mini step right after the ball left my hand  :uhhhfacepalm:

So i feel very energetic after this session and cant wait to go jump...
but tomorrow is cardio... so i need to wait a day...

171031 The  next morning
I sleep at 11pm but woke up from 2 to 3am..... before i can go back to sleep
The next morning, i am unable to wake up at 630 and did not do my pre breakfast run.
Guess i will have to run at lunch...
Muscle pain appear 24 hrs later... Calf and quad and glute.  May be this is a good thing, at least i dont need to wait for 48 hrs...

or may be i just have  a weak mind.  Wake up and go run... not wake up and go back to sleep.

Have you tried the right-left plant jump? Like the way MJ would dunk off 2 foot a lot of times. You might get better leverage that way, since you are strong on your left leg because you are right handed.

it'd be interesting to know, but considering he almost crushed that dunk at 2:00, not sure why he'd want to even try changing his plant?

I can't recall many people/dunkers online jumping higher or better after changing their plant. Most of them really struggle with it. Pretty much everyone on here has struggled with it, myself included. Even switching the hand barely works for people, ie an LR plant with right hand dunks, switching to LR plant with left hand dunks.

So just saying, considering where he's at right now, experimenting with a different plant seems like a "bad bet". It would be interesting to know for sure, and something that he could mess with more after he lands this dunk he's been chasing.

TLDR, just needs to keep focusing on one thing and that's it, no forks in the road, just crushing that dunk in the most normal way possible.

my 2cents.

peace!

100% agree!
There is no need to change plant or anything. Whatever feels the best naturally is the way you should jump.

If you HAVE to change something, change the dunking hand, seemed easier to me and helped sooo much. Left hand is so much better/natural for LR plant. T0ddday took this advice and found it very helpful too. But take it with a grain of salt, i am a little bit ambidextrous so it came rather easy to me to dunk left-handed.
Target training paces (min/km), calculated from 5K PR 22:49 :
Easy run : 5:48
Tempo run : 4:50
VO2-max run :4:21
Speed form run : 4:02

---

it's the biggest trick in the run game.. go slow to go fast. it doesn't make sense until it smacks you in the face and you're like ....... wtf?

For discussion: easier to change plants or change hands?
