Title: Ball handling
Post by: Girljordan on March 03, 2011, 03:15:14 pm
I have a question about dribbling. In an in game situation to keep a person with quick hands from stilling the ball when driving, is it best to dribble low and hard. Should you always dribble hard. I know you'll probably say yes to my question, but any really good ball handler know the key to protecting the ball when driving past a defender.

My best suggestion to keeping them from stealing the ball when you drive is to make a quick first step and then created space with your shoulder. Watch video of allen iverson hes a great example of a smaller playing who creates space with his shoulders. But I dont always dribble hard. Sometimes its good to dribble slowly to sorta "lure your defender to sleep" and then hit them with 1 quick hard move

Get strong with the inside arm (The one you are not dribling with), use it to keep the defender away and protect the ball.

I think Alex Maroko has a product out about ball handling. I'd check that out.

I know you have beef with Maroko and this is probably some sarcastic joke, but I highly recommend that program.
It really does help A LOT with your ball handling

He can't be the king of quickness for no objective reason can't he?

2nd that program itself is good, and he actually wrote it back in the db hammer days when he wasnt some little kid salesmen

in terms of content Flying in Four and effective ball handling are pretty solid, but the marketing is a different story. but dont think he cares, getting his programs out there and making a ton of money.

yeah it really has helped with my feel for the ball, and since it is so structure, I have worked on ball handling even on those days where I dont feel like it.

@JC: I know you think that TAQ is bs, but what you dont realize is that for misinformed athletes who are taught that you are born with quickness, maroko helped a lot of people.

His marketing is wack for really knowledgable trainees like those on this site, but for most basketball players and other high school athletes, maroko is able to reach them with all his marketing. You dont realize how WACK most people train. Most of my teammates still think that jumpsoles will help their vertical.

I didn't need help with ball handling but with protecting the ball. I know how to teach myself ball handling moves.

For ball protection, its more about reading the defense and reacting to it. Attack the lead foot. Get low.

Stay low when you have the ball and dribble hard.
