Title: One of my athletes - tiring
Post by: Flander on February 18, 2011, 05:14:23 pm
Ok. So one of my young athletes has come back from a 1½ month break due to back trouble.

Before this his bench was 4x10 @ 72½. Some loss in strength was anticipated, but this is the trouble.

His bench has gone to 10 @ 60 which is acceptable and I would expect him to bounce back up fast, but if I ask him to do multiple sets he tires in an extreme degree.

Example. I have him do sets of 10. 1st set: 10x60, 2min break, 2nd: 9x60, 2min break, 3rd: 7x10, 2min break 4th: 6x57½, 2min break, 5th: 5x52½, and down it goes.

He simply tires extremely fast and dont seem to recover. Im thinking that maybe his metabolic fitness is to low, given the break from training. Im thinking to test this with having him do multiple sets of bench with a very long break to see if he then recovers.

I was just wondering if someone could think of something else. I have thought of diet, but he eats well.

I have the same problem. I do for example my first set of benches with 55 kg and do 10 reps. Then my 2nd set is around 5 reps after a 45s break.

After a lay off, the higher the rep range youre testing the bigger the drop off in many athletes.  Lower rep sets and max strength will be closer to the previous levels in alot of athletes but strength endurance tends to drop off the quickest.  Once he gets back into it his strength endurance should go back up fairly quickly as well, quick to leave is usually quick to come back and slow to leave is usually slow to come back as well.

Makes good sense. Thank you for your input. I have a plan.

I was just wondering if someone could think of something else. I have thought of diet, but he eats well.

I would say it's medical. Maybe candida or thyroid problems which can cause extreme fatigue.

I have thought of diet, but he eats well.

Regardless, millions of people have great, healthy diets, they still get sick.

Take candida for example. Overdose on fresh fruit (sugar), you will get candida. Cruciferous vegetables can cause thyroid troubles.
