Title: Weight lifting shoes
Post by: hennas87 on June 17, 2011, 08:40:28 am
What do you guys think of weight lifting shoes?

my squatting has come along quite well in the last 5 months or so and I've started using about 180 kg (roughly 400 lbs I think) in most of my workouts and I'm hoping to increase that soon. Whenever I pick the weight up and step back I can feel my shoes go squish in the heels (just lifting in basketball shoes atm). Surely that's a sign that my shoes aren't up to the task.

It's always nice to have gear that's designed for a certain task but weightlifting shoes are a bit pricey for me although if it's really important I could deal with the one off expense.

Are there any alternatives you could recommend that don't break the bank as much or should I just go for the real deal?

I've read that you should use shoes that have flat soles when lifting although the weightlifting shoes I've seen have a raised heel...

I'm for weightlifting shoes although I never wore any... they just look like they're good for lifting. I think Tychver and Kingfish have some.

The cheapest ones i could find were the VS Athletics ones http://www.vsathletics.com/product.php?xProd=1301

I've heard that squatting in dress shoes is very similar because of the raised heel, and I've even tried full squatting in my dress shoes, it feels nice.  I would like to hear someone else's take on this, but lifting in dress shoes feel really nice though, even if people stare at me at the gym.  The dress shoes are only temporary until I acutally get a pair of o-lifting shoes next month.

haha yeah, I never thought of wearing dress shoes. I guess they would be quite similar. I know that mine are pretty hard although I doubt I'll take them to the gym with me  :P I can imagine the looks I would get.

I think what I really want to know is what is the benefit of having the hard sole and heel?

A hard heel/sole will keep the foot from moving around, and force from dissipating, transferring more of your power straight down into the ground.   The vs weightlifting shoes are great for athletes/recreational lifters.

also, a flat soled shoe like a converse chuck taylor is also a good squatting shoe, but you need to have a lot of flexibility to be able to squat very deep if you choose that option.  It will feel almost like youre standing in a slight dorsi flexion.

sweet  :) it all sounds good.

I think I'll stick to getting some actual weightlifting shoes, I would get the VS ones but I'd have to get them imported and I don't really want to do that.

when I get paid I'll get some adidas ones, just cos of the name really although everything I've owned made by adidas has been good so I reckon it'll be cool.

Thanks for your input, guys.

Peace

i've had the adidas ironworks2 for years.. still solid and does it job. can't go wrong with the romaleos either. just a little pricey but they feel very well made. i wear them every workout.. but only when lifting. i take them off as soon as im done.

dude squatting in weightlifting shoes is the best i had the same problem as you so i brought some weightlifting shoes for cheap at 80 buck australia, you can really feel the difference in the transfer of energy from the ground up and its so much easier to squat deep. i'm 6'5 i use to have a lil bit of a problem squatting deep with normal shoes coz of balance but with weightlifting shoes its easier to balance and keep the weight on the heel/forefoot

I have read good things about the ironworks shoes although they've proven to be rather difficult to get hold of (I was reading in forums that they were discontinued and these were posts from 2009).

I've ordered some of these instead http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/adidas_power_perfect-ii-weightlifting-shoe.html

I'm looking forward to trying them out when they arrive, hopefully will improve my lifting  ;D

If you wanted any of the shoes they do here they might ship to Romania, it's an option on when you're saying your address and they say they ship internationally.

took adidas long enough to break into the mid-price market. the heel is pretty low-profile (0.6") and seems to be rubber...give me that wood. pause.

I'm still going with the VS athletics, just cuz they're still cheaper, and I've seen reviews, b/c the shoe isn't a new product.

The VS athletics can feel really goofy and weird. They have a 1-1/2" heel, no matter what size you are. There is no in between with the VS athletics

What size do you wear?  Have you tried other lifting shoes?

^^^ I'm a 10.
My recommendation to you is just get a pair of chucks, save your money then go and get a more well thought out shoe. The VS athletic shoe is durable but just not as well thought out as others.

My VS Athletics just arrived today. The heel is exactly 1 1/4" or 10/8" while the midsole thickness is 3/8".

10/8 - 3/8 = 7/8.

The effective height of the heel is 7/8". Higher by an eighth of an inch than all the others (I think) except Risots.  My Ristos have an effective height around the same, even though Ristos raise the heel as the shoe size increases to keep the foot angle constant. As far as I know, every WL shoe except Ristos have the same effective heel height for each foot size which means the angle at which it puts each foot is slightly different. Shorter feet will be at a steeper angle than longer feet.

I don't think this has ever been a problem for anyone in the history of WL shoes ever. 3/4" or so effective heel height has worked for people with size 6 shoes and those with size 12. As long as the shoe gets your heel higher than the ball of your foot, it will allow you to get your knees forward in the bottom of the squat while keeping your torso more vertical.

It is probably just me then. I have had my VS athletics for about 2 weeks. I haven't become acclimated to it. I used to squat in chucks.

VS athletics shoes are very good training shoes. The end.

some of this shit is making me sick, people squatting less than 300lbs obsessed with 1/1000 of an inch heel height and bashing a shoe.  Get some weightlifting shoes, squat and get strong.

totally, I wouldn't worry so much about the height of the heel. I got my adidas power perfect IIs purely because it was the easiest option for me. I'm very happy with them and they make squats/deadlifts/jump snatches etc... feel a lot easier and better.
I hope to hit 2.5bw in the next few months (82kg/180 lbs bw)

For powerlifting, a lower heel is better because you typically aren't needing to dive under the bar as low as you would if your are Olympic lifting. This is the reason the Rogue RIP and now the Adidas PTs have a lower heel. It looks like tons of people are liking the Adidas shoes for powerlifting - http://buyweightliftingshoes.com/adidas-powerlift-trainers/
