Title: Increasing movement speed (vertical jump movement)
Post by: scoobychau on July 25, 2014, 03:39:58 am
How would I improve the over all Jump Movement?

I had reviewed many elite dunker... on youtube.
and concluded that.. they are jump with SUPER fast lighting speed.

beside short ground contact time,  their run up approach, Arm Swing, the descending/loading phase and lift off phase is all in lighting fast speed.

Then I look at myself. No matter how much i try to speed myself up..especially my arm swing...

I still find myself.. seems to be in Slow motion comparing to those who jump high.

I did not have the time to do video editing... but clearly if i put their jumping video vs mine side by side.
it is like they are throwing are FAST punch, where i am throwing are  punch with dumbbell .....

I had seen people practice the 2 steps approach by leaning forward before dropping quickly land into a  ready to jump 2 leg stance...

But.. how about arm swing? I am wondering if i should look at Boxing forum.. to see how they manage to increase punching speed... may be it is related?

That's why you do the 2-leg bounds for LENGTH and SPEED.

The length ones subject you with greater forces, while the speed ones subject you with greater speeds - so you can get, over time, better at higher speed plants.

Combine that with practicing jumping and you'll be the best version YOU can be.

Some people jump with a very high speed because they structure allows them to do that.

Yes, you would, but there's a reason why you don't swing it faster - your body needs to have the same "groove" throughout.

You can't just swing faster and have the legs push at the same slow speed. You also can't push very fast and swing slowly.

So there's a reason your body chooses to have the armswing that you currently have.

Yeah it's just not realistic to think that modifying your arm swing speed is an easy fix. Improving your approach is something that needs to be built up from the ground up over time with drills, exercises like the repeated 2-leg bounds that Raptor prescribes and lots of low-intensity practice run-ups.
