Title: Gain stamina for basketball
Post by: russgenious on October 19, 2011, 04:59:33 pm
For the past few weeks I've been doing adarqi's intro block and its been going fine. But basketball tryouts are in a month and my main focus will be to improve my bball skills since I'm weak at several of the fundamentals (shooting, dribbling etc...). Another weakness is that I lack stamina, and I feel that my weightlifting strength (the little that I have) doesn't help translate on the court.

Currently I'm around 6"2 and only 165 lbs so I'm skinny but my main concern isn't bulking up at this point but to get into the best basketball shape possible. Suggestions for the cardio/weights that I should be doing? I can grab rim from a standstill, but my running vertical isn't much higher and my legs feel dead when playing bball... I have a squat 5 rep max of around 190.

You get in basketball shape and condition, along with gaining basketball skills by playing basketball against good competition.  Make that your priority, you can supplement with drills and shooting, etc., but playing intense ball with good comp should be the majority of your bball conditioning.

Push your strength up in the weight room on the main lifts, you can reduce the assistance work as you play more ball but you should still be able to squat/bench/press/pull up a couple of times per week and improve.

Sounds like solid advice. What if there's no one at the Y though? Would suicides and the like be beneficial? I just hate getting tired so quickly...
