Title: Hip Belt Squats
Post by: mj on May 06, 2011, 08:16:15 am
Anyone used hip belt squats before? Real squats rule of course but I'm always looking for functional (not leg press) ways to overload the legs.

I have long mofo legs which make back squats pc dominant no matter how high the bar is. My quads are pretty weak compared to my hams and glutes. Its particularly annoying cause my VMOs need more work to minimise my tendonitis issues.

I front squat and BSS regularly but these don't allow the same balls out linear progression as a big back squat due to the difficulty of stabilising the weight. Wondering if BSS and front squat as primaries with hip belt squats as a secondary might be a good approach?

Any thoughts? I lift at home and building a couple of platforms ain't a thing.... I'm handy like bob the builder mang  8)

i do not understand why leg press is not "functional." all this is gpp, leg press allows you to overload the legs, overloading leads to muscle and strength growth. it's science. if you're doing other stuff as well, and it sounds like you are with the bss and front squats, leg press should be a fine part of a gpp strength-building routine. especially if you have long legs.

haha even if I was being a bit closed minded about leg press it don't matter man. I ain't got one at home so its a redundant statement on my part anyway.

Scratch the comment about leg press  :uhhhfacepalm:

The rest of the question stands......

haha sorry, i'm just being anal. i've never done hip belt squats but i'm pretty sure ross enamait uses them and he knows his shit. would the problem just be the same as the exercises you're already doing though, i.e. that you'll eventually be limited in the amount of weight you can add/stabilize? i'd be willing to bet that you can front squat a lot more than you can hip belt squat, just because of how much you can load up.

I could imagine it being so much smoother.

A new lift which resembles hip belt squats which could blow-up gains in speed?, vert?, strength? etc.

Well I say 'new'. It's probably been around since the 1500's.

I tried hip blet squats when I had a sore back late last year. I bought the Iron Mind belt and basicalyl gave up after 1 session because no matter how I position the belt I always felt the chain was ripping into my hips at the bottom. They were just so freaking uncomfortable it wasn't worth it. The next day I had all sorts of nasty ass bruises.

As for leg press the biggest issue I have is that there is a lot less hip extension involved compared to squats and deadlifts. Good for quad development though.

Any idea on how to use the leg press for vastus medialis development specifically?

I'm switching back to the track gym and there I only have barbells and 15kg+ plates (so the lowest barbell weight available, other than an empty 20 kg barbell, is 50 kg).

I have bars, squat supports, a leg press and that's all for the legs.

I like the single leg version of the leg press best. Also I wouldn't worry too much about just trying to develop the VMO either. Why would you want to isolate that muscle so much anyway?

It's what sets many athletes apart, having the mental toughness to go past that & getting use to it. Lower the weight, build-up the tolerance levels.

Zercher squats (which I don't do anymore) were by far my most painful exercise I performed, having a bare bar in the crooks of your arms, but you get use to it after about a month.

Because it's always dead and underdeveloped for me. It goes as far as making my knee unstable due to overdeveloped vastus lateralis and underdeveloped vastus medialis.

Interesting experience thanks man. I went out and bought a hip squat belt. Couldn't help myself  ;D

I used it tonight for the first time. I expected some discomfort like that but nah... all good on my body. I'm red and chaffed around the hips but not painful or bruised. Got my legs good too. VMO has been raped in the good way (better than front squatting for me)

I used it with a 7ft oly bar, which wasn't nearly as cumbersome as it looked. I didn't mind it. Still going to get an ez curl bar to use though (I found a use for a curl bar  :ninja:).

What an ego check man. Went for 3 x 6 at 100kg. Got like 4 decent reps in the whole lot. The rest I either cheated depth or assisted with arms on the power rack cause it was farkin heavy. I low bar just shy of 2 x bw so yeah  :'(

I like this contraption. But I have a shitty build for squatting (good puller though). I can see the hips getting mad chaffed at like 400 lbs but based on the retarded lifts at 220 lbs I've got a while before worrying about it.
