ya maybe. also i'd recommend racing at LEAST 2x/month, even if you are not feeling at your best/peak etc. It's great to keep showing up on race day, executing strategies, getting better at simply showing up to it, and then you can also have solid though unexpected performances.

races can be great workouts. I do it alot.. :D It can be a really nice fast-tempo session.

I like 2 hard days per week:
- usually tuesday
- sat or sun <- these are either races, or if no race, just hard sessions (usually sat if not a race).

a great way to prepare for hitting a 5k time IMHO, is to work on your 1.5-2 mile run. ie, run it at the pace (or faster) that you want to hit in the 5k. Get more comfortable hitting that pace for a subset of the distance. Even though it's not the full 5k, gets your body used to experiencing that pace, and feels easier on race day with the adrenaline etc. Also interval workouts help since they are somewhat similar, just usually less continuous distance, but more reps, ie 8-12 x 400 or 6 x 800 etc. You can also combine the two once you get better, ie moderately hard mile + rest + some finishing intervals etc. Stuff like that. More of the "art" of it. You'll find what works for you.

Thursday July 5 2018
start 11:02 PM

5.1 mile stroll in 49 minutes

legs were not wrecked but kinda sore from 5k so i didnt plan for anything intense.  I had more energy and felt more pep in my step when i got going.  as per strava this was as  fast or maybe a little faster than my usual "easy strolls" I would have anticipated it slower before i got started due to soreness.

Sat July 7 2018
5:54 PM start
legs still a lil sore plan was to get something in hard/uncomfortable today

1 mile warmup
1.21 miles for time in 8 min
2 mile cool down

plan was 3 miles for time but when i glanced down at 1.21 miles somehow my time got stopped so i just stopped....  not as hard as i wanted i wanted to be uncomfortable/push it for 3 miles but better than nothing. I feel like if i had gone 3 i probbly coulda reached 22:30 for 3 or maybe faster.  first mile was 6:36 I'm not a strong runner so next 2 miles woulda slowed but I dont think slower than 7:30. i gotta get used to legs burning/acidic and pushing it.  I've always enjoyed running just to relax but not running to push it.  Races force me to run this way which is why I want to race regularly to improve.  When no races scheduled will do 2-3 hard runs per week.

Immediate plan tho is long run tomorrow easy run monday.... semi hard run tues... maybe 1 mile for time and try to beat 6:30. Then easy the rest of the week til race space force on sat.

i've definitely bailed on running tests like that as well. it's hard without competitors or at least a partner. over the last couple months i've run 1-2 times per week with a guy who is much faster than me (16:xx 5k) and it just forces me to push through in a way that's harder when i'm alone. the "excuses" voice in my head is easier to listen to when there's no "don't let yourself down in front of this dude" voice to counter it.

a few years ago i met up with t0ddday, who used to post on here and ran 10.6 in college. we did a 200 repeat workout that nearly killed me (<30s per rep for i think 8 reps) and took me days to recover from. i was unable to finish the last rep but would not have been able to do more than one without him to chase.

anyway i'm rambling but just saying i identify with the mental struggle of finding excuses ("my watch just, like, stopped working or something" is one i've used) not to push when i mean to push. racing is a great way to do that, i wish i could do it more.
Muscles are nonsensical they have nothing to do with this bullshit.

yea the struggle is real for me mentally when it comes to running hard ive always hated it! when we would have hard group runs scheduled as a group with my boxing team I would always dread it the night before. I'd only look forward to sparring days  ;D ;D

i was trying to run with my phone too need to get a watch for when i try to run hard like that!

Sunday July 8 2018

long slow run
10 mile mental health stroll run in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

as far as i know this is the furthest i ever ran on a run that wasnt on the treadmill.  IF i ran further(pretty sure i havent) it was likely long ago and i didnt do it many times. a few years back i ran 9 miles a few times with a former boxing coach i had but pretty sure none longer than 9.
I had the idea over past few months to get a 10 mile run in but i wimped out due to the heat, lack of food(due to eating  and fluid disorder on trying to make weight for boxing) and other mental issues i guess maybe.  glad to  have finally followed through with it. even if i wasnt running fast.  funny to think that some people can almost run a marathon in what i just jogged 10 miles in though

ya ~6 minutes per mile faster than you lol. but you were jogging, they are running. so, once you get in better shape and actually run 10 miles hard, say at like 7:00 min/mi eventually, they'll only be 2+ minutes per mile faster... closing the gap. think about that :D :ninja: :ibrunning:

good to know mijo.  back in my day the crowd i trained with used to shame ppl who said no mas so im ashamed to admit when i wimp out lmao. but it helps to know a runner thats surpassed the goal i want(sub 20 5k) and runs much better than me  still wimps out.
but you are waay overly ambitious than i am.  my sauna suit would have me wimping out all the time and you planned on running 3 hours in those conditions  :o :o :o

mon july 9 2018

REST

I spent the weekend at my parents house and I am currently still here and i have to work tomorrow afternoon/night.  My parents live 2 hours from where I work and I have weird sleep patterns at times I already know by how late/early it is(have not slept yet) I wont wake up in time to run before heading to work.  Had planned on a slow 5 or 6 mile run but will just rest completely.  tues i plan on starting to log my food as well as start training twice per day most days.(run post shift around 1 am) then again late morning early afternoon before my next shift begins.

nice. food journal helps alot IMHO.

btw, 2AM run is dope but, be careful mijo!!! my only advice, don't run with headphones (*especially* if they are visible) at that hour. you know how it goes. :/

i really loved running at those times as well.. absolutely love the silence of it. really miss it. but can't go back to it.

Tues July 10 2018
coffee 2 bananas
start at 1:57 AM run 5.09 miles in 48 min
2 bananas 3 eggs

planned on waking up and jogging to track timing in 1 mile then jogging home before work but I had to go to work earlier than usual and i accidentally slept in until time to get ready for work
2 bananas 3 eggs
coffee

I went overboard and messed up and lost track of the snacks I had at work will do better at logging rest of food in the future. Trying to step game up and primarily eat eggs and bananas.

UPDATE
I received e-mail that location of space force 5k has been moved due to circumstances beyond their control.  The space force 5k was supposed to take place at the space center but they moved it to about 1 mile away from the space center.  This is kind of disappointing because I have never been to the space center and was looking forward to running there.  Still looking forward to running in a 5k this sat though.
